"Resident Evil: Apocalypse [Original Soundtrack]" (08/31/2004) Heavy Metal Original Soundtrack, Roadrunner Records (USA)Composer: Jeff Danna. Personnel: Liv Kristine Espenaes Krull (vocals); Branden Steineckert (drums). Audio Mixers: Colin Richardson; Robert Smith ; David Bendeth; David J. Holman; Greg Fidelman; Greg Reely; J.R. McNeely; John Feldmann; John Fryer; Mark "Spike" Stent; Andy Sneap; Andy Wallace; Ross Robinson; Steve Evetts; Terry Date; Waldemar Sorychta ; Dani Filth; Stefan Glaumann; Chad I. Ginsburg. Audio Remixers: Critter; Danny Lohner; Josh Freese; Joshua Eustis. A highly anticipated entry in the science-fiction/horror genre, RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE is the sequel to the 2002 video-game-based blockbuster film RESIDENT EVIL. Like its predecessor, the attendant soundtrack is jam-packed with extremely heavy and dark music. Slipknot, DevilDriver, and Rammstein represent the harsher, growling vocal-fueled, death metal-influenced contingent, while the Cure and HIM's sinewy doom-and-gloom reflects the movie's gothic, smoke-and-fog atmosphere. The APOCALYPSE album also includes a bit of raging emo-core from Thrice, and veteran trip-hop ensemble Massive Attack fits in nicely, closing the disc with the suitably creepy "Future Pool." That rare soundtrack that admirably collects songs completely appropriate to the picture in question, RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE works both as aural cinema and as a thoroughly engaging compilation.

"Themeaddict: WWE the Music, Vol. 6 [Bonus DVD]" (11/16/2004) Heavy Metal Original Soundtrack, Columbia (USA)This includes a bonus DVD. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. As the composer behind entrance themes for the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment, formerly the World Wrestling Federation) for more than two decades, Jim Johnston came a long way from the days of Hulk Hogan's "Real American." In 2004, the WWE released THEMEADDICT, a compilation of Johnston's theme songs that traffics in a contemporary alt-rock/hip-hop vibe guaranteed to connect with a young audience. Motorhead serves as the elder statesmen on this collection with "Line in the Sand," a song that gives wrestling star Evolution a sinister leg up, thanks to a combination of Lemmy's growl and some sinewy guitar playing. Although there are other metal-tinged tunes, the mix offers a surprisingly dynamic selection of musical styles. "Chavito Ardiente" is a crisp bit of mariachi-inflected pop used by Chavo Guerrero. John Cena even goes as far as to incorporate a sample of Big Daddy Kane's "Any Type of Way" amidst the crisp flow of "Untouchables." Leavening the mood is Gail Kim's lush dance theme "International Woman." For those craving a visual element, a bonus DVD, featuring numerous videos, is included.

"MTV2 Headbangers Ball, Vol. 2" (09/28/2004) Heavy Metal Various Artists, Roadrunner Records (USA)Personnel: Eric Wagner (vocals); Scott "Wino" Weinrich (guitar); Dave Grohl (drums). Audio Mixers: Colin Richardson; Critter; Daniel Bergstrand; Dave Fortman ; Eric Rachel; Frank Filipetti; Fredrik Nordstr?m ; Greg Fidelman; Greg Reely; Himsa; Orjan Ornkloo; Satyr; Jason Suecof; Jeff Balding; Adam Dutkiewicz; John Fryer; Matt Hyde ; Mikko Karmila; Mudrock ; Anders Frid?n; Neil Kernon; Andy Sneap; Andy Wallace; Randy Staub ; Steve Carter; Steve Evetts; Steve Thompson ; Terry Date; Todd Fitzgerald; Ulrich Wild; Barry Conley; Zakk Wylde; Zeuss; Ben Grosse; Dani Filth; Josh Wilbur; Machine. Recording information: MTV Studios (01/28/2004). This second installment of MTV's HEADBANGERS BALL compilation series features a daunting 40 tracks that splinter off into numerous jagged branches of the metal tree circa 2004. Iowan ensemble Slipknot kicks things off with the riff-loaded yet surprisingly melodic "Duality," revealing (along with their peers Korn) that the rap aspect of nu metal has essentially been buried. The metal-core sub-genre makes a strong showing with tracks by Killswitch Engage ("Rose of Sharyn") and Eighteen Visions ("Waiting for the Heavens"), while European acts are well represented by the glam-goth of Finland's HIM ("Your Sweet Six Six Six") and the dynamic attack of the Swedish band In Flames ("The Quiet Place"). Elsewhere, Megadeth's Dave Mustaine shows the youngsters how it's done on his band's blistering "Kick the Chair." The true highlight of the double-disc set, however, is the Black Sabbath-inspired "My Tortured Soul," a rare live performance by Foo Fighter Dave Grohl's Probot project, featuring Trouble's Eric Wagner. Harking back to early-1980s metal, this song effectively provides a bridge from that era to the heavy rock of the 21st century.

"Eclipse: Piano Tribute to Evanescence" (01/04/2005) Heavy Metal Various Artists, Vitamin Records (USA)Tributee: Evanescence. Recording information: Sonora Recorders. Arranger: Ark Sano. Vitamin follows Eclipse: Piano Tribute to Evanescence with this flawed electronica-themed tribute. The grace and anthemic power that drives the best of Evanescence's music disappears here under layers of muddled electronic noodling. There's very little guitar here, and no vocals. Instead string sections and pianos try to handle the melodies, but they abut drum programming that's mixed way too loud or beyond-bad ideas like the teetering keyboard whine in "Taking Over Me." At least the piano tribute had some nicely introspective moments. In contrast Electro Tribute to Evanescence is an overblown and misguided mess. ~ Johnny Loftus Ark Sano arranges the music of Evanescence for solo instrumental piano on this tribute to the gothic-tinged modern rock group. Sano accentuates the austere, reflective qualities in the melodies for "My Immortal" and especially "Going Under"; both are contemplative and understated here, with plenty of lingering notes. By contrast Evanescence's breakthrough hit, "Bring Me to Life," is more conventional. But it sticks to the usual template for Vitamin pop tributes, offering a matter-of-fact restatement of the original, sans vocal and modified for the new instrument. Other set highlights include the contemplative "Tourniquet," "Taking Over Me," and "My Last Breath." ~ Johnny Loftus

"Spider-Man 2 [Original Soundtrack]" (06/22/2004) Heavy Metal Original Soundtrack, Columbia (USA)This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Composer: Danny Elfman. Personnel: Stockholm Session Orchestra (strings). Audio Mixers: Chris Lord-Alge; Martin Hansen; Manny Marroquin; Dave Sardy; David J. Holman; Dennis Sands; Don Gilmore; Eric Valentine ; Mikael Andersson; Jay Baumgardner; Lou Giordano; Neal Avron; Andy Wallace; Jason Lader. Arrangers: Martin Hansen; Mikael Andersson. Since Hollywood movie soundtracks often feature music that is popular during the release of the attendant film, delving into the soundtrack category is a great way to hear what teenagers are into at a particular pop-culture moment. As such, the original SPIDER-MAN movie featured a preponderance of nu-metal and neo-grunge that was not only appropriate to the film's fast-action pace, but also wildly popular in 2002. Times and tastes change, though, and for 2004's SPIDER-MAN 2, Chad Kroeger, Alien Ant Farm, and Black Lab are replaced by equally energetic, but decidedly less metallic delegates from the pop (Train, Maroon 5), rock (the Ataris, Jet), and emo (Dashboard Confessional, Midtown) camps. After a quick old-guard showing from Smile Empty Soul, the disc wraps up with several bits of score music from the timelessly appropriate Danny Elfman. A good aural representation of both the super-hero and shy-student sides of the Spider-Man/Peter Parker dichotomy, this soundtrack is an exciting listen for mainstream music fans and Spidey buffs alike.

"Hell Bent for Metal: A Tribute to Judas Priest" (07/13/1999) Heavy Metal Various Artists, Dwell MinistriesThere are already several Judas Priest tribute albums on the market, tributes that feature well-known '90s metal bands and outfits that fit into the underground European power-metal revival of the late '90s -- in other words, quality bands with a logical connection to Priest's music, which was one of the most influential heavy metal catalogs ever. The selection of mostly obscure acts on Dwell's Hell Bent for Metal: A Tribute to Judas Priest thus seems anticlimactic, since one can hear not only the original Priest recordings, but also a number of bands redoing many of these songs with more affection and flair than is found here. A few bands do acquit themselves well, but overall, it's hard to shake that "pure product" feeling. ~ Steve Huey
