"La Banda del Carro Rojo [CD/DVD]" (08/01/2006) International Original Soundtrack, FonovisaCorridos (Mexican folk narratives) existed long before los Tigres del Norte's formation in the late '60s, but los Tigres played a seminal role in the rise of a certain type of corrido: the narcocorrido, which describes the dangerous, violent and tragic world of narcotraficantes (drug smugglers). Los Tigres wrote the book on narcocorridos, helping to pave the way for everyone from Grupo Exterminador to los Tucanes de Tijuana to the late Chalino S nchez. And narcocorridos are a major priority on La Banda del Carro Rojo, a best-of that Fonovisa assembled in 2006. This release is hardly the only Tigres best-of that Fonovisa has put together; there have been quite a few others. But La Banda del Carro Rojo will be especially interesting to those who associate los Tigres with narcocorridos, which is not to say that all of the selections fall into that category. One of the most famous non-narcocorrido tracks is "La Jaula de Oro," which was covered by Latin pop/rock en espa?ol star Julieta Venegas (in an intriguingly non-norte?o fashion) and is a poignant account of a frustrated Mexican immigrant who has been working in the U.S. for ten years but still hasn't been granted citizenship. And "Tres Veces Mojado" is about a Salvadoran man who -- in the process of gradually making his way from El Salvador to Arizona -- has been an indocumentado (undocumented worker) in Guatemala, Mexico and the United States. But narcocorridos dominate La Banda del Carro Rojo, which -- unlike all the Tigres best-ofs that have focused on their '90s and 2000s output exclusively -- also boasts some of their groundbreaking narcocorridos of the early '70s such as the title track and "Contrabando y Traici¢n" ("Contraband and Betrayal"). Some musicologists have compared narcocorridos to gangsta rap, although the outlaw country tradition of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Paycheck and Merle Haggard is an equally valid comparison -- and whatever comparisons one prefers, La Banda del Carro Rojo is full of gems that are essential listening for narcocorrido enthusiasts. ~ Alex Henderson

"Pacto de Sangre" (03/30/2004) International Los Tigres del Norte, FonovisaRecorded at the Annex Recording Studios, Menlo, California. This special edition includes a bonus DVD which includes music videos for "Jose Perez Leon" and "No Tiene La Culpa El Indio." Recorded at the Annex Recording Studios, Menlo, California. The grand old men of Norteno music have been around since the mid-1960s, but you'd never know it from this energetic set of expertly played and performed songs, which ranges from the irresistibly danceable "No Tiene La Culpa El Indio" to the soulful "Vales La Pena." There's an up-to-date quality to the cumbia rhythms of "Cumbia Guarija" that shows Los Tigres haven't lost their ear for newer sounds or their appeal to a contemporary audience. The two-step reigns supreme throughout PACTO DE SANGRE, from the deceptively upbeat "Liar, Liar" to "Las Mujeres De Juarez" with its rundown of those women's particular virtues, and it's Los Tigres' particular strength that they vary its presentation so much that each song feels like a reinvention.

"Herencia de Familia" (12/31/2002) International Los Tigres del Norte, FonovisaLos Tigres Del Norte: Eduardo Hernandez, Jorge Hernandez, Hernan Hernandez, Luiz Hernandez, Luis Hernandez, Oscar Lara, Lupe Olvido. Additional personnel: Danny Descalzo (percussion). Recorded at Music Annex Studios, Menlo Park & The Breathing Room, San Anselmo, California. HERENCIA DE FAMILIA was nominated for the 2000 Billboard Latin Music Award for Album of the Year by a Male Group and "Lagrimas" won for Regional Mexican Track of the Year. HERENCIA DE FAMILIA won the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Norteno Performance. Los Tigres del Norte, by this point in their career, were larger than life. Although they worked very much in the mold of commercial country music -- most of their songs written by outsiders, shameless TV promotion, lavish packaging -- the edgy quality of Los Tigres' material and their innovative use of sound effects placed them on a remote summit of folk respectability, other norte?o musicians' reputations hopelessly pedestrian in comparison. They are, to Mexican music, what Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson are to American music, although the analogy is not perfect: first, because Los Tigres are very much a band; and second, because Los Tigres have always sounded the way they sound, and have not really deviated from their formula. Imagine Johnny Cash's Sun output merging seamlessly into American Recordings and you will get an idea of Los Tigres' legacy. This is not to say that they don't experiment. On Herencia de Familia they even include a song in English (it's terrible) and one in "Spanglish" (possibly a sort of gesture to their growing gringo audience). On earlier records, Los Tigres had dabbled in rock, and actually throughout the '90s and into the new millennium had endowed each new release with a kind of epic grandeur, reminiscent of how rock music is packaged and programmed. Herencia de Familia is typical of this string of releases. It's a double-CD package (although its actual contents could fit on a single disc with room to spare -- the commercial standard in Mexico is 30 minutes per CD). Its initial brief soliloquy and tiger roar are followed by an ode to political cynicism. The next song is a radio-friendly romantic ballad with a catchy accordion hook and a soft rock drumbeat. A couple of songs later, they are begging Jesus to come and end what surely must be tribulation, then lurching into an uproarious and hilariously facile tribute to Las Vegas. The second disc starts at the same energy level as the first, then gradually peters out until listeners are left with a blatantly filler version of "Alla in el Rancho Grande." This is way beyond what you should expect from a typical norte?o release. And in fact, one would be hard-pressed to recall a group exploring the political and psychological Zeitgeist of Mexico the way Los Tigres (or at least their songwriters) do. This is how rock audiences are wooed, and it makes Los Tigres the most attractive of the norte?o bands for non-Mexicans. It's hard to evaluate Herencia in comparison to other Los Tigres disks, simply because Los Tigres were so consistent during this period. But no one who picks it up, regardless of background, will be disappointed. ~ J. Chandler

"Directo al Corazon" (03/29/2005) International Los Tigres del Norte, FonovisaPersonnel: Walter Romero (accordion). Recording information: The Annex, Menlo Park, CA. Photographer: Christian Besson. Arrangers: Hern n Hern ndez; Jorg? Hern ndez; Oscar Lara; Luis Hern ndez. Los Tigres del Norte are truly one of the leading lights of Norteno music. With its distinctive sound, dominated by accordion and bajo sexto, Norteno is a traditional form from the Mexican working class that often focuses on the hardships of rural life, yet always has a lightness and buoyancy that colors its bright, danceable rhythms. Though Los Tigres are based in Texas, they sing about Mexican-American life and romance with this same sense of fun and good-time attitude. DIRECTO AL CORAZON finds Los Tigres in typically fine form, with plenty of vibrant, driving numbers mixed alongside slower, cry-in-your-beer ballads. Lush, emotive singing is at the center of all of these songs, with strong vocal leads fleshed out by tight-knit, multi-part harmonies. The immediately appealing traditional flavor of DIRECTO AL CORAZON is the perfect antidote to much of the glossy Latin pop dominating the charts.

"Uniendo Fronteras" (12/31/2002) International Los Tigres del Norte, FonovisaLos Tigres Del Norte: Jorge Hernandez, Hernan Hernandez, Eduardo Hernandez, Luis Herandez, Oscar Lara. Tex-Mex sensations Los Tigres Del Norte have been plying their brand of Norteno music for decades, and UNIENDO FRONTERAS shows no dip whatsoever in quality. If anything, the group's sound seems to have gained in character as the members have grown in age. Far from the crossover manque gaffes of so many Tex-Mex pop groups who employ synthesizers and drum machines that sounded out of date 15 years ago, Los Tigres stick to the real thing. Most of the tracks here are pure, stripped-down conjunto, led by a billowing accordion and galvanized by rhythmic guitar and simple drums. There's nothing extra added to the production beyond what's needed to get the songs across. From the traditional two-step conjunto sound of "Trabajo Por Mi Cuenta" and "Somos Mas Americanos" to the tantalizingly slow waltz "Y Dices Que Tu Me Amas," Los Tigres display an uncommon mastery of their style, led by heartfelt vocals and concise arrangements that make UNIENDO FRONTERAS an unpretentious joy to hear.

"De Paisano A Paisano" (12/31/2002) International Los Tigres del Norte, FonovisaDE PAISANO A PAISANO includes original mural artwork and liner notes by Paul J. Botello. Personnel includes: Danny Descalzo (percussion). Recorded at Music Annex Studios, Menlo Park, California and Breathing Room, San Anselmo, California. DE PAISANO A PAISANO was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Norteno Album. "De Paisano A Paisano" was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Album. Los Tigres Del Norte are one of the most respected groups in all of Norteno music. They've been at it since the '60s, racking up Grammys and record sales in unprecedented amounts for a group of their genre. As DE PAISANO makes clear, one of the main reasons for Los Tigres' consistent success is that they keep it simple. Throughout the album, they stick close to their Tex-Mex roots. Accordion, guitar, and emotive vocals are at the heart of their sound. There are no hip electronic enhancements added to their sound, no crossover pop moves like a string section or rock-flavored guitar. Instead, Los Tigres continue to do what they do best on DE PAISANO, and the Norteno audience should be grateful for that fact.

"Herencia Musical: 20 Norte?as Famosas" (10/05/2004) International Los Tigres del Norte, FonovisaThis 2004 set of well-known tunes from the legendary Norteno combo Los Tigres del Norte is filled with the kind of songs that this band has built its reputation on for more than three decades. Some of these songs convey of a sense of longing, while others celebrate the working life of Mexican immigrants in the United States, and others are romantic ballads performed in the band's own inimitable style. The collection 20 NORTENAS FAMOSAS leads off with the jaunty "La Jaula de Oro," which boasts a sprightly beat, and quickly segues into the waltz time of "Pro Que Me Quite del Vicio." The regret-laden "Asomate a Mi Copa" is a down-tempo highlight, while "El Nino y la Boda" tells its tale to a familiar Norteno rhythm. "Corridos Prohibidos" (12/31/2002) International Los Tigres del Norte, FonovisaCorrido themes have changed with the times, but the popular Mexican ballad's function has remained the same: recounting events, from the seemingly mundane to the historically significant. Corridos have portrayed the exploits of border heroes like Gregorio Cortez, leaders of the Mexican Revolution, Chiapas rebels, racehorses, Osama bin Laden, and even Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. Focused on drug trafficking in Mexico, the narcocorrido has emerged as a popular subgenre, with los Tigres del Norte among its pioneers. Although los Tigres weren't the first to sing narcocorridos (and corridos about smuggling date back to the 19th century), their 1972 record "Contrabando y Traici¢n" was a pivotal release that inspired countless chroniclers of the badass narco lifestyle. Corridos Prohibidos contained some of their most memorable narco-themed songs and was one of their biggest hits. These bouncy, accordion-driven polkas might sound tame to non-Spanish speakers, but Jorge Hern ndez sings about gunfights with the police, treachery, retribution, and violent machismo. With its narrative enhanced by innovative (for the genre) sound effects, "La Camioneta Gris" tells of a drug-running couple's flight from los federales and their death under a train. "El Zorro de Ojinaga" concerns Pablo Acosta, who, in addition to funding hospitals and helping the poor, supplied one third of U.S. cocaine in the '80s and died in an FBI-assisted bust. While los Tigres depict modern outlaws, they also provide a sobering account of their legacy: "La Mafia Muere" paints a grim picture of Sinaloa after years of drug-related violence. Indeed, los Tigres have long displayed a social conscience; that's clearest here on "El Gato F?lix," a corrido eulogizing H?ctor F?lix Miranda, the murdered Tijuana journalist renowned for denouncing corruption. Los Tigres' narcocorridos aren't as graphic as those of some of their followers, but Corridos Prohibidos shows why they're considered architects of the genre. ~ Wilson Neate
