"The Piano" (08/10/2004) Jazz Instrument Hancock, Herbie, Legacy RecordingsPreviously available only as a limited edition, Japanese import. Personnel: Herbie Hancock (piano). Liner Note Authors: Herbie Hancock; David Rubinson; Bob Belden. Recording information: CBS Studios, Tokyo, Japan (10/25/1978 - 10/26/1978). Herbie Hancock never really focused on solo piano. However, this 1978 release, which was previously only available in Japan, is a rare gem in the Hancock discography. Thanks to this overdue 2004 reissue, the listener is invited to explore the musical mind of this pianist in an up-close and intimate setting. All 11 tracks on THE PIANO are quite reflective, with Hancock employing many rich chordal textures and winding melodic gestures throughout. On "My Funny Valentine," Hancock combines the harmonic palette of Bill Evans with his own distinctive phrasing and unexpected modal shifts. His own composition "Blue Otani" is the only bluesy piece on this disc, and here Hancock slyly suggests the stride piano tradition without ever really playing in this style. "Harvest Time" is the most atmospheric piece on the album. As Hancock's fingers glide over the keys, one can almost envision the first blush of daybreak on a farm. For anybody seeking to better understand the conceptual and technical wizardry of Hancock, THE PIANO is a priceless find.

"Maiden Voyage [Remaster]" (06/14/2004) Jazz Instrument Hancock, Herbie, Blue Note Records (Japan)The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of MAIDEN VOYAGE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal. Personnel: Herbie Hancock (piano); George Coleman (tenor saxophone); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Ron Carter (bass); Tony Williams (drums). Recorded at Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 17, 1965. Originally released on Blue Note (BLP 4195). Includes liner notes by Herbie Hancock and Nora Kelly. Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. 24-bit digitally remastered Japanese version. Probably the best in Herbie Hancock's series of fine Blue Note albums from the 60s, Maiden Voyage finds him in what is basically the Miles Davis band of the time, with Miles replaced by the young Freddie Hubbard. Hancock has always been a fine composer, but Maiden Voyage contains two classic compositions in particular - the beautiful `Dolphin Dance', and the atmospheric and popular title track. Saxophonist George Coleman, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams play as well throughout as they have ever played, and the whole record is marked with a timeless freshness and sense of creative tension.

"Impulse" (02/24/1996) Jazz Instrument Blakey, Art, Universal Records (Germany)Full performer name: Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Bobby Timmons (piano); Jymie Merritt (bass). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 13 & 14, 1961. Includes original liner notes by Dick Katz. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studio). The legendary Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers took several forms throughout its long life. Many young musicians were nurtured in Blakey's band before going on to greatness themselves. One of the most prolific versions of this group existed in the period of the late-'50s and early-'60s, and included Wayne Shorter (before his work with Miles Davis), Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Jymie Merritt and Bobby Timmons. This unusual album on Impulse (the group recorded many great records for Blue Note) catches the Messengers at a pivotal moment just before Morgan and Timmons' departure and at the beginning of Fuller's tenure. Beginning with the hard swinging "Alamode," Blakey drives the three-man horn section forcefully as Timmons provides spicy punches underneath the weaving melody. The classic "Invitation" is given a slow and slinky treatment with Morgan's muted trumpet providing the perfect blue coloration. The disc's centerpiece is the lively "Circus," a perfect vehicle for the dexterous horns and dynamic rhythm section. The bluesy ballad "You Don't Know What Love Is," the ebullient "I Hear a Rhapsody" and the slow-grooving "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You" finish out this excellent document of a stirring group of jazz legends.
