This CD contains the original LP of the same name plus two previously unissued songs ("Very Good Advice" and "So This Is Love"). Inspired by a trip with his family to Disneyland, Dave Brubeck recorded eight songs taken from four Disney movies (Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, Snow White and Cinderella), including such melodies as "Give a Little Whistle," "Heigh Ho," "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "Someday My Prince Will Come." The funny part is that all of these songs were already in the Brubeck Quartet's repertoire. The results are pleasing although, due to a misprint, the CD booklet only contains half of the original liner notes. ~ Scott Yanow

"Gerson Swings Disney" (06/26/2001) Jazz Instrument Gerson, Roy, Original Cast (Label)Joined by a pantheon of illustrious jazz artists, pianist Roy Gerson pours life into an agenda of songs culled from a variety of movies released by the Walt Disney Studio. A native of Long Island, Gerson has dabbled in films in addition to his jazz career. He has played gigs at top night spots and was the pianist for the Widespread Depression Orchestra, which made some noise during the 1970s and 1980s. While there is an impressive list of people joining Gerson, most make cameo appearances, leaving the pianist to carry the major load. But oh what cameos. Rosemary Clooney does one of the more enduring Disney songs, "When You Wish Upon a Star," singing the rarely heard verse. The Pizzarelli family enlivens four cuts; of particular note is Bucky Pizzarelli's playing rhythm as Gerson goes down and dirty on "It's a Small World." That's what makes this album so engaging -- Gerson's ability to take some good and some run-of-the-mill tunes and make something out of them. The "Mickey Mouse March" gets two looks, as a swinging, heavy on the left-hand boogie-woogie, and then a full run-through of styles from ragtime to solemn. One of the album's special events is a vocal/ensemble of "Got No Strings," with John Pizzarelli on the vocals doing the Slam Stewart thing by singing into his guitar. Randy Sandke and Ken Peplowski join in for a bit of Dixieland along the way. Gerson is a two-fisted piano player using the whole keyboard and, with help from his friends, shows just how many ways the music from Walt Disney films can be jazzed up without making them sound contrived. This is a fun album and is recommended. ~ Dave Nathan

"Second Star to the Right: Salute to Walt Disney" (09/14/1999) Jazz Instrument Ra, Sun, Leo Records (Jazz) - (Import)Recorded in Austria in 1989. Sun Ra and his Intergalaxtic Arkestra's Second Star to the Right: Salute to Walt Disney goes way beyond novelty. Novelties are hardly this entertaining or enduring. Ra got into a Disney phase around 1989 when asked to interpret "Pink Elephants on Parade" from Dumbo for a pop tribute album to Disney called Stay Awake. Ra was so taken with Disney's music and images that he started to play shows dedicated exclusively to the man. When performing this material, the Arkestra went so far as to wear the patented Mouseketeer ears and had a dancer dressed in a Dumbo costume! The chosen compositions run the gamut from the more obscure to themes every kid of all ages could sing along with: "I'm Wishing," "Second Star to the Right," the eerie "The Forest of no Return," and "Someday My Prince Will Come." The titles sound as if Ra could have written them himself. The arrangements are in the same swing manner as his Fletcher Henderson tributes. June Tyson's vocals bring a romantic appeal, while bassoonist and percussionist James Jacson does his best Louis Armstrong impression, leading the sing along on "Zip a Dee Doo Dah." This may not be an essential disc for the Sun Ra novice, but if you wonder what it would have been like hanging out at Sun Ra's commune in Philadelphia watching Dumbo with the rest of the Arkestra (a favorite Ra practice in his later years!), get this immediately. As a footnote, this joyous Leo release is from an audience tape, and while the fidelity is good, audiophiles should be advised that it does have muddy moments. ~ Al Campbell
