X2 writers Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris apply their talents to the teen slasher genre, delivering a horrific update to the well-known legend of Bloody Mary. It's 1969 and Mary Banner is a bookish, unpopular girl who has unexpectedly been invited to the dance by a star athlete. His intentions are less than admirable, however, and after trying to escape from him Mary suffers a long and painful death. Years later in 2005, Sam (Kate Mara, TV's JACK & BOBBIE) and her girlfriends are having a slumber party on prom night, and while discussing urban legends and local lore, they invoke Mary's name and bring her back from the dead. This sets off a string of local murders, each executed according to the dictates of a different urban legend. Sam and her brother David (Robert Vito, SPY KIDS 3: GAME OVER) take it upon themselves to investigate, researching the original crime in an attempt to thwart the revenge the wronged spirit is determined to see through.

SAW: Be prepared to be scared. James Wan's directorial debut, written by and starring Leigh Whannell, is a violent, bloody, psychologically exhausting and exhilarating exercise in terror. Adam (Whannell) and Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) are chained in a vile, disgusting bathroom, separated by a bloody corpse holding a gun and a tape recorder. They are each given a saw--the only obvious way out is to cut one of their feet off. A serial killer who specializes in torturing morally bereft strangers is playing a game with them: Gordon has less than eight hours to kill Adam or else the doctor's wife (Monica Potter) and daughter (Mackenzie Vega) will be murdered. As the two men engage in a battle of wits, alternately trying to help each other and secretly attempting to win the game, a series of flashbacks reveals the history of the madman and the pair of detectives (Danny Glover and Ken Leung) handling the case. Some of the torture scenes are excruciatingly horrible and hard to watch, a real treat for fans of the genre. SAW II: Jigsaw is back for more gory fun in SAW II, but this time he comes out from behind the mask to terrorize a troubled cop face-to-face. Tobin Bell reprises his brief role as Jigsaw in the first film with a major starring turn in the sequel. Dying of cancer, Jigsaw lets himself get caught, only to show Detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) that his son, Daniel (Erik Knudsen), has been taken hostage with seven other people, all of whom have been placed in a house of horrors with only the slimmest chance of escaping with their lives. Jigsaw promises Matthews that Daniel will live only if the cop follows the rules of the game, but time is running out, as the captives' bodies have been poisoned with a toxin that will soon destroy them. Meanwhile, in the dank, mysterious, booby-trapped house, the ever-more-desperate group of people (including Shawnee Smith, who is back as Amanda, the lone survivor of SAW) furiously try to find their connection to each other and a way out, but blood and violence lie in their path. Like its predecessor, SAW II is a frightening thriller filled with plenty of tricks and treats to satisfy even the most jaded horror fan. SAW III: As SAW II concluded, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) was dying. But that doesn't mean his penchant for playing games of torture and violence is ending. In SAW III, the murders start occurring again, and Kerry (Dina Meyer) is back on the case, although she thinks this time it might be the work of a copycat. She's only partly right: Amanda (Shawnee Smith), the only victim to have survived both movies, has joined Jigsaw as his apprentice, leading the way through a terrifying game involving Lynn (Bahar Soomekh), a doctor in an unhappy marriage, and Jeff (Angus Macfadyen), a distraught man who is having trouble getting over the loss of his son (Stefan Georgiou) at the hands of a drunk driver. Amanda has captured Lynn and placed her in a neck brace that is linked to Jigsaw's heart monitor; she must keep Jigsaw alive or else the brace will explode. Meanwhile, Jeff is sent on a dangerous journey on which he faces all the people involved in the light penalty his boy's killer received--and it is up to him whether he will seek vengeance or offer forgiveness. Helmed by SAW II director Darren Lynn Bousman and written by original SAW screenwriter and star Leigh Whannell (with a story by Whannell and SAW director James Wan), SAW III is an intricately designed, gruesome thriller with a hard-driving soundtrack featuring songs by Slayer, Helmet, and All that Remains.

Veteran slashers Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees join forces in this combination sequel to the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FRIDAY THE 13TH series. The film begins with a quick recap of both Freddy and Jason's "lives," underscoring their respective motivations to kill and their distinct weaknesses. Freddy (Robert Englund) explains that the present children of Elm St. (including Monica Keena, Jason Ritter, Katherine Isabelle, and Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child) have no memory of him, and if they don't know he exists, he can't enter their dreams to kill them. Ingeniously, he reaches out to Jason (Ken Kirzinger), the brutish death machine from Camp Crystal Lake, to go on an Elm Street killing spree, hoping a lot of gory murder will jog the town's memory. Jason is up to the task, quickly dispensing with teenager after teenager in suburban homes, cornfields, medical labs and, of course, the forest. Freddy grows jealous over Jason's body count, and so must intervene, setting off a battle royale between the two highly adored slasher heroes across dreamworlds and realities. In another post-modern twist, a character seemingly modeled after Jay from Kevin Smith's films appears in the movie, adding both a comedic element and another level of reality vs. fiction. FREDDY VS. JASON employs a variety of special effects to update these undying series, not the least of which is uniting their once disparate stories.

Everyone's favorite plastic slasher doll, Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif), returns for a fifth installment of this popular horror series. Apparently Chucky and his equally murderous bride, Tiffany (voiced by Jennifer Tilly), had a child, which has grown up in a cage as part of a heavy-metal ventriloquist act in England. Eventually it (one never learns its exact gender) escapes to Los Angeles to revive mom and pop, whose doll corpses are being used for a movie based on their previous killing spree. Jennifer Tilly shows up as herself, and she's great--hamming it up as a floozy actress so desperate for the part in rapper Redman's latest film that she lures him home for a casting couch tryst, with hilarious (and fatal) results. Meanwhile, the child of Chucky is horrified by the violent murders its parents are so fond of committing and, with a little help from a 12-step book, tries to help them kick the homicide habit. Of course it's hard when there are so many deserving targets around, including John Waters as a scuzzy paparazzi. In sum, this is one crazy sequel; it's got a refreshing lack of morals, a light heart, and a clever script with a lot of great insider jokes for buffs. The gore is extreme though, including eviscerations, beheadings, melting flesh, and other raunchy business that makes its R rating well-earned (no true Chucky fan would have it any other way, of course). Rappers Eminem and Big Pun contributed tracks to the score.

Continuing on with its story despite the death of namesake killer Jigsaw in the third installment, SAW V concerns itself with detailing who will carry on with his bloody work. Director David Hackl, the production designer on the previous three films, retains their familiar charnel house look. Though there are fewer grisly death sequences, faithful viewers will enjoy the creative plot twists. The film opens with a man strapped to a table above a pendulum. As the sharp blade begins swinging over his stomach, he has only a minute to stop it by inserting his hands into a device that will crush them. When the machine malfunctions, it's clear that it wasn't the work of the meticulous Jigsaw. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson) continues the investigation he began in the previous film, only to wake up to find himself wearing a glass helmet filled with water. With a minimum of self-mutilation, he escapes and continues his investigation with the hunch that Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is somehow involved in the new rash of killings. Before long, a new group of strangers wakes up in Jigsaw's lair to face a series of brutal tests, and Jigsaw's ex-wife, Jill, is given a mysterious box at the execution of his will. An enormously popular and critic-proof series, SAW gives its fans what they want--creatively executed blood and guts. The fifth installment in as many years, SAW V is more subdued in that department, but the sequences it does contain deliver the goods. Several lengthy flashbacks also allow Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) to make a few appearances. While SAW V isn't the place for beginners to start, those who have stuck with the story this far will find it a fitting entry, happy that SAW VI is just around the bend.
