"Lagrimas Negras [Digipak]" (06/22/2004) International Bebo & Cigala, RCA Records (USA)Bebo & Cigala: Bebo Vald?s, Diego el Cigala. Personnel: Bebo Vald?s (vocals, piano); Diego el Cigala (vocals); Ni?o Josele, El Nino Josele (guitar); Paquito d'Rivera (alto saxophone); Javier Colina (double bass, bass guitar); Changuito (timbales); Israel "Pira?a" Porrina, Rickard Vald?s, Pancho Terry (percussion); Milton Cardona, Puntilla Orlando Rios, Pedrito Matinez (background vocals); Caetano Veloso (vocals); Federico Britos (violin); Tata G?ines (congas). Audio Mixer: Pepe Loeches. Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY; Musicgrama Studio, Madrid, Spain; Musicquina, Madrid, Spain; The Hit Factory, Miami, FL. L grimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Vald?s and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Vald?s (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Mor?, writing early charts for him. Vald?s is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that meld together cooking son, jazz, Afro-Caribbean, and flamenco rhythms, in tunes by composers such as Lolita de la Colina, Virgilio and Homero Exp¢sito, Ram¢n Perell¢, the grand team of Tom Jobim and Vin¡cius de Moraes, Caetano Veloso (who makes a guest appearance), Maria Teresa Vera, Miguel Matamoros (who composed the title track), and others. Most are Cuban ballads. Guests such as Veloso, Paquito D'Rivera, Pancho Terry, Tata G?ines, and El Ni?o Josele fall by on different tracks. And while the tunes are top-shelf and the guests make this a very special and historic occasion, it is the unusual dynamic and the integrity with which it is employed that makes this set so unique. Vald?s' style is an elegant one; his rhythmic left hand accents rhythms and shifts them effortlessly, adding street and nuance here, space and tension there. Always his notes are sure, precise, and solid. El Cigala's voice is a true cantador's; he wavers, lilts, growls, and gutturally moans; he slips between rhythms and melodies, underscoring first one and then another, using the rhythms to sing counterpoint to the piano's stridency and sheer graceful approach in the ballads, shouting assent and further challenges on the uptempo sons. Together, the combination is its own moving poetry, meeting in the middle of a tradition as old as flamenco's "cante jondo" and as integrated as Cuba's. The sacred and profane dine and drink together and no one will say which is which. All nine songs offer differing emphases on lyric and rhythm, all offer variant harmonic concerns, but they all contain the spirit of the "duende." While there isn't a mediocre second on this album and all of the performances are breathtaking, "L grimas Negras" and "Coraz¢n Loco" are clear standouts. This is destined to be a classic, and hopefully a gateway to more experiments like this one. ~ Thom Jurek

"1100 Bel Air Place [Remaster]" (2006) International Iglesias, Julio, Columbia (USA)Personnel includes: Julio Iglesias, Diana Ross, Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys (vocals); Michael Landau, David Williams, Paul M. Jackson Jr., George Doering (guitar); Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, Larry Hall, Chuck Findley, Charles Davis (trumpets); Richard Todd (French horns); Les Benedict, Bill Reichenbach (trombones); David Foster, Greg Phillinganes, James Newton Howard, Rafael Ferro, John Barnes, John Van Tongeren, Steve Mitchell, Nicky Hopkins, Michael Boddicker (keyboards, organs, synthesizers); Abe Laboriel, Nathan East (bass); Carlos Vega (drums); Paulinho Da Costa, Luis Conte (percussion). Engineers: Humberto Gatica, Terry Christian. Personnel: Julio Iglesias (vocals); The Beach Boys, Willie Nelson, Diana Ross (vocals); Michael Landau, Paul Jackson, Jr. , David E. Williams (guitars); Gerald Vinci, Assa Drori (violin); Dave Schwartz, Allan Harshman (viola); Stan Getz (saxophone); Gary Grant, Jerry Hey (trumpet, brass); Richard Todd, Brad Warnaar (French horn); Charles Loper, Lew McCreary (trombone); Michel Colombier, Robbie Buchanan, Randy Kerber (Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Abe Laboriel, Jr., Mike Porcaro, Nathan East (bass guitar); Carlos Vega (drums); Luis Conte, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Richard Page, Steven George, Tom Kelly (background vocals). By 1984, Julio Iglesias was the biggest star in Latin music, but he was still pretty much unknown to mainstream American audiences. Much as they would with Ricky Martin a generation later, Columbia broke Iglesias, at least temporarily, with a concerted promotional effort. Unlike the music of Martin (and Iglesias's own son Enrique), 1100 BEL AIR PLACE largely downplays Latin influences in favor of a north-of-the-border blend of easy listening and MOR pop. Bracketed by a pair of duets--with Diana Ross on a flirty version of Cole Porter's "All of You" and Willie Nelson on the immediately epochal "To All the Girls I've Loved Before"--most of 1100 BEL AIR PLACE consists of smooth pop songs co-written by producer Albert Hammond (himself the father of a next-generation pop star, the Strokes' lead guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.) and featuring ultra-slick semi-orchestral arrangements. After this commercial bid, Iglesias returned to his Latin crooner roots, welcomed back by his core audience, augmented by a few new fans.

"Bagpipes of Greece" (2005) International Various Artists, Topic RecordsFirst, a warning: you have to like bagpipes to enjoy this record. It's an international instrument with many flavors -- although you have to wonder how the idea of inflating bladders ever occurred to people around the world. This exploration of Greek bagpipes is comprised of field recordings made by Wolf Dietrich. He toured the Greek mainland and the islands that dot the Adriatic and Mediterranean to fill in a complete picture -- and it's an interesting one, too. There's a very Balkan feel to the tracks recorded in the north, with a hardness that can be off-putting. On the islands, however, the music has a sweeter tone, in keeping with the lifestyle. All in all, it forms an interesting but scholarly picture of the bagpipes in Greece. Not for everyone, indeed, but fans of the pipes will love every note. ~ Chris Nickson

"Soliloquy: Ka Leo O Loko" (01/08/2002) International Beamer, Keola, Windham HillSolo performer: Keola Beamer (acoustic guitar). Engineers include: Howard Johnston, Justin Lieberman, Mark Slagle. Includes liner notes by Corrina Burnley. Personnel: Keola Beamer (guitar); George Winston (guitar). Liner Note Authors: Corrina Burnley; George Winston. Photographer: Matthew Thayer. Keola Beamer is a master of the slack key guitar, a standard acoustic guitar with the strings tuned lower--literally slackened--to create a sound unique to Hawaiian music. The slack key guitar's history goes back to the early 1800s, and its lazy, resonant picking can be heard in most traditional island music. Beamer is descended from a distinguished musical family and has proven his mastery of early Hawaiian music on many of his previous albums, including the classic 1973 album, HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITAR IN THE REAL OLD STYLE. On SOLILOQUY: KA LEO O LOKO, Beamer performs solo on 15 instrumentals that exemplify the slack key style. "Kapaula Bay" is a beautiful track that evokes island sunsets and quiet nights. "Na Hala O Naue" is a duet between Beamer and co-producer George Winston, who is best known for his best-selling piano recordings. Winston plays the steel string guitar on this track and the interplay between these two old friends and musical masters is playful and heartfelt. Beamer is also a respected teacher and many of these songs can be found in his instruction books. The liner notes feature the tunings and chord progressions for each track and resources for those interested in learning to play in Beamer's style.

"Everything Is Possible: The Best of Os Mutantes" (02/01/2006) International Os Mutantes, Luaka BopOs Mutantes: Arnaldo Baptista, Rita Lee Jones, Sergio Dias. Compilation producers: David Byrne, Beco Dranoff. Includes liner notes by Carlos Calado. Os Mutantes: Sergio Dias, Arnaldo Baptista, Rita Lee Jones. Personnel: Rapheal Vilardi, Jorge Ben (vocals, guitar); Liminha (guitar); Ronaldo Leme, Dirceu (drums); Nana Asconcelos (percussion); Manoel Barenbein (programming). Photographers: Jean Solari; Cynira Arruda. Translators: Roberto "Beco" Dranoff; Alex Ladd; Sara Sproles. Unknown Contributor Roles: Sergio Dias; Rita Lee. Arranger: Rogerio Duprat. To listen to this collection is to know that in the '60s, ground zero for "pure pop genius" was not only located in England or the U.S., but in turbulent, bubbling Brazil. This collection presents the very cream of the crazy cream of Os Mutantes, with 14 tracks hand-picked by Beco Dranoff and David Byrne. While these brilliant, psychedelic recordings are best appreciated in the context of the three albums from which they are mostly culled, the music found here offers a wonderful glimpse of the dynamic pop magic that was Os Mutantes. There's the purple-hazed crawl of "Dia 36," with Baptista-brand wobbled vocals and bizarre, inverted wah-wah acoustic guitar. There are two versions of the lovely gem "Baby," the 1968 version lulling along to the sound of reverb-vibrato guitar and toy organ while that of 1971 softens a bit, with Jobim-esque nylon-string guitar and piano rolling out a bossa nova rhythm for Rita Lee's English cooing. Fuzz-guitar joyride "A Minha Menina" is simply the definition of "groovy." "Ave, Lucifer" is a shadowy little ode to the devil, with a dire melody and fanfares of horns and strings. This is genius pop that straddles the fence between sincerity and irony with relish.
