"Que Chido el Pasito Duranguense" (08/17/2004) International Various Artists, DisaAnyone who spends many years studying Spanish inevitably learns that Spanish, like English, has a wide variety of regional accents and regional slang. Salsa, merengue and bachata are full of local Caribbean slang that you would seldom hear in Spain, Argentina or Mexico, and similarly, regional Mexican music is full of slang expressions that are unique to Mexico and/or the southwestern United States. Chido is a Mexican expression that means fantastic, great or excellent; for example, "El concierto de Man  estar  bien chido" -- the Man  concert will be excellent. And when a compilation is titled Que Chido el Pasito Duranguense, it's safe to assume that the label is going after a regional Mexican audience (which, of course, is Disa Records' bread and butter). This CD's primary focus is the Durango school of Mexican music; the influence of Durango, Mexico prevails on horn-powered selections by Grupo Mont?z de Durango, Brazeros Musical de Durango, los Brujos de la Sierra, Coralillo, Metal de Durango, Alacranes Musical and others. Despite the use of horns, these Durango-style performances aren't quite the same as Sinaloa-style banda; however, fans of Sinaloan banda usually appreciate the horn music of Durango. And even though the Durango sound doesn't involve the same combination of instruments as norte?o/Tex-Mex, many of the artists on this CD share norte?o's polka influence. Los Hor¢scopos de Durango, for example, aren't a carbon copy of los Tigres del Norte any more than they're a carbon copy of la Banda el Recodo, but there are major parallels between los Hor¢scopos and those artists (just as there are major parallels between merengue and bachata). Que Chido el Pasito Duranguense isn't the last word on Durango's musical contributions, although it's an enjoyable disc that's well worth obtaining if one is exploring the Durango sound. ~ Alex Henderson

"Las Mas Bailables del Pasito Duranguense" (11/09/2004) International Various Artists, DisaThis rousing compilation brings together songs that can generally be classified as rancheras. Ranchera music is a sprightly Mexican folk song that often usually features accordion, flutes, horns, ruffling percussion, and tight-knit vocal harmonies. Ranchera music bears a striking resemblance to the hearty, carnivalesque sound of Central European and Balkan folk forms, yet the music is distinctly Mexican--and all the more so for ranchera's tradition of patriotic themes. The performers here are distinctive and varied, and include Los Brujos de la Sierra and Isabela (whose stirring diva stylings offer a nice reprieve in the male-dominated set list). In addition to rancheras, LAS MAS BAILABLES DEL PASITO DURANGUENSE also contains a number of cumbias. The cumbia, which originated in Columbia, is a high-octane dance form that incorporates Latin, European, and Caribbean influences. The percussion on the cumbias is more fleshed out than on the rancheras, and the overall feel is noticeably different ("La Ampolleta" by Los Horoscopos de Durango, for example, sounds like classic ska). LAS MAS BAILABLES DEL PASITO DURANGUENSE is a superb showcase for these thriving, traditional forms.
