"Y Seguimos con Duranguense" (03/01/2005) International Los Hor¢scopos de Durango, DisaLos Hor¢scopos de Durango: Marisol Terrazas, Vicky Terrazas (vocals). Duranguense, like Sinaloa-style banda, is a very male-dominated area of regional Mexican music. Of course, Mexican music on the whole is not male-dominated -- mariachi and ranchera have given listeners a long list of great female vocalists. But the vast majority of duranguense bands have had all-male lineups. So when the long-running Los Hor¢scopos de Durango were revamped and founder Armando Terrazas' daughters Vicky and Marisol -- two sisters with a fondness for micro-miniskirts and cowboy boots -- were placed right up front, the group really stood out. But the Vicky/Marisol lineup of Los Hor¢scopos isn't gimmicky or contrived; in fact, they have been responsible for some of the most creative, fresh-sounding duranguense of the 2000s -- and their creative winning streak continues with Y Seguimos con Duranguense. Los Hor¢scopos haven't been afraid to take chances on previous albums; their willingness to combine duranguense with Dominican bachata on their hit version of Monchy y Alexandra's "Dos Locos" in 2004 showed a very risk-taking spirit. And the Terrazas sisters aren't any less ambitious this time; during the course of the album, they apply the duranguense sound to everything from corridos ("La Ara?a" and "El Media Noche") to cumbia ("Y Yo Sigo Aqui") to the late Tejano star Selena's "Si la Quieres." There is plenty of ranchera-influenced material on this album, but Los Hor¢scopos' use of ranchera elements can vary from one song to the next; while "Anoche Estuve Llorando" favors the stereotypically melancholy ranchera ballad style, "Obsesion" manages to draw on ranchera and bachata simultaneously. But for all its diversity, Y Seguimos con Duranguense is always a duranguense album first and foremost -- and it will easily go down in history as one of the most interesting duranguense releases of 2005. ~ Alex Henderson The music of Los Horoscopos De Durango, with its sprightly waltz-time beats, is a cornucopia of Norteno delights, enhanced by the captivating vocal talents of Vicky and Marisol Terrazas. The women deliver songs both passionate and lighthearted over the band's pulsating synthesizer-and-brass accompaniment. Punctuated by signature lightning-fast percussion rolls, the songs of Los Horoscopos wind their way through a variety of originals and cover tunes, notably including a soulful take on the late Tejano icon Selena's "Si La Quieres," which pays homage to the memory of the departed star. Other highlights include the electrifying "Obsesion" and the equally energetic "Y Yo Sigue Aqui." On Y SEGUIMOS CON DURANGUENSE!!!, Los Horoscopos are all about fire and excitement, injecting every song with equal verve and flair, and conjuring a hot-blooded magic all their own.

(In fact, Duranguense bears a close kinship with the polka--the record even boasts the playful track "Polka La Chorreada.") Brazeros Musical open with the light touch of "Lagrimas y Lluvia," a romantic track edging on bolero, before launching into the party of "Quiero Saber de Ti." From there, the fun continues in "4 Meses" and "Juego de Amor." The group blends its balladeer traits with its partying side to perfection on "Carta a Mi Madre," and slows things down on the heartbreaking "Adios, Adios Amor." Brazeros Musical de Durango have earned their following in the Mexican music scene, and EL GRUPO JOVEN should only cement that position.

"Las Mas Bailables del Pasito Duranguense" (11/09/2004) International Various Artists, DisaThis rousing compilation brings together songs that can generally be classified as rancheras. Ranchera music is a sprightly Mexican folk song that often usually features accordion, flutes, horns, ruffling percussion, and tight-knit vocal harmonies. Ranchera music bears a striking resemblance to the hearty, carnivalesque sound of Central European and Balkan folk forms, yet the music is distinctly Mexican--and all the more so for ranchera's tradition of patriotic themes. The performers here are distinctive and varied, and include Los Brujos de la Sierra and Isabela (whose stirring diva stylings offer a nice reprieve in the male-dominated set list). In addition to rancheras, LAS MAS BAILABLES DEL PASITO DURANGUENSE also contains a number of cumbias. The cumbia, which originated in Columbia, is a high-octane dance form that incorporates Latin, European, and Caribbean influences. The percussion on the cumbias is more fleshed out than on the rancheras, and the overall feel is noticeably different ("La Ampolleta" by Los Horoscopos de Durango, for example, sounds like classic ska). LAS MAS BAILABLES DEL PASITO DURANGUENSE is a superb showcase for these thriving, traditional forms.
