Enhancements include behind-the-scenes video footage, a screensaver, and weblinks. Linkin Park: Mike Shinoda (vocals, emcee, samples); Chester Bennington (vocals); Brad Delson (guitar, background vocals); Phoenix (bass, background vocals); Rob Bourdon (drums, background vocals); Joseph Hahn (turntables, samples, background vocals). Additional personnel: Joel Derouin, Charlie Bisharat, Alyssa Park, Sara Parkins, Michelle Richards, Mark Robertson (violin); Evan Wilson, Bob Becker (viola); Larry Corbett, Dan Smith (cello); David Zasloff (Shakuhachi flute). Recorded at NRG Studios, North Hollywood, California. "Session" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Mike Shinoda (vocals, sampler); Chester Bennington (vocals); Brad Delson (guitar, background vocals); Joel Derouin, Mark Robertson , Sara Parkins, Michele Richards, Charlie Bisharat (violin); Evan Wilson, Bob Becker (viola); David Zasloff (shakuhachi); Rob Bourdon (drums, background vocals); Joseph Hahn (sampler, background vocals). Audio Mixer: Andy Wallace. Recording information: Mike's House; MRG Studios, North Hollywood, CA. In one of the most highly anticipated follow-ups of recent years, Linkin Park maintains its position at the top of the nu-metal heap with METEORA. The band labored carefully over their craft; for instance, the writing process of leadoff single "Somewhere I Belong" spawned 30 finished choruses before vocalists Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington arrived at the version found on the album. The combination of Shinoda's raps and Bennington's sing/scream vocals makes for an altogether complementary approach, best evidenced in "Faint" and "Easier To Run." The pressure felt by Linkin Park to meet a high standard with their sophomore release even finds it's way into the lyrics of "Nobody's Listening," where self-doubt and fear are almost all-consuming. Producer Don Gilmore (Apex Theory, Blind Tribe) mans the boards with a decisive lean towards acoustic drums. That is not to say by any means that Linkin Park's inventive use of samples and turntables is any less present or crucial to the group's now-signature sound.

"Wonder What's Next" (10/08/2002) Heavy Metal Chevelle, Epic (USA)This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Chevelle: Pete (vocals, guitar); Joe (bass, background vocals); Sam (drums). Recorded at Warehouse Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Audio Mixer: Andy Wallace. Recording information: Warehouse, Vancouver, B. C. Photographers: Harold Edgerton; Chapman Baehler. With emotionally charged lyrics and heavy, crunching guitars, Chevelle sounds ready to take the hard rock world by storm. Although this album will fit nicely alongside fellow heavyweights Godsmack and Staind, Chevelle does not concentrate on penning deliberately gloomy compositions. The songs on this debut CD are all well crafted and stand on their own as testament to a band that knows what it wants to accomplish. A lush production brings out the thick sound in every instrument, as well as capturing the haunting, melodic vocals. The soaring vocals seem to be floating above a quagmire of chugging, churning riffs, using hope to stay afloat in a sea of murky sound. At times, an angry, aggressive approach is taken, but by the end of every song, a sign of salvation always remains to redeem all those who made their way through.

"Fallen" (03/04/2003) Heavy Metal Evanescence, Wind-Up RecordsEvanescence: Amy Lee (vocals); Ben Moody (guitar, percussion, programming). Additional personnel: Paul McCoy (vocals); David Hodges (piano, keyboards, programming); Francesco DiCosmo (bass); Josh Freese, Rocky Gray (drums); Zac Baird, Chris Johnson (programming). Evanescence won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. FALLEN was nominated for Album Of The Year and for Best Rock Album. "Bring Me To Life" won for Best Hard Rock Performance. The song was also nominated for Best Rock Song. Personnel: Amy Lee (vocals); David Hodges (piano, keyboards, programming); Josh Freese (drums); Chris Johnson , Zac Baird (programming). Audio Mixers: Dave Fortman ; Jay Baumgardner; Mark Curry. Recording information: Conway Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA; Newman Stage, Twentieth Century Fox; NRG Recording Studios, North Hollywood, CA; Ocean Studios, Burbank, CA; Track Records, Inc., North Hollywood, CA. Arranger: Amy Lee. Picture Tori Amos fronting Nickelback and you'll get an idea of the sound behind Evanescence, an Arkansas quartet whose introduction to the world came via the DAREDEVIL soundtrack. With its debut FALLEN, Evanescence further pushes the envelope on the aforementioned description, with frontwoman Amy Lee pouring her light-yet-strong vocals into the aggro-rock workout "Bring Me to Life" and industrial trip-hop of "My Last Breath." Although guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt leave no riff unplayed on hard-hitting cuts like "Going Under" and "Taking Over Me," Lee brings a nice balance to the table with her gorgeous piano runs, which come to the fore on the very Amos-like "Hello." The perfect balance of hard and soft is met on "Haunted" with its ambient nuance stoked by clattering beats and loops, crunching riffs, and the use of a children's choir. Goth-like in mood yet nu-metal in execution, FALLEN could very well have been where Amos' first group Y Kant Tori Read ended up had they not come along 15 years too soon.

"Queen of the Damned [Soundtrack] [PA]" (02/19/2002) Heavy Metal Original Soundtrack, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)Original songs by Jonathan Davis and Richard Gibbs. Music composed by Jonathan Davis and Richard Gibbs. Personnel: Shankar (vocals); Jonathan Davis (guitar, keyboards); Brian Welch, James "Munky" Shaffer (guitar); Richard Gibbs (keyboards); Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). In Anne Rice's book QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, recurring vampire character Lestadt awakes from a lengthy hibernation and proceeds to remake himself into a rock star of global proportions who ends up attracting the unwanted attentions of head vampire Queen Akasha. Although the late Aaliyah plays the title role in the film, the accompanying soundtrack contains nary a stitch of hip-hop or R&B, instead cleaving to the hard and heavy sounds conjured up by Korn's Jonathan Davis and ex-Oingo Boingo keyboardist Richard Gibbs. Due to contractual obligations, Davis was prevented from singing these songs, therefore the quintet of cuts composed by this duo are sung by an impressive array of talent from the nu-metal world. Marilyn Manson slithers his way through the chilling "Redeemer," Orgy's Jay Gordon haunts the ominous "Slept So Long," and Linkin Park's Chester Bennington makes his solo debut with the eerie "System." Elsewhere, Static-X's namesake Wayne Static growls through the thumping "Not Meant For Me" and Disturbed's David Draiman pours himself into the sweeping "Forsaken," featuring the Middle Eastern-flavored contributions by violinist Shankar. "This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In)" (09/21/2004) Heavy Metal Chevelle, Epic (USA)Chevelle: Peter Chevelle (vocals, guitar); Joseph Chevelle (bass guitar); Samuel Chevelle (drums). Personnel: Dave Holdredge (drum programming). Audio Mixer: Andy Wallace. Recording information: Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA; The Ranch, Chicago, IL. Photographer: Christian Lantry. Following the release of its 1999 debut, POINT #1, Chevelle acquired a more sophisticated sound that can be traced through contributions made to the DAREDEVIL and PUNISHER soundtracks, right up through the metal band's third album, 2004's THIS TYPE OF THINKING (COULD DO US IN). With Peter Chevelle (AKA Loeffler)'s choppy, sinister guitar tones and howling vocals, Chevelle sounds like a distant relative of the Tool/A Perfect Circle family. Throw in the plodding rhythms supplied by his bass-playing brother Joe and their skin-bashing sib Sam, and you have a brooding batch of songs that veers from the moody "The Clincher" and its excellent use of dynamics to the primarily acoustic, but no less compelling, "Bend the Bracket." Not surprisingly, Chevelle has a penchant for writing about some of life's darker subjects, ranging from those struggling to avoid conformity (the relentlessly pounding "Breach Birth") to those who willing embrace it through TV shows like AMERICAN IDOL (a swirling "Get Some"). With THIS TYPE OF THINKING, Chevelle continues to be the standard-bearer of nu metal.

"They're Only Chasing Safety" (06/15/2004) Heavy Metal Underoath, Solid StateUnderoath: Spencer Chamberlain (vocals); James Smith, Timothy McTague (guitar); Christopher Dudley (keyboards); Grant Brandell (bass guitar); Aaron Gillespie (drums, background vocals). Any listener still under the impression that Christian music is strictly light and positive need only listen to a few moments of Underoath's THEY'RE ONLY CHASING SAFETY before realizing that the Lord works in mysterious, and in this case, uncompromisingly rocked-out, ways. The first and most obvious clue that indicates a break with the original CCM soft-pop sound is frontman Spencer Chamberlain's throat-shredding vocal style. With most lyrics emitted in a manner more reminiscent of Morbid Angel than Margaret Becker, the singer makes even Christian-metal masters Pillar and P.O.D. sound tame in comparison. The remaining members of Underoath deal in powerfully direct emo-core, replete with dissonant guitar chords, hyper-speed drumming, and complex rhythmic patterns. Even close examination of THEY'RE ONLY CHASING SAFETY's lyric sheet provides few obvious signs of the band's religious inclinations. That said, the intensity with which Underoath imbues its music is a perfect reflection of the unwavering commitment necessary for an active faith.

"Ten Thousand Fists [PA]" (09/20/2005) Heavy Metal Disturbed, RepriseDisturbed: David Draiman (vocals); Dan Donegan (guitars, keyboards); Mike Wengren (drums). Additional personnel: John Moyer (bass guitar). Five years after Disturbed's crushing debut, the Chicago nu-metal stalwarts offer their third full-length, TEN THOUSAND FISTS. Reunited with long-time producer Johnny K and new bassist John Moyer (Union Underground), Disturbed's return boasts a revitalized edge. TEN THOUSAND FISTS carries the metallic fire of THE SICKNESS, perfectly balanced with the melodic sensibility of 2002's BELIEVE. From the mosh pit-inspiring title track to the provocative and socially conscious lyrics of tracks such as "Deify" and "Sacred Lie," it is abundantly clear that Disturbed has further evolved their brutal-yet-refined approach. TEN THOUSAND FISTS also features striking booklet artwork by comic book legend Todd McFarlane.

"Reanimation" (07/30/2002) Heavy Metal Various Artists, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)REANIMATION is an album of remixes of songs from HYBRID THEORY. Linkin Park: Mike Shinoda (vocals, programming, samples); Chester Bennington (vocals); Brad Delson (guitar, bass, background vocals); Phoenix (bass); Rob Bourdon (drums, background vocals); Joseph Hahn (turntables, programming). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The runaway success of Linkin Park's debut album HYBRID THEORY was a phenomenon the rock world had seldom seen since Guns 'N Roses turned the rock world on it's ear with APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION. With the band preparing a follow-up, an eclectic assembly of both underground and mainstream contributors de- and re-construct the music of Linkin Park on REANIMATION, under the direction of bandmember Mike Shinoda. While the requisite remixes are present, REANIMATION is not your typical remix album. Black Thought (of the Roots) chops up Linkin Park samples for his own rap spotlight on "X-Ecutioner Style," an approach also taken up on "H! Vltg3" by Pharoahe Monch and Dilated Peoples members Evidence and DJ Babu. "Enth E End" gets reinvented by veteran producer Kurtmaster Kurt, with verses laid down by the up-and-coming MC Motion Man. Korn's Jonathan Davis embellishes "1Stp Klosr" with his slow-boiling intensity, while Staind's Aaron Lewis adds emotive harmony vocals to "Krwling." The enhanced portion of the disc includes a music video for "Pts. Of Athrty," as well as links to an internet tool kit that guides fans in the creation of Linkin Park fan sites.

"Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses [PA]" (05/25/2004) Heavy Metal Slipknot, Roadrunner Records (USA)Initial pressings of VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES) include Enhanced CD content. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Far removed from their rap-metal roots, these masked men of extreme metal show no signs of relenting with VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES). For this brutal chapter of the Slipknot story, the jagged sound of fierce heaviness and moody melodicism is executed deftly, as Slipknot ducks crossover cliches and nu-metal formula. Esteemed studio guru Rick Rubin captures the group's raw intensity with sonic reverence, a feat not easily achieved with bands of this style. VOL. 3 delivers all the elements that Slipknot fans have come to expect and demand. From solid, catchy choruses ("Duality") to fearsome blasts of noise and percussive gymnastics ("Three Nil," "Welcome"), and borderline balladry ("Vermilion Pt. 2"), unsettling emotions and images are vividly depicted for the listener by this notorious Iowan ensemble.

Additional personnel: Alison Chesley (cello). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Taking the essence of classic metal and making it contemporary is a feat that Disturbed has accomplished with staggering results. While the band's debut only toyed with melodicism (much of THE SICKNESS was derivative of the growing stable of rap metal bands), BELIEVE is Disturbed's musical arrival. Razor-sharp syncopated riffing is melded with rock radio-friendly melodic vocals, making a jaw-dropping first impression with album-opener "Prayer." The track has the requisite elements to make it an instant metal classic. Disturbed's influences peek through their music, but not in a negative sense; it's clear that Pantera, Metallica and Queensryche were among the artists this band cut their teeth on. "Intoxication" revisits the vocal style that broke the band with "Down With The Sickness," but vocalist David Draiman puts much more effort into a vocal approach that doesn't rely on gimmicks, especially with the big chorus in "Remember" and the splayed vocal harmonies in "Believe." Making the leap into rock balladry, the album closes on an emotional note with "Darkness." With BELIEVE, Disturbed show themselves to be much more than a one-trick pony; instead they carry the torch for metal in the new millennium. "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son [Limited Edition] [Limited]" (01/01/2006) Heavy Metal Iron Maiden, Sanctuary (USA)This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Enhanced portion includes music videos for "Can I Play With Madness," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Clairvoyant" and "Infinite Dreams." Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Adrian Smith (guitar, synthesizer); Dave Murray (guitar); Steve Harris (synthesizer, bass); Nicko McBrain (drums). Recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany. This Limited version features vinyl replica packaging. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Adrian Smith (guitar, synthesizer); Dave Murray (guitar); Steve Harris (string synthesizer); Nicko McBrain (drums). Recording information: Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany. Photographer: Ross Halfin. ON SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON, the songs tell the tale of a young prophet who predicts the destruction of his village, and is ignored when he tries to warn the others. Eventually, the man goes mad and commits suicide. Employing synthesizers, Iron Maiden takes a two-fold risk: with the music and by doing a concept album. This formula might have spelled disaster for most bands, but not Iron Maiden. SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON turned out to be one of the band's strongest releases, debuting in the U.K. charts at Number One, and spawning four Top-10 singles ("Can I Play With Madness," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Prophecy," and "Infinite Dreams"). The band's popularity had reached an all-time high around this time, as Maiden headlined the 1988 Monsters of Rock concert at England's Castle Donnington. During the single-day event, Iron Maiden played to a record 100,000 fans, headlining over such big names as Kiss, David Lee Roth, Guns N' Roses, and Megadeth. In 1988, harsh thrash metal and radio-friendly glam rock were the two chief heavy metal styles. Instead of aligning themselves to either camp, Iron Maiden stuck to their guns and issued a concept album, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Concept albums had spelled disaster for other metal bands in the past, but this proved not to be the case with Maiden, resulting in what many fans consider their last true classic album (and the last with guitarist Adrian Smith, until their late-'90s reunion). Although the songs are all lyrically tied together by the story of a prophet who tries (unsuccessfully) to warn a village of an impending holocaust, they don't have to be listened to in succession to be enjoyed -- one of the main reasons the album worked so well. A total of four singles were issued in the U.K. (all Top Tens) -- "Can I Play With Madness?," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Clairvoyant," and "Infinite Dreams" -- which all prove to be the album's best cuts. But like earlier Maiden albums, this is a complete album -- while "Moonchild," "The Prophecy," "Only the Good Die Young," and the epic title track are not as well-known as the singles, they are just as noteworthy. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son marked the end of a golden era for one of metal's all-time best bands. [On all of Iron Maiden's 1998 reissues on Raw Power a multimedia section is featured on the CD, which includes videos, band biographies, tour date history, and photo galleries.] ~ Greg Prato

"The Imaginary Direction of Time" (04/27/2004) Heavy Metal Winds, The EndWinds includes: Lars Eric Si (vocals); Carl August Tindemann (guitar); Andy Winter (piano); Jan Axel von Blomberg (drums). Winds: Lars Eric Si (vocals, bass guitar); Andy Winter (keyboards); Jan Axel Von Blomberg (drums); Carl August Tidemann. Personnel: Carl August Tidemann (guitar, electric guitar); Vegard Johnsen, Andre Orvik (violin); Dorthe Dreier (viola); Hans Josef Groh (cello); Andy Winter Group (keyboards). Additional personnel: Andre Orvik, Vegard Johnsen (violin); Dorthe Dreier (viola); Hans-Joseph Groh (cello). Audio Mixers: Carl August Tidemann; Andy Winter Group; Scott Ternan. Recording information: Fagerborg Studio (08/2002-12/2003); Toproom Studio (08/2002-12/2003). Arranger: Winds. Winds bring an equivalent mix of classical strings and metallic brawn to this album, although they fortunately don't fall into a time-honored rut of over-the-top guitars and solo virtuosos. This is true on the melodic "What Is Beauty?," which mixes a bit of Queensr?che, System of a Down, and Anathema throughout. A Roger Waters-circa The Wall delivery moves the song further toward a metal slant. Carl August Tidemann has a nice solo here without the classical guitar tone. "Sounds Like Desolation" opens with a disjointed piano solo before the brief instrumental morphs into the guitar-heavy "Theory of Relativity." The softer David Gilmour-like solo is another great asset before they up the sonic ante. What works for Winds is the band's ability to toe the line between strong arrangements that maintain a healthy amount of credibility and originality. Perhaps they venture down the same path one too many times, however, especially on the somber but orchestral "Visions of Perfection," bringing to mind Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" to a certain extent. The delayed harmonies on the song also give it a Queen-ish flavor. This is also heard in Tidemann's solos on the effort, recalling an early Brian May. "The Fireworks of Genesis" has an edgier style going for it, with the rhythm section building on each verse. The strings are unfortunately a bit of overkill on this studio-perfected song. One also expects them to break through with a hard, darker, and more punishing sound, but they rarely do. The concept of time is the biggest lyrical component to the record, but musically Winds go for the anthemic and grandiose arrangement time after time. As a result, the middle area tends to sag. "A Moment for Reflection" is darker to some extent, but vocalist Lars Eric Si relies on the winding nature of the song to carry it along a more melancholic path. The first true highlight is "Time Without End," where the tension is finally cut, but ebbs into a lengthy string and piano blueprint sans guitars. "The Final End" marks a seamless conclusion to "Time Without End," maintaining the same sound. By this time, however, it has become rather monotonous and dull to the listener. ~ Jason MacNeil

"Killers" (01/01/2006) Heavy Metal Iron Maiden, Metal-IsThis is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Enhanced portion includes music videos for "Wrathchild" and "Killers." Iron Maiden: Paul DiAnno (vocals); Dave Murray, Adrian Smith (guitar); Steve Harris (bass); Clive Burr (drums). Engineers: Martin "Headmaster" Birch, Nigel Hewitt. Recorded at Battery Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered by Simon Heyworth (Chop 'Em Out). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. KILLERS is based on more straight-ahead heavy metal, departing from Iron Maiden's 1980 self-titled debut, which had more of a punk edge (a facet often cited as an important stepping stone for "thrash metal" years later). Nonetheless the first album was a huge surprise hit in the band's native England, debuting within the Top Five upon release. The group's second release one year later, KILLERS sets its sights on making inroads in America, touring stateside for the very first time. The album was also the first for guitarist Adrian Smith, who replaced Dennis Stratton. The best-known track remains the renegade rocker "Wrathchild," but other lesser known compositions prove just as strong, such as the gruesome "Murders in the Rue Morgue;" the singles "Purgatory" and "Twilight Zone;" plus the fan favorites "Innocent Exile," "Genghis Khan," "Prodigal Son," and the title track. KILLERS cemented Maiden's standing as one of heavy metal's most promising up-and-coming bands.
