The fifth season of this popular spinoff of WB's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER features more battles between the powers of good, evil, and in-between, with storylines that are humorous, hip, and somewhat soap-operatic. After centuries as a practicing vampire, Angel (David Boreanaz) is now motivated by guilt to rid Los Angeles of the multitudes of evil beings that infest it. He leads his team of immortal beings, who are now running the firm of former enemy Wolfram and Hart, in the fight against the forces of darkness. He also must battle his own dark side, which causes him, at times, to lose heart in his pursuit of heroism. In this season, Angel is about to give up, until someone from his past returns to inspire him. Also, a disembodied Spike spends a great deal of time attempting to become corporeal once again. A new liaison with The Powers That Be appears in the form of a young woman named Eve, but is she really who she says she is? Episodes include: "Conviction (1)," "Unleashed," "Hell Bound," "Life of the Party," "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco," "Harm's Way," "Soul Purpose," "Why We Fight," "A Hole in the World," "Shells," "The Girl in Question," "Power Play," "Not Fade Away," and others.

In Alan Parker's ANGEL HEART, based on the novel FALLING ANGEL by William Hjortsberg, a New York City gumshoe is hired to find an aging blues singer. Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) follows clues from the ominous ghettos of Harlem to the witchy backwoods of Louisiana, where he takes up with Epiphany Proudfoot (Lisa Bonet), the beautiful young daughter of a voodoo priestess, whom he believes will be able to shed light on the growing mystery surrounding the missing musician. As Angel closes in on the truth of the case, his contacts start turning up dead. He begins to suspect he might be next. Parker (MISSISSIPPI BURNING) threads a commentary on the limitations of modern Western society into his sensual, suspenseful thriller. As the story unfolds, Angel relies less and less on his failing, overwhelmed rational mind (and handgun) and more on Epiphany's ancient mojo. Rourke captures the unraveling protagonist perfectly, and Bonet adds an erotic and mysterious edge with her performance. Robert De Niro is both funny and malevolent as Angel's mysterious client, Louis Cyphre. Shimmering with a beguiling mist of the macabre, ANGEL HEART provides an unexpectedly haunting dose of gothic noir.

For thousands of years spiritualists, numerologitsts, and all interested in mystical forces upon the future have sought the ancient relic the Loculus. As a secret society slaughters groups of people in search of the artifact, the Loculus turns up in the back of a camper in the year 2001. A billionaire (Terence Stamp) seeks to obtain the relic, aided by his son (James D'Arcy) and an alchemist (Natasha Wightman). Their search is not solitary, a fact they discover by meeting the Grand Master (Udo Kier), a demonic being who has wandered the Earth since Christ's crucifixion. One of many interesting films to arrive at the turn of the century depicting a journey for a code with the key to the future. Steeped in myth and legend, the film possesses a great meditative power and culminates in a battle between two acting legends in Kier and Stamp, whose similar features provide a perfect counterpoint.
