This collection presents every song on the previously released VAULT: GREATEST HITS 1980-1995, along with an entire second disc of additional album tracks, including the AC/DC-like "High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night)" and HYSTERIA's anthemic ode to "Women." Throughout the decades, the group endured its share of upheavals and tragedies--drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a 1985 accident and guitarist Steve Clark died in 1991--but they continued recording into the 21st century (see the 2002 track "Now"), revealing a determination that most of their peers lacked. For fans of '80s hard rock, this 35-track compilation is essential.

The Texan band distinguished itself by offering up a potent mid-tempo version of the typically fast-paced thrash metal style, resulting in a dense, crushing sound that served as a solid foundation for Phil Anselmo's dynamic growl-to-a-falsetto-in-seconds-flat voice. Although this collection only features five tracks from the early-'90s one-two punch of COWBOYS FROM HELL and VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER, it serves as a good introduction to the band's overall output. Pantera's career from the mid-'90s onward is represented by fierce tracks such as "I'm Broken," "Becoming," "5 Minutes Alone," and "I'll Cast a Shadow," as well as covers of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" and Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever."

The desperation of "You" still sounds effective and the Led Zeppelin-esque "Arrow" retains its frantic energy, while later songs like HAPPY PILLS' "10,000" Horses" and the ballad "Sometimes" display the Seattle band's artistic growth and its search for fresher sonic pastures.

Black Sabbath's 1975 greatest-hits album, WE SOLD OUR SOULS FOR ROCK & ROLL, may very well be the best single-volume compilation ever released that focuses on a band in its prime . It would seem nearly impossible to top, but Rhino's GREATEST HITS 1970-78 may have done just that. The uninspired title aside, GREATEST HITS is an essential document if for no other reason than, unlike SOLD OUR SOULS, it encompasses the band's entire run with the Ozzman at the helm, featuring songs from 1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and '78's NEVER SAY DIE. While "Dirty Women," Rock 'n' Roll Doctor," and "Never Say Die" can't compete with earlier Sabbath classics (including axed S.O.S. cuts "Fairies Wear Boots" and "Tomorrow's Dream") they're solid tracks that help to create a complete picture of the band up to Ozzy's departure in 1979. In addition to the aforementioned songs, GREATEST HITS also adds VOL. 4's blistering "Supernaut," an undisputed metal masterpiece. While SOLD OUR SOULS will always be the heavyweight champ of hits collections, GREATEST HITS 1970-78 is a can't-miss set for fans of Ozzy-era Sabbath.

Released nearly three decades after Ozzy Osbourne departed Black Sabbath, 2005's PRINCE OF DARKNESS represents the first attempt at encompassing Osbourne's solo career in a box-set format. In the thoroughly entertaining liner notes, Osbourne admits that he was skeptical about taking this record company-prodded step, agreeing to the project only when allowed to fulfill a longtime musical goal--to record an album's worth of cover tunes. The first two discs of this collection are divided between studio cuts, live recordings, and numerous demos of many bright spots in the Osbourne canon, including "Mr. Crowley," "Goodbye to Romance," and, of course, "Crazy Train." The third disc is a compilation of the Ozzman's non-album sessions, ranging from Sabbath standards with Therapy? ("Iron Man") and Primus ("N.I.B.") to a surprisingly low-key Motorhead collaboration ("I Ain't No Nice Guy"), a head-scratching duet with Miss Piggy ("Born to Be Wild"), and a previously unreleased romp through the disco smash "Stayin' Alive," with Dweezil Zappa. The highlight of the set, however, may be the newly recorded fourth disc. Here Ozzy pays homage to his heroes--including John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix--and contemporaries such as David Bowie and King Crimson. (Osbourne's unexpected take on Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" is particularly fierce.) For Ozzy fans, the 52-track PRINCE OF DARKNESS is a must-have collection.

Detroit soul in the '60s, London punk in the late '70s, Prince's Minneapolis school of funk-rock in the '80s, Seattle grunge in the early '90s -- all of those local scenes ended up becoming influential in more than one country. But some local scenes remain a local secret, and that has pretty much been the case with the doom metal/stoner rock scene of Washington, D.C., and its Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Some well-known doom and stoner bands have come out of that area -- Spirit Caravan, for example -- but even so, the scene hasn't received a great deal of national or international acclaim. Assembled by Crucial Blast Records in 2004, Doom Capital: The Maryland/DC Heavy Rock Underground sheds some light on the scene and does so with interesting, if slightly uneven, results. Exactly when D.C.'s doom/stoner scene got started is open to debate; this compilation's informative liner notes assert that it began in the early '70s with a Black Sabbath-influenced outfit called Pentagram. Doom Capital, however, doesn't contain anything from the '70s; most of the bands on this CD were formed in the '90s or early 2000s -- and that is true of Countershaft and Black Manta as well as Carrion, Earthride, Life Beyond, King Valley, and Los Tres Pesados. All of the bands on Doom Capital have some type of Sabbath influence, which is almost obligatory in the doom/stoner/sludge field; other influences on these D.C.-area headbangers can range from Blue Cheer to Queens of the Stone Age. Not everything on Doom Capital is fantastic, but most of the material is at least decent -- and when this 65-minute disc has finished playing, one ends up with a generally favorable impression of the doom/stoner scene in and around the U.S. capital. ~ Alex Henderson

Though it may not seem like much time, the five short years during which they recorded for A&M Records marked the most consistent period of Y&T's unfortunate career. And though they would sign a new contract with Geffen thereafter, their subsequent, glam-drenched efforts would prove even less inspired. So while hardly all encompassing, Best of '81 to '85 will satisfy the curious fan better than any other package, save perhaps for their excellent live album, Open Fire. The band's drab studio technique notwithstanding, tracks like "Open Fire," "Hurricane," "Mean Streak," and "I Believe in You" make a strong, cohesive statement about the group's songwriting, if not their performance. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Their biggest failing was that they came along a little bit too early to take advantage of the boom years of the '80s, when metal albums were flying out the stores and topping the charts. Too bad, because they had a good formula, part Van Halen and part AC/DC, who had swagger and hooks. Occasionally, they sounded a little generic, but in a good sense -- they played by metal's formulas and delivered satisfyingly. Hip-O's Ultimate Collection proves this by rounding up 17 tracks (including two live cuts) that hit nearly all the fan favorites and metal anthems, plus their lone hit, 1985's "Summertime Girls." It's the definitive word on a good band that would have been bigger if they had better timing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Big City Nights" (03/23/1998) Rock & Pop Scorpions, Universal Special ProductsLike many budget-line compilations, Rebound's Big City Nights is a haphazard blend of hits and album tracks, but this one has something different. It has a block of four live cuts in the middle that screeches the momentum to halt, especially since the two biggest hits, "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and "Wind of Change," are present only here. The casual fans who are this compilation's target audience will be none too thrilled by this development, but them's the breaks with budget-line discs -- you win some, you lose some. Here, you come to a draw, because there are some good moments amidst the rest of the disc and some audiences may have no problem with the live cuts. It's not particularly satisfying, but it's not a ripoff, either. So, if you buy this, you may not be completely satiated, but you'll come out even-steven -- sort of like Jerry Seinfeld, actually. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
