"Metallica: The Ultimate Tribute Album" (08/03/2004) Heavy Metal Various Artists, Big Deal RecordsTributee: Metallica. The cover art for Metallica: The Ultimate Tribute Album is a black-and-purple mess of desktop publishing, and performance credits aren't included for the ten selections on the back. However, despite Big Deal Records' mishandling of the packaging, their tribute to the veteran metal act is actually pretty solid. Mot?rhead opens with "Whiplash," Flotsam & Jetsam turn in a nearly note-perfect rendition of "Damage, Inc.," and the interesting pair of Scott Ian and Helmet's Page Hamilton really get into their version of "Motorbreath." Dark Angel doing "Creeping Death" and a reading of "Trapped Under Ice" by Death Angel are other set highlights. There are numerous Metallica tributes on the market, from Die Krupps' industrial fete in 1993 to the electro-pop of 2002's Metalliclash. But while Metallica: The Ultimate Tribute Album doesn't do itself any favors visually, fans should find these versions worthy. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Phantom Lords: A Tribute To Metallica [Artillery Music]" (04/23/2002) Heavy Metal Various Artists, Artillery MusicMetallica is one of the greatest metal bands of all time, revolutionizing the genre and dragging thrash metal into the mainstream at a time when Poison and Bon Jovi ruled the charts. Thus, like any other influential band, there are countless tribute albums floating around the metal underground in honor of the headbanging foursome. Phantom Lords is one of these, offering 13 covers that are quite faithful to the original versions. The occasional song is given a different take, such as the industrial reworking of "The Thing That Should Not Be" from Low Gear and the goth metal run-through of "Fade to Black" by Pro-fe-cia. But even these aren't very different from the original versions, merely adding keyboards and sound effects where there was previously nothing. Still, the artists here are obviously ardent fans that put a lot of energy and passion into their covers. It's just that Metallica did it better, and faithfully covering these songs only emphasizes how good the original versions were. Collectors may want to hunt this down, but few will find this nearly as engaging as a real Metallica album. ~ Bradley Torreano

"Plays Metallica by Four Cellos" (05/07/2005) Heavy Metal Apocalyptica, Zen Garden (USA)APOCALYPTICA PLAYS METALLICA BY FOUR CELLOS features instrumental cello arrangements of Metallica songs. Apocalyptica: Max Lilja, Antero Manninen, Paavo Lotjonen, Eicca Toppinen (cello). Personnel: Antero Manninen, Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, Max Lilja (cello). Photographer: Juha Laine. The premise of a cello-playing four piece (from Finland, no less) performing the music of Metallica may seem outrageous at first, but much of the metal gods' repertoire translates surprisingly well into this "classical" reading. And while Apocalyptica chooses to concentrate on more recent hits like "Enter Sandman," "Sad But True" and "Wherever I May Roam" for obvious commercial purposes, it is Metallica's earlier, more complex compositions, like "Master of Puppets," "Creeping Death," and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," which actually work best in this scenario. The quartet's love and understanding of the music is the real key here, and their attention to detail and technically flawless performance will no doubt satisfy even the most skeptical of fans. And while it is unlikely that this album will interest non-Metallica fans, it obviously inspired the band themselves to explore the classical direction on their own terms with 1999's S&M album. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

"Ride the Lightning" (09/30/2003) Rock & Pop Metallica, CBS Records (Japan)Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark in Spring 1984. Japanese exclusive rerelease comes in a vinyl style sleeve. Metallica turned the metal world on its ear with their debut album, KILL 'EM ALL and then blew its mind with the follow-up, RIDE THE LIGHTNING. The riffs and arrangements are more intricate, the lyrics are more intelligent and biting and James Hetfield's growl is meaner. The set starts out with two tunes that would have been right at home on KILL 'EM ALL, but the next two are slower and more involved. "Ride The Lightning" is a slow (by Metallica's standards) dirge about the futility of war. "Fade To Black" is a ballad (!) that builds to an instrumental coda featuring the guitar melodies that the band would later base their sound around. It's also Hetfield's first attempt at singing in tune. The most ambitious song is a dense instrumental, "The Call Of Ktulu," that starts with a single arpeggiated guitar and slowly adds layer upon layer, building in intensity until it all comes crashing down nine minutes later.
