Producers: Kirk Whalum, Tyrone Dickerson, Hal Sacks. Recorded live at West Angeles Cathedral, Los Angeles, California; Peace In The Valley, Arleta, California and Dark Horse Studios, Franklin, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Kirk Whalum. THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JAZZ CHAPTER 2 was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. Flanked by an impressive cadre of musicians and gospel vocalists, saxophonist Kirk Whalum offers an extended jazz paean to Jesus in this follow up to 1998's CHAPTER I of THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JAZZ. Recorded before a live audience in a cathedral in Los Angeles, Whalum's concert has the feel of a contemporary religious service, with applause and shouts from the audience. The numerous vocal spots ("El Todopoderoso" by Tata Vega; "Falling in Love With Jesus" by Jonathan Butler) give the impression of personal testimony. The music sustains Whalum's reputation as a master of the crossover jazz sound; he streamlines the idiom into a palatable amalgam of traditional jazz, urban R&B, groove-based motifs, world rhythms, soft, lyrical passages, and down-home gospel. Electric guitars, synthesizers, and vocals ensure that pop fans won't feel alienated, while Whalum's gentle tenor lines are unassailable in their technical expertise. A performance that succeeds as both a musical and Christian event, THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JAZZ CHAPTER II is solid fare for the hungry of ear and spirit.

New & Old Gospel
"New & Old Gospel" (01/14/1998) Jazz Instrument McLean, Jackie, EMI Records (Japan)Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Ornette Coleman (trumpet); Lamont Johnson (piano); Scott Holt (bass); Billy Higgins (drums). Saxophonist Jackie McLean lays down the hard bop gospel on NEW AND OLD GOSPEL, which features the compositions "Lifeline" and "Midway," among others. Originally issued in 1967, NEW AND OLD GOSPEL is one of the final albums in jazz saxophonist Jackie McLean's long and impressive run on the iconic Blue Note label. What makes this adventurous hard-bop album even more significant, however, is the presence of the legendary Ornette Coleman, in a rare turn as both a sideman and a trumpet player. Although Coleman graciously lets McLean, a powerhouse player in his own right, retain the center spotlight, the free-jazz giant undeniably shapes the proceedings, as best evinced on his own composition "Old Gospel," a lively and fiercely funky showcase for McLean's formidable alto-sax lines.
