The Old Dark House
James Whale's horror-comedy classic is one of the first and best of the travelers-forced-to-spend-the-night-in-a spooky-house genre films. Driving through a dangerous rainstorm, Philip and Margaret Waverton (Raymond Massey, Gloria Stuart) and friend Penderel (Melvyn Douglas) must seek shelter at a foreboding Welsh mansion. Met by the disfigured, mute butler Morgan (Boris Karloff) and the bizarre members of the Femm family, the guests quickly realize that something is awry in the shadowy mansion. When the lights go out, the situation becomes even more ominous. Will the stranded travelers make it through the night in the old dark house?
Isle of the Snake People DVD [Used]
"Voodoo! Zombies! Cannibal women!" exclaims the Chief of Police (Ralph Bertrand) after finding a mutilated corpse shortly assuming control of a mysterious island in the Caribbean. Also newly arrived to the island is Mademoiselle Wunderberg, the niece of mysterious Mr. Van Molder (Boris Karloff) a plantation owner who conducts strange experiments with telekinesis involving his maid Kalea (Yolanda Montes), queen of voodoo. Kalea does lots of scantily dressed snake dancing amid the flames and beating bongo drums, while a painted dwarf in sunglasses keeps the candles lit, and the victims whipped to within an inch of their lives. Elsewhere, a group of cannibal women devour errant men, and one of Van Molder's ringleaders has resurrected a zombie for necrophiliac purposes. In the film's weirdest moment, Kalea casts a spell over Mmme. Wunderberg and she has a dream her double rises out of a coffin and sexually molests herself with a snake. It's all part of the mysterious plan to make Damballah appear, but the identity of Damballah is a mystery, as are what other horrors may await in this bizarre Mexican-American production, one of Boris Karloff's final films.

Fear Chamber (DVD NEW)
Boris Karloff stars in one of his final films as geo-biologist Dr. Mantel, whose colleagues find an intelligent, living rock inside a volcano. Aided by his lovely daughter Corine (Julissa), Mantel sets the rock up in a chamber in their space-age labs, and hooks it up to computers in order to extract its wisdom. To survive, the rock must be injected with the blood of terrified women, and for this purpose the scientists expose various scantily dressed females to an elaborate, cobweb filled chamber of horrors, replete with skeletons, spiders, a menacing dwarf, and a pool filled with blood and sea serpents Instead of helping these determined scientists, however, the ungrateful rock creature grows tentacles and learns to control the computers, and even the minds of some of the employees, including dim-witted Roland (Yerye Beirut). It's all too much for Dr. Mantel, who retires to bed for the remainder of the film, allowing his daughter to take things to kinky new levels, hiring strippers to dance for the rock, and even whipping and murdering naked, pleading girls for its amusement. Altogether this is a bizarre effort, which requires some viewer discretion.
Isle Of The Dead / Bedlam - Val Lewton Horror Double Feature (DVD NEW)
This set contains two classic horror films from producer Val Lewton. While rarely considered to be one of Val Lewton's best films, ISLE OF THE DEAD does contain the producer's typically effective use of atmosphere. Set during the 1912 war on a Greek Island, the film focuses on six people who are staying on a remote island in order to escape the plague. Boris Karloff gives his typically strong performance as General Pherides, while Ellen Drew plays a Greek girl suspected of being a vampire. Constant winds and creepy sets illustrate each character's general anxiety as disease and suspicions build to a chilling climax. An intriguing change of pace from chillmaster Val Lewton, BEDLAM tells the story of an innocent girl imprisoned in a ghastly 18th-century insane asylum. Nell, an aspiring young actress, rejects the patronage of a London nobleman after learning of the aristocrat's indifference to sadistic practices at the local insane asylum. When word of Nell's accusations reach Master Sims (Boris Karloff), the villainous director of the madhouse, the brutal "doctor" attempts to protect his own reputation by casting doubt on the young woman's sanity.

Monsters And Madmen
MONSTERS AND MADMEN is a set from the Criterion Collection that collect four classic films about murder and mania. Two Boris Karloff features, THE HAUNTED STRANGLER and CORRIDORS OF BLOOD are included, as are THE ATOMIC SUBMARINE and FIRST MAN INTO SPACE, two science fiction gems from the atomic age. Criterion does its usual superb work with high definition transfers, and the set is loaded with bonus features including commentary, interviews, trailers, and galleries.
I Walked With a Zombie/The Body Snatcher
This set contains two classic horror films from producer Val Lewton. Released shortly after the film CAT PEOPLE, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE marked another successful collaboration between producer Val Lewton and director Jacques Tourneur. Filled with eerie atmosphere and chilling sets, the film follows a young Canadian nurse named Betsy (Frances Dee) as she travels to a Caribbean Island to treat a plantation manager's sick wife. The nurse finds the island to be inhabited by strange creatures and all kinds of eerie voodoo legends. As she develops feelings for her boss, Betsy makes it her goal to heal his wife Jessica even if it requires resorting to voodoo. In THE BODY SNATCHER, Robert Wise's creepy, intricate horror film, a 19th-century Edinburgh doctor and medical school professor, Dr. MacFarlane (Henry Daniell), has been relying upon unappeasable grave robber John Grey (Boris Karloff) to provide him with corpses for his experiments. His young assistant, Donald Fettes (Russell Wade), is shocked when he learns how they come to be in possession of their cadavers, but his admiration for MacFarlane leads him to keep the doctor's illegal dealings a secret. However, when their supply of fresh cadavers begins to dwindle, Grey taunts the doctor with a secret even greater than their body snatching. Meanwhile, Fettes must keep up his hardworking, moral front for Mrs. Marsh (Rita Corday), whose crippled little girl, Georgina (Sharyn Moffett), he's treating. Based on the famous Robert Louis Stevenson story, THE BODY SNATCHER incorporates a subplot based on the actual account of 19th-century Edinbugh murderers Burke and Hare. This chilling, atmospheric film features what is arguably one of Karloff's greatest performances as the menacing, murderous Grey. It also features a fantastic scene between Karloff and the legendary Bela Lugosi (as MacFarlane's servant Joseph), the only one the two ever filmed together.

Voodoo Island/Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake
VOODOO ISLAND: A 1950s B-movie whose charm stems from the absurdity of its plotline and über-campy dialogue, this pseudo-shocker mixes elements of science fiction and horror, with a cast helmed by frightmeister Boris Karloff (FRANKENSTEIN). Phillip Knight is a well-known adventurer who investigates hoaxes and myths for a living. He is hired by Barney Finch (Murvyn Vye, A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT), a wealthy hotel magnate, to investigate tales of a voodoo curse on an island he wants to buy. Once there, however, Knight finds out that this is one supposed hoax that is actually true! Man-eating plants, a voodoo tribe, and zombies will all make an appearance before the hilariously anticlimactic dénouement. Elisha Cook Jr., Rhodes Reason, and Beverly Tyler also co-star. FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE: Featuring some pretty grisly fare for its time, this low-budget shocker is an original piece of work that doesn't fail to entertain, despite its limited resources. Jonathan Drake (Eduard Franz) returns home to attend the funeral of his brother Kenneth (Paul Cavanagh). But at the service he is dismayed to discover that his brother's head has been stolen! Jonathan quickly realizes that the curse that killed his grandfather and father is still at work--and he himself is most likely the next victim. Lt. Jeff Rowan (Grant Richards) does some sleuthing, aided by Drake's attractive daughter (Valerie French), while an imposing Indian with sewn-shut lips menaces poor Jonathan at night.

Die Monster Die/The Dunwich Horror
DIE MONSTER DIE: Based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, Boris Karloff stars as the wheelchaired master of a strange old house in Arkham, England who acquires mysterious powers when he is zapped by a radioactive meteorite. His daughter (Suzan Farmer) is being courted by a young and bewildered American (Nick Adams), who ultimately must flee the premises from the monstrous patriarch. THE DUNWICH HORROR: Lurking in the quiet village of Dunwich, a supernatural horror lies in wait in this adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story. When a cute college coed (Sandra Dee) and her professor (Ed Begley) visit the library at the infamous Miskatonic University, they discover a young man (Dean Stockwell) who wishes to check out the dreaded Necronomicon. An ancient book for divining demons, the Necronomicon allows its user to bring hell to Earth, and human sacrifice is the required offering. Pretty young Sandra Dee is the creature's prey...
