Dylan proved to be not only one of the most bootlegged of 20th Century performers, but also one of the first (GREAT WHITE WONDER was one of the releases that turned bootlegging from a pastime into an industry). Over the years, Dylan's legions of fans rabidly traded recordings of live shows, out-takes, demos and other rare material. THE BOOTLEG SERIES attempts to supply the definitive collection of what had been bootlegged material. Its three discs move along chronologically, spanning the length of Dylan's career and providing candid, previously verboten glimpses into his creative process, and consequently, his musical genius. The first disc features some intriguing versions of traditional tunes like "He Was a Friend Of Mine" and "House Carpenter," and some obscure cuts from his "protest" period, such as "Paths of Victory" and "Who Killed Davy Moore?" Disc two finds him in his prime, moving from alternative versio

SOLO is a snazzy repackaging of the late Queen frontman's solo career, with improved sonics. It includes Freddie Mercury's two official Queen-less albums, including BARCELONA, his jaw-droppingly bizarre collaboration with opera star Montserrat Caballe (who, besides Mercury, could ever have imagined such a pairing?), plus a bonus CD of singles and rarities. The latter disc contains some of Mercury's best music. It includes a beautiful Phil Spector-ish version of "I Can Hear Music" (originally released, at the height of Gary Glitter's fame, under the parodic nom du disque Larry Lurex), and a wonderfully over the top remake of the Platters' "The Great Pretender."

Arrangers: Jack Douglas; Aerosmith; Michael Mainieri, Jr.; Steven Tyler. Wondering how Aerosmith ended up with such a legendary reputation? The answer can be found for those who dive into this special package of Aerosmith's first three albums and behold the magic woven by America's premiere hard-rock band before excess and ego took over. Coming out of Boston in 1973 with its self-titled debut, this quintet was originally derided as an American version of the Rolling Stones thanks to the physical similarities between Jagger/Richards and Tyler/Perry. But with such future hits as "Dream On," "Walk This Way," and "Sweet Emotion," Aerosmith showed that it was blazing its own path. With influences that ranged from the Memphis soul of Rufus Thomas ("Walking the Dog") and the jump blues of Bullmoose Jackson ("Big Ten Inch Record") to the British Invasion blues-rock of the Yardbirds ("Train Kept a Rollin'"), the boys from Beantown were as much rock fans as rock stars. In addition to the aforementioned covers and hits, lesser-known but equally worthy originals to check out include "Mama Kin," "Seasons of Wither," "Uncle Salty," and "Lord of the Thighs," all crucial building blocks in the Aerosmith legacy.

"My Lives" (11/22/2005) Rock & Pop Joel, Billy, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel: Billy Joel (vocals, accordion, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, harpsichord, Clavinet, organ, keyboards, bass guitar); Probyn Gregory (vocals, guitar, trumpet, flugelhorn, French horn); Jeffrey Foskett (vocals, guitar, sleigh bell); Nick Walusko (vocals, guitar); Darian Sahanaja, Scott Bennett (vocals, piano, organ, vibraphone, glockenspiel); Dave Brown , Elton John, Brian Wilson (vocals, piano); John Edward Dizek (vocals, percussion); Taylor Mills, Zhournalist (vocals); Dann Huff, Don Evans, John McCurry, Russell Javors, Jim Bosse, Tommy Byrnes, Ken Recher, Richie McKenna, Sal DeTroia (guitar); Steve Khan (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Mac McAnally (acoustic guitar); Eric Gale (electric guitar); Sneaky Pete (steel guitar); Paul Franklin (pedal steel guitar); Hugh McCracken (nylon-string guitar); World Famous Incognito Violinist (fiddle); Paul Mertens (flute, harmonica, saxophone); Clint Black (harmonica); Dominic Cortese (accordion); Mark Rivera (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); David Sanborn (alto saxophone); Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone); Jon Faddis, Bob Winiker, Joe Shepley (trumpet); Jim Hoke, Jim Horn, Hollywood Paul Litteral, Charles Rose (horns); Matt Rollings (piano); Richard Tee, Richie Cannata, Steve Nathan (organ); Leon Pendarvis, Steve Winwood (Hammond b-3 organ); Jeff Jacobs (synthesizer); Emory Gordy, Larry Knechtel, Neil Jason, Randy Jackson , T-Bone Wolk, Will Lee , Joe Osborn, Bob Lizik, Schuyler Deale, Doug Stegmeyer, Howard Arthur Blauvelt (bass guitar); Jim Hines, Jonathan Small, Willie Weeks, Charlie Morgan , Sean Pelton, Rhys Clark, Liberty DeVitto, Bill Zampino, David Baglioli, Denny Siewell (drums); Anton Fig (snare drum); David Friedman (percussion, chimes); Kim Fleming, Bob Bailey, Yvonne Hodges (background vocals); Mike D'Amico, Brian Ruggles. Arranger: Robert Freedman. Something of a companion piece to Billy Joel's greatest hits collections, this exhaustive box set comprises four CDs (and a bonus DVD) of rarities, B-sides, demos, covers, and recordings that have fallen between the cracks in Joel's discography. Those looking for the studio versions of "My Life," "Just the Way You Are," and "Uptown Girl" won't find them here; this collection is a different animal altogether. With an eye toward representing Joel as an adventurous craftsman and tireless reviser, MY LIVES is packed with one-off concert performances and intimate, unreleased demos (which often differ radically from the well-known final versions) that paint an interesting portrait of Joel's creative process. Disc one stretches back to Joel's pre-solo career, including songs by his garage-pop band the Hassles and his snicker-inducing heavy metal project Atilla. But it is with Joel's PIANO MAN demos that one can hear the artist finding his feet ("Oyster Bay" is one of the set's highlights). While discs three and four may contain too many covers (do we really need to hear Joel's rendition of "When You Wish Upon a Star?"), there are some interesting selections of his classical work from the 2000s. Despite its shortcomings, MY LIVES provides valuable insight into Joel's evolution as a songwriter and performer, which makes it intriguing for casual fans, and essential for devotees.

"Labour of Love I, II & III: The Platinum Collection [Box]" (09/02/2003) Rock & Pop UB40, Virgin Records (USA)UB40: Ali Campbell, Robin Campbell (vocals, guitar); Norman Lamont Hassan (vocals, harmonica, percussion); Earl Falconer (vocals, bass); Astro (vocals); Brian Travers (saxophone); Michael Virtue (keyboards); James Brown (drums). Additional personnel: Martin Meredith (alto saxophone); Laurence Parry (trumpet, flugal horn, trombone); Patrick Tenyue, Henry Tenyue (trumpet); Henry Tenyue (trombone); Dan Armstrong, Danny Canaan (keyboards). Recorded at Dep International Studios, Birmingham, England. Includes liner notes by Doctor X. For those UB40 fans who have to have everything, this triple-disc box replaces the Labour of Love albums individually -- or at least it is meant to. Virtually every single is here, and there's a load of B-sides, 12" mixes, and the best of the album cuts. Only the hardest of the hardcore followers of the band will be slapping down the cash for this, however, since Labour of Love is far too much of a good thing for the average or novice listener. ~ Thom Jurek

"The Best of David Bowie 1969/1974 [Slipcase]" (01/10/2006) Rock & Pop Bowie, David, Virgin Records (USA)Recorded between 1969 and 1974. Includes liner notes by Steven Gizicki. This is part of EMI Records' Essential Limited Edition series. Although numerous David Bowie compilations have been released over the years, the three-disc PLATINUM COLLECTION is one of the most thorough overviews of the famously mercurial performer, spanning the years 1969 to 1987. While the first two discs here were previously available individually (covering '69-74 and '74-79, respectively), the third disc marks the debut of the '80-87 retrospective, a wildly eclectic offering that includes revered classics (the restless "Space Oddity" sequel, "Ashes to Ashes," and the pulsing "Fashion"), massive hits (the inescapable "Let's Dance" and the Queen collaboration "Under Pressure"), and rarities (the haunting Brecht/Weill number "Alabama Song" and the chiming "Underground," from the fantasy film LABYRINTH). This 57-track collection is ideal for those wanting to dive deeper than Bowie's celebrated singles. It's also a nice reminder of his avoidance of musical complacency and his insistence on pushing the boundaries of pop music.

"The Platinum Collection, Vol. 1-3 [Box]" (09/17/2002) Rock & Pop Queen, Hollywood RecordsQueen: Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon. Additional personnel: Elton John, George Michael, David Bowie, Montserrat Caballe (vocals); Wyclef Jean, Pras (rap vocals). Producers include: Queen, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, David Richards, Mike Moran. Recorded between 1974 & 1997. Includes liner notes by Jim Jenkins, Jacky Smith, Andy Davis, Phil Symes. All tracks have been digitally remastered. With Queen officially enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Hollywood Records reintroduces the band yet again with the release of GREATEST HITS I, II & III. While Volumes I and II are full of Queen classics you already know by heart, the third cobbles together odds and sods from the far corners of Queen's canon along with solo cuts from Freddie Mercury and Brian May. Opening with the operatic rock classic "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's easy to hear not only how this British quartet achieved the kind of global acclaim that ensured they'd be enshrined alongside the likes of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. When they weren't dabbling in playful '50s-flavored rock & roll ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love"), catchy glam ("Killer Queen"), or hard-edged funk ("Another One Bites The Dust"), Queen was capable of delivering heartfelt love letters ("You're My Best Friend"). The band's '80s output is equally intriguing, ranging from the hard-hitting "Headlong" to duets with David Bowie ("Under Pressure") and soaring movie anthems ("One Vision"). The third volume features more movie themes ("Princes Of The Universe"), Freddie Mercury covering The Platters ("The Great Pretender"), and cameos by contemporary artists like Wyclef Jean, George Michael and Elton John.

"Old Friends" (11/04/1997) Rock & Pop Simon & Garfunkel, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel includes: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); Art Garfunkel (vocals). Producers includes: Roy Halee, Tom Wilson, Bob Johnston, Paul Simon, John Simon. Compilation producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded between 1964 and 1975. Includes liner notes by David Fricke and Bob Irwin. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were initially inspired by the Everly Brothers and under the name Tom And Jerry enjoyed a hit with 'Hey Schoolgirl'. The duo reunited in 1964 for Wednesday Morning 3AM, which included an acoustic reading of 'The Sound Of Silence'. Producer Tom Wilson made the presumptuous but prescient decision to overdub 'Sound Of Silence' with electric instrumentation and an album titled after the million-selling single was rush-released early in 1966. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme had a varied mood from the grandly serious 'For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her' to the bouncy '59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)'. The duo contributed Mrs. Robinson to the soundtrack of the 1968 film, The Graduate. That same year saw the release of Bookends, a superbly-crafted work. In 1969 the duo released the celebrated Bridge Over Troubled Water. One of the best-selling albums of all time, the work's title track became a standard with its lush, orchestral arrangement and contrasting tempo. While at the peak of their commercial success, the duo became irascible and their partnership abruptly ceased. Since then there have been sporadic reunions, most notably The Concert In Central Park.

"The Collection [Box Set] [Long Box]" (11/15/2005) Rock & Pop Taylor, James (Soft Rock), Legacy Recordings3 LPs on 3 CDs: JT (1977)/THAT'S WHY I'M HERE (1985)/NEVER DIE YOUNG (1988). Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, guitar); Don Henley, Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon (vocals); Danny Kortchmar, Bob Mann (guitar); Dan Dugmore (pedal steel guitar, banjo); David Sanborn, Michael Brecker (saxophone); Don Grolnick, Billy Payne, Dr. Clarence McDonald (keyboards); Leland Sklar (bass instrument); Tony Levin (bass guitar); Russ Kunkel, Carlos Vega (drums, percussion); Airto Moreira (percussion); Deniece Williams, Graham Nash, Joni Mitchell, Lani Groves (background vocals). Simply put, there are three James Taylor albums in this box: the hit JT (1977), That's Why I'm Here from 1985, and the truly awful Never Die Young from 1988. If you are a fan, you most likely either have them or avoided the last one for good reason. If you are looking to dig into James Taylor, there are far better places to start. This is simply marketing that's trying to fool people. ~ Thom Jurek
