Alone in Iz World by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (CD - 09/25/2001)
"Alone in Iz World" (09/25/2001) International IZ Kamakawiwo'ole, Israel, BigBoy Records (Hawaii)This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Contains an untitled hidden track after "In This Life." Personnel includes: Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (vocals, ukulele); Mel Amina, Barry Flanagan (guitar). Recorded in Hawaii. Includes liner notes by Jon De Mello. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes. While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on the uke) and more fully arranged tunes enhanced after the singer's death. Whether crooning in his native tongue or in English, Iz cuts right through to the heart of the listener with his pure, emotive tone.
The music surrounds you like water in a pool. Iz floats you away in a warm, soft and cheerful style. The tunes we know are fun to hear anew and the others dreamily delight you. They touch your heart.
Getz/Gilberto [Remaster] by Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto (CD - 05/20/1997)
"Getz/Gilberto [Remaster]" (05/20/1997) International Getz, Stan, Verve (USA)The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Stan Getz. Jobim plays guitar and piano; Getz provides remarkably lyrical, complementary lead lines, and Joao Gilberto plays and sings in Portuguese with the most understated, romantic, and artful vocal delivery imaginable. It's a hard combination to beat. Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, and the versions here are definitive. Getz's sensitive playing blends seamlessly with the deceptively casual rhythmic sophistication of Jobim, Gilberto, and percussionist Milton Banana. The material, the musicianship, and the gentle, minimal arrangements and production ensure that GETZ/GILBERTO will never date, age, or tire. It's a perfect album.

Principal Cast: Tsidii Le Loka (Rafiki); Samuel E. Wright (Mufasa); Gina Breedlove (Sarabi); Geoff Hoyle (Zazu); John Vickery (Scar); Scott Irby-Ranniar (Young Simba); Kajuana Shuford (Young Nala); Tracy Nicole Chapman (Shenzi); Stanley Wayne Mathis (Banzai); Kevin Cahoon (Ed); Max Casella (Timon); Tom Alan Robbins (Pumbaa); Jason Raize (Simba); Heather Headley (Nala). Producers: Mark Mancina, Lebo M, Jay Rifkin. Recorded at Sony Music Studios, New York, New York. LION KING director Julie Taymor notes that "the South African-style chorus led by Lebo M has become a principal character" in the stage version of Disney's unforgettable story. This chorus, as well as African rhythms, chants, and Zulu dialects are made an essential part of the score, rather than being a mere background as they were in the film version. Expertly intermingled with this specifically African sound are the new comedic songs written by Elton John and Tim Rice, such as "Chow Down," the evil hyena's rock opera theme song; and Zazu the hornbill's wacky "The Morning Report." Beloved songs from the film, including "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Hakuna Matata" are here as well, as are new standouts like the lovely, haunting "They Live in You," written by Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and Lebo M.
Canyon Trilogy
"Canyon Trilogy" (03/04/1993) International Nakai, R. Carlos, Canyon RecordsR. Carlos Nakai is lauded in New Age circles for his ability to create enchanting mental images of tranquility and nature in repose. The flute compositions sound like the aural embodiment of Big Sky Western landscapes. With "Dreamscapes: Cleft in the Sky," he seems to revel in the inner stillness created by the drama of nature. Nakai also tries to connect with the past. In "Dawn's Mirage: Echoes of Time" and "Dawn's Mirage: Ancestral Vision," he summons old ghosts and strains to hear them sing once again.
