Liner Note Author: Michael Ullman. Recording information: Fine Sound, New York, New York (12/1954). This album joined the talents of legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughan with those of 24-year-old wonder-trumpeter Clifford Brown for a December, 1954 released on Mercury Records subsidiary EmArcy. A warm and welcoming hiss washes over this album, giving it a graceful, familiar patina. One feels like a privileged listener let in on an intimate closed session. Brown's playing is sharp and confident throughout, and at times even bears a bit of a racy, histrionic edge. But it is clearly Vaughan who steals the show in this set. The opening and closing strains of "Jim" demonstrate her peerless intonation, as her voice blends with the rest of the instruments to create a mellifluous whole. On "Lullaby of Birdland," Vaughan wallows around her soupy lower register only seconds before breaking into some bebop maneuvering. It is interesting to listen to what kind of interpretive character her tight vibrato and winsome pitch-modulation bring to standards like "September Song," and the Gershwins' "Embraceable You." This is a thoroughly representative collection from one of jazz's all-time greats.

What a Diff'rence a Day Makes! by Dinah Washington (CD - 11/04/2003)
"What a Diff'rence a Day Makes!" (11/04/2003) Jazz Vocal Washington, Dinah, Verve (USA)Personnel includes: Dinah Washington (vocals); Belford Hendricks (conductor); Jerome Richardson (saxophone, flute); Charles Davis (baritone saxophone); Joe Zawinul (piano); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Milt Hinton (bass); Panama Francis (drums); Belford Hendricks Orchestra and Chorus. Producer: Clyde Otis. Reissue producer: Bryan Koniarz. Recorded at Fine Recording, New York, New York in 1959. Includes liner notes by Al Young. Digitally remastered using 24-Bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Universal Music Studios-East). This is part of the Verve Records Master Edition series. Personnel includes: Dinah Washington (vocals); Belford Hendricks (arranger, conductor). This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Dinah Washington (vocals); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Jerome Richardson (flute); Charles Davis (baritone saxophone); Joe Zawinul (piano); Milt Hinton (bass instrument); Panama Francis (drums). Liner Note Author: Al Young. Recording information: Fine Recording, New York, NY (1959). Arranger: Belford Hendricks. Dinah Washington's albums from the 1950s are among her best. On this '59 date, she sings with Belford Hendricks's chorus and orchestra (which includes Joe Zawinul on piano and Milt Hinton on bass), and her voice soars elegantly over the rich string arrangements and backing choir. Washington's vocals capture the beauty of each lyric, and the intensity with which she sings is undeniably stirring. The repertoire on this disc is timeless. After all, who could deny the significance of such tunes as "It Could Happen to You," "I Remember You," and others? These songs are not only firmly entrenched in the Great American Songbook; they are rooted in the very consciousness of jazz. "Cry Me a River" may be the most heartrending track on this disc. Here, Washington provides contrast to the Julie London version by interpreting this song with more of an edge. Her bluesy melodic turns and angular rhythms really bring out the indignation inherent in this lyric. Consisting solely of ballads, WHAT A DIFF'RENCE A DAY MAKES! sets up a wonderfully consistent mood and stands out as one of Washington's finest records.

This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. While there's no denying that jazz-pop star Diana Krall's movie-star good looks went a long way toward endearing her to mainstream America, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Just as undeniable are Krall's gifts as a pianist and singer. Far from a crass populist, she's a subtle, nuanced performer who approaches her craft with an excess of skill and knowledge. This is apparent from the very beginning of THE LOOK OF LOVE, when Krall tackles the overly familiar Gershwin chestnut "S'Wonderful" not the way countless jazz singers have done in preceding decades, but in a style influenced by Joao Gilberto, who recorded the tune years before in a simmering bossa nova mode. This marriage of canny craft and artistic inspiration is repeated again and again throughout the album. Most of the songs here have been trotted out countless times by Krall's contemporaries and (especially) predecessors, but her thoughtful phrasing and low-key dynamic shifts match her unhurried, pastel piano style on each tune to bring out something special at the song's core.

The Girl in the Other Room by Diana Krall (CD - 04/27/2004)
"The Girl in the Other Room" (04/27/2004) Jazz Vocal Krall, Diana, Verve (USA)This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Diana Krall (vocals, piano); Neil Larson (Hammond B-3 organ); Anthony Wilson (guitar); Christian McBride, John Clayton (bass); Peter Erskine, Jeff Hamilton, Terri Lynne Carrington (drums). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California and Avatar Studios, New York, New York. This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Diana Krall (vocals, piano); Anthony Wilson (guitar); Neil Larsen (Hammond b-3 organ); Christian McBride, John Clayton (bass instrument); Jeff Hamilton, Peter Erskine, Terri Lyne Carrington (drums). Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California (2004); Avatar, New York, New York (2004). It may or may not be significant that Diana Krall's first album of new material since the ascendance of Norah Jones is the former's least jazzy, most pop-savvy album of her career. In any case, it marks Krall's biggest departure to date; THE GIRL IN THE OTHER ROOM is almost entirely devoid of the jazz standards that constituted her previous repertoire, and it contains her first recorded batch of original songs. It's possible that new husband Elvis Costello, who co-wrote all six of those tunes with his wife, was the agent provocateur. It's also feasible that Costello, who has previously recorded Mose Allison material and palled around with Tom Waits, nudged Krall toward such choice selections as Allison's bluesy plaint "Stop This World" and Waits's cocktail rhumba "Temptation." Nevertheless, Krall delivers them--like the rest of the songs here--in a misty, laconic style very consistent with her earlier work. There's no attempt at pop-oriented production here, just the same piano-trio sound that's been Krall's stock in trade all along. Ironically, the jazziest tune here is Costello's early-1980s ballad "Almost Blue," previously performed by Chet Baker. Naturally, the new songs also bear the unmistakable stamp of Costello, but no matter how far afield her song sources (Joni Mitchell and Chris Smither's catalogs are drawn on as well), Krall maintains the trademark feel that made her famous.
