"Ultimate Soul [Madacy]" (11/25/2003) R&B Various Artists, Madacy DistributionLiner Note Author: David Roy. One would be foolish to have a problem with a one-disc soul overview including Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," Sam & Dave's "Hold On! I'm Comin'," the Spinners' "I'll Be Around," Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By," Aretha Franklin's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T," Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," and Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia." Ultimate Soul doesn't just score points for what it chooses to include. Unlike most other soul compilations, it's generous -- it includes over a dozen other hits from the '60s and '70s. As a quick beginners' guide, you couldn't ask for much more. ~ Andy Kellman

"Motown Soul Jams, Vol. 1" (02/11/2003) R&B Various Artists, Motown RecordsArranger: Narada Michael Walden. Motown continues efforts to maintain label identity with Motown Soul Jams, Vol. 1, a compilation of highlights from their roster that covers the late '90s and early 2000s. Not every artist they cultivated during this period took off -- see 702, Grenique, and Profyle -- but the label did boast the presence of some big, successful names on their release schedule. Late-'90s hits like Chico DeBarge's "No Guarantee," Erykah Badu's "Next Lifetime," the Temptations' "Stay," and Boyz II Men's "Doin' Just Fine" are featured. Later singles that varied from failure to success are included, such as Remy Shand's "Take a Message," India.Arie's "Brown Skin," and Lathun's "Fortunate." As good as this disc is overall, its appeal is limited. Only those who have avoided buying the big albums from which some of these songs are plucked will have much use for it. ~ Andy Kellman

Ernest III (drums). Audio Mixers: Hammond Scott; David Farrell . Liner Note Authors: John Sinclair; Shawn Amos. Recording information: Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans, LA (04/1993). Editors: Hammond Scott; David Farrell . Photographer: Rick Olivier. Unknown Contributor Role: George Porter, Jr. With his many businesses in wildly differing fields, it's a wonder Solomon Burke finds the time to record at all. A quick perusal of SOUL OF THE BLUES's liner notes reveals him to be, among other things, "...proprietor of a chain of funeral homes, owner of a multi-city limousine service, drugstore operator and distributor of his own line of roots, herbs and religious articles." First and foremost though, he's one of the great purveyors of deep soul, country soul, Southern soul, and pretty much any other kind of soul he's asked to sing. Here he applies his considerable vocal talents to reworking a dozen blues classics, backed by a classy New Orleans crew that's smooth as butter and sharp as tacks, as required. Willie Dixon's "My Babe" is given the full New Orleans second-line treatment, while Ray Brown's "Good Rockin' Tonight" finds Burke giving an excellent impersonation of a blues shouter. He's at his best on the deeper, slower material such as "Letter From My Darling," which gives him a chance to flex his preacher muscles as well as show off his almost casual mastery of the country soul ballad, a genre he pretty much invented. SOUL OF THE BLUES displays Solomon Burke's loose, relaxed brilliance at its best.

"Soul of the 80's, Vol. 1" (1999) R&B Various Artists, Madacy DistributionIncludes liner notes by Dave Roy Personnel: Rick Iantosca (guitar, keyboards, percussion). Illustrator: Brad Hamann. Arranger: Rick Iantosca. This budget-line disc is a pleasant mix of ballads (Larry Graham's "One in a Million You," Atlantic Starr's "Always," Shirley Murdock's "As We Lay") and dance lite (Al B. Sure's "Night and Day," Ready for the World's "Oh Sheila," Levert's "Casanova"). The collection is a decent, albeit incomplete, slice of '80s soul hits. Like the rest of this series, the disc has nonexistent liner notes and banal cover art that has nothing to do with the music on the CD. ~ Gina Boldman
