"Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas [Bonus Tracks]" (10/29/2002) Jazz Instrument Fitzgerald, Ella, Verve (USA)Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Frank DeVol And His Orchestra. Recorded at Columbia Recording Studios, New York on July 15 & 16, 1960 and Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California on August 5, 1960. Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals). Liner Note Author: Will Friedwald. Recording information: Columbia Recording Studios, New York, NY (09/03/1959-08/05/1960); Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA (09/03/1959-08/05/1960); United Recorders, Hollywood, CA (09/03/1959-08/05/1960). Editor: Peter Pullman. Arranger: Frank de Vol. ELLA FITZGERALD WISHES YOU A SWINGING CHRISTMAS is a charming, warmly humorous--and yes, swinging--set of classic Christmas tunes. The program is familiar, from bouncy singalongs like "Jingle Bells" to slinky ballads like a downright sexy "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," but Fitzgerald treats each song with exactly as much respect as it deserves. And so Frank Loesser's "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" is wistfully romantic and Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne's "Let It Snow" is kittenishly enticing. As always, Norman Granz's production avoids the schlock that drowns some holiday sets. This is as good as jazz Christmas albums get. This is a delightful Christmas jazz reissue featuring Ella Fitzgerald in prime form. On most selections she is backed by Frank DeVol's orchestra. The original dozen selections have been expanded with the addition of three alternate takes plus three selections only out previously on samplers, including "Christmas Island." Fitzgerald clearly had a fun time recording such songs as "Jingle Bells," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," and "Frosty the Snowman," along with a few more serious pieces. These concise performances (all under four minutes) are charming, making this one of the better Christmas jazz sets. ~ Scott Yanow

"Sound of Christmas [Digipak] [Remaster]" (11/02/2004) Jazz Instrument Lewis, Ramsey, Verve (USA)Ramsey Lewis Trio: Ramsey Lewis (piano); Eldee Young (double bass); Redd Holt (drums). Additional personnel: Sol Bobrou, David Chausow, Leonard Chausow, Oscar Chausow, Karl Fruh, Irving Kaplan, Harold E. Kupper, Abe Meltzer, Emil Podsada, Theodore Silavin (strings). This is a pleasing, if rather brief (29 minutes) Christmas jazz album that was originally quite popular. Reissued on a 1982 LP, the set features the Ramsey Lewis Trio (consisting of the leader/pianist, bassist Eldee Young, and drummer Red Holt) on ten Christmas songs, five of which add a string section arranged by Riley Hampton. The renditions of such tunes as "Winter Wonderland," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Sleigh Ride," and Lewis' "Christmas Blues" are fun and melodic, if not all that unique. ~ Scott Yanow

"A Smooth Jazz Christmas" (09/01/2003) Jazz Instrument Koz, Dave, Capitol/EMI RecordsPersonnel includes: Dave Koz (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones); Brenda Russell, Kenny Loggins (vocals); Rick Braun (trumpet, flugelhorn); Peter White (accordion, acoustic guitar); David Benoit (piano). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California. A SMOOTH JAZZ CHRISTMAS was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. Accompanied by some famous friends, mellow saxophonist Dave Koz delivers, as this album's title promises, holiday standards with a smooth jazz style. If you're the type that likes to nuzzle up with the likes of Kenny G or Lee Ritenour at Christmastime, then the soft sounds of Koz and his cohorts will be just what Santa ordered. In addition to the instrumental might of Koz and keyboardist David Benoit (a smooth jazz icon in his own right), there are the vocal talents of Brenda Russell and longtime pop sensation Kenny Loggins, who add another level to the lite jazz sounds, fleshing things out a bit more than one might expect.

"Christmas '64 [2005]" (10/25/2005) Jazz Instrument Smith, Jimmy (Organ), Verve (USA)Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Kenny Burrell, Quentin Warren (guitar); Margaret Ross (harp); Ernie Royal (trumpet); Joe Newman (flugelhorn); Jim Buffington (French horn); Jimmy Cleveland (trombone); Harvey Phillips (tuba); Art Davis (double bass); Grady Tate, Billy Hart (drums); George Devens (percussion). The master of the Hammond B-3 tickles the keys in full holiday mode on CHRISTMAS '64. While not nearly as gritty as BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK or THE SERMON, this seasonal platter finds Jimmy Smith lending his swirling, steamy organ sound to renditions of, among other favorites, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." Compared to most Christmas albums, this is plenty groovy, with lots of Smith's trademark dexterity and bop runs on offer.

"Have Yourself a Jazzy Little Christmas [Verve]" (07/26/1989) Jazz Instrument Various Artists, Verve (USA)This 15-track CD has something for everyone: the smooth vocal styling of Billy Eckstine on "Christmas Eve," and the purring Dinah Washington on the seductive "Ole Santa," and Ella Fitzgerald showing her soft and sentimental side on the single, "The Secret of Christmas." Billie Holiday, with help from Benny Carter and Sweets Edison, warms up the punch bowl with "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," while Sister Rosetta Tharpe raises the rafters on her powerful rendition of "O Little Town of Bethlehem." Jimmy Smith and his funky Hammond B3 invigorate "Jingle Bells," adding tympani and horns, he totally reinvents "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." ~ Dennis MacDonald

"Swingin' Christmas Party [RCA]" (09/01/2003) Jazz Instrument Various Artists, RCA Records (USA)All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Fats Waller (vocals, piano); Cliff Weston, George Rock, Edythe Wright, Ford Leary, Johnny B. Ryan, Kaye Choir, Joe Harris , Merv Griffin, Tex Beneke, The Modernaires, Norton Sisters, Vaughn Monroe (vocals). Arrangers: Guy Lombardo; Bill Finegan. Traditional European Yuletide music existed centuries before the advent of recording technology, and 21st century listeners will never have a chance to hear European singers and musicians of the 16th or 17th centuries performing the Christmas carols of their time. But American Christmas pop songs from the 20th century are another matter. Standards like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" and Mel Torm?'s "The Christmas Song" were written at a time when millions of people owned record players, and 21st century listeners who want to hear what Christmas music sounded like 50, 60, or 70 years ago need only visit their local CD store. The focus of Swingin' Christmas Party is swing and traditional pre-rock pop artists performing Christmas pop standards, and the recordings (all of them from RCA's vaults) date back to the '30s, '40s, and '50s. European carols like "Silent Night" and "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentleman" are not a priority; instead, one hears American Christmas pop standards being interpreted by the likes of Tommy Dorsey ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), Glenn Miller ("Jingle Bells"), and Sammy Kaye ("White Christmas"). Most of the recordings on Swingin' Christmas Party do, in fact, swing, which doesn't mean that all of them are jazz per se. For example, Guy Lombardo's sweet band (which is heard on the New Year's Eve favorite "Auld Lang Syne") was essentially a pop unit. But Lombardo, Vaughn Monroe, and other traditional pop artists on this disc were certainly influenced by jazz, so they work well alongside improvisers such as Fats Waller and Benny Goodman. Regrettably, RCA fails to provide recording dates, but even so, Swingin' Christmas Party is an enjoyable compilation that is recommended to anyone who wants to hear what Christmas music sounded like in the '30s, '40s, and '50s. ~ Alex Henderson

Audio Mixer: Hank Cicalo. Liner Note Author: Doc Severinsen. Recording information: Group IV Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA. Director: Rebecca Thompson. Arrangers: Julia Winterberg; John Bambridge; Tommy Newsom. Like Doc himself, Merry Christmas from Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Orchestra is a brassy, stylish, and shamelessly enjoyable album. Severinsen never takes risks -- the swaggering arrangements will be familiar to anyone who watched Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, and all the songs are staples -- but he's made an entertaining album. He's not alone on this one either -- the L.A. Children's Chorus, the Philharmonic Strings, and the Desert Bells help out on individual tracks. When all is said and done, there might not be much unexpected here, but it's all quite fun. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine This is The Tonight Show band's treatment

"Christmas Carols for Solo Guitar [Remaster]" (10/04/2005) Jazz Instrument Byrd, Charlie, DRG (USA)Personnel: Charlie Byrd (guitar). Christmas Carols for Solo Guitar is a lovely, understated collection that's not only ideal as low-key holiday music, but it's also a good showcase for Byrd's interpretive talents. He doesn't necessarily reinvent these songs, but his tasteful, elegant readings of "O Holy Night," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "Joy to the World," "What Child Is This? (Greensleeves)," "The First Noel" and "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" are certainly individual. Holiday music is rarely this graceful; for fans of pretty instrumentals and accomplished guitar playing, this is a perfect Christmas record. ~ Robert Lovering
