JVC's DS-TP330 receiver/speaker package could be your first step into the world of home theater. Add a DVD player and a TV, and you, too, can be enjoying the joys of home theater. The receiver, the RX-6008VBK by name, includes amplifiers with discrete output transistors, usually a better choice for decent sound quality. Although the specs claim 100 watts per channel, that rating is, er, a bit generous. Measured by the same standards used for its 2-channel power spec, we estimate that the "real-world" output capability is somewhere around a still respectable 80 watts per channel. The RX-6008VBK has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, so you're set for almost any source out there. Dolby Pro-Logic processing gives you the "retro" capability with which you can get the full effect of surround-encoded videotapes and TV shows. Four DSP (digital signal processing) modes and a 3-band EQ (equalizer) let you tweak the sound to your liking. There are enough inputs and outputs for all but the obsessed -- there's even a phono input for those who still spin the occasional LP! Three composite video inputs, two composite video outputs, four audio RCA inputs, and one audio RCA output allow you to hook up a number of components. The S-video jacks (three in, one out) give you a better picture than from the composite jacks. The digital audio inputs are assignable, and the tuner has 45 presents (15 AM, 30 FM). The DS-TP330 also includes five magnetically shielded ("put 'em anywhere") two-way speakers that'll do reasonable justice to anything but bass. (What do you expect from a 3-inch "woofer"?) Each speaker houses a 1/2-inch liquid-cooled dome tweeter to handle the highs, while a 10-inch powered subwoofer (which is driven by its own 100-watt amplifier) handles the lows. -- PJR
