Woman is a Woman - [DVD] - Used

With A WOMAN IS A WOMAN, French director Jean-Luc Godard pays tribute to American musicals in much the same way that his debut feature, the critical and commercial smash hit BREATHLESS, did to American gangster films. The story follows the beautiful Angela (Anna Karina), a strip-tease artist who wants nothing more than to have a baby. Her live-in boyfriend, Emile (Jean-Claude Brialy), doesn't want to refuse and risk sparking major friction between the two. However, fed up with her constant pleading, Emile finally suggests that she shack up with his best friend, Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo), and much to Emile's dismay, she eventually takes his advice. Godard's second feature employs jump cuts and jarring sound mixing--most notably during Karina's strip-tease performances. A WOMAN IS A WOMAN is Godard at his most affectionate and good-natured. He also makes several cinematic in-jokes, including one in which Belmondo's character mentions that he wants to hurry home to watch BREATHLESS, the film that turned Belmondo into a megastar just one year before. Featuring a magnetically cute performance from Karina, who soon after the film became Godard's wife, this loving romantic comedy is a dazzler.

French auteur Jean-Luc Godard continues his fascination with the crime genre--after BREATHLESS and BAND OF OUTSIDERS--with PIERROT LE FOU. After escaping his stale, bourgeois marriage, Ferdinand Griffon (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a man on the run, encounters a captivating woman, Marianne (Godard's then-wife, Anna Karina). Striking up an immediate connection, the two begin a freewheeling affair that leads them to the Mediterranean Sea. There's one slight problem, though. Marianne is being pursued by a group of bloodthirsty mobsters who have chased her out of Algeria. Making matters worse for Ferdinand is the unfortunate fact that she turns out to be as much of a headache as his wife was, constantly referring to him as "Pierrot," much to his disdain. As their relationship reaches its boiling point, the hit men arrive, threatening to terminate both their relationship and their lives. Based on Lionel White's OBSESSION, PIERROT LE FOU is an example of a filmmaker's lack of preparation actually working to his benefit. Godard has said that he had no script on which to proceed, forcing him to make up the film as he went along. It is this seemingly improvised, brisk pacing--in addition to the performances of Belmondo and Karina--that makes the film such a fresh and original twist on an oft-mimicked genre.

Lino Ventura (ARMY OF SHADOWS) and Jean-Paul Belmondo (BREATHLESS) star in this crackling gangster drama. After hiding out in Milan for years, crime boss Abel Davros (Ventura) is determined to return to France--even though he's been given a death sentence there in his absence. Along with his young guardian (Belmondo), Abel encounters old faces and new deceptions in the Parisian underworld. Though there's plenty of chases, shoot-outs, and tough-guy dialogue, the greatness of CLASSE TOUS RISQUES lies in its rich performances and the carefully drawn friendship between the leads. Neglected upon its initial release--and championed by directors John Woo, Bernard Travenier, and Jean-Pierre Melville--Claude Sautet's French noir is a worthy candidate for rediscovery.

A spellbinding New Wave noir from director Jean-Pierre Melville (LE SAMOURAI).

Set in a beautiful vineyard in rural Provence, Claude Chabrol's (L'ENFER, LES BONNES FEMMES) first psychological thriller displays many of the concerns that would dominate his later work. Obsession, deception, and murder are the driving forces of this crime melodrama, at the center of which is patriarch Henri Marcoux (Jacques Dacqmine), who is having an affair with his gorgeous neighbor, Leda (Antonella Lualdi). His embittered wife, Thérèse (Madeleine Robinson, who won an Oscar for her performance), is well aware of his dalliance, as is his son, who is enjoying Leda's charms as well. Henri's daughter (Jeanne Valérie) has an admirer of her own in Hungarian layabout Laszlo Kovacs (Jean Paul Belmondo, in his last role before his breakout in BREATHLESS), while the maid, the aging gardener, and the milkman are not immune to the freely flowing passions. When Leda is murdered--her death a breathtaking, Hitchcockian scene composed in mirrors--the mystery begins in earnest, unfolding in flashbacks that destabilize the narrative, in much the same way that the lurid, Sirkian cinematography calls attention to the film's artifice.

A wealthy businessman living on the island of La Reunion orders a bride by mail and receives--instead of his intended--a beautiful, mysterious woman with a flimsy excuse. He marries the imposter anyway, but his dream life is shattered when the woman absconds with his bank account and leads him into a murky drama of missing persons and murder. Ultimately, this strange tale transforms into a surprisingly powerful adult love story, in which both participants find themselves able to forgive each other's failings and transgressions--allowing them to move forward without regret, or undue fear of what the future might hold. In the film's finale, Truffaut returns to the same barren, snowbound cabin that he used to such great effect in SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER, only this time the results are substantially less fatalistic.

This swinging spoof of Ian Fleming's spy hero features an aging James Bond (David Niven), reluctantly dragged out of retirement to chase down the evil crime clique called SMERSH. In order to confound the forces led by the villainous Le Chiffre (Orson Welles), the Secret Service enlists five other agents, also under the name "Bond," and all six converge on the titular casino. Meanwhile, Woody Allen, as the retiring secret agent's nephew, causes havoc at every turn. The gleefully chaotic product of five directors, numerous screenwriters, and the late 1960s in general, CASINO ROYALE revels in its psychedelic spy satire premise. The comedy features a legion of stars in roles both large and small: Niven, Welles, Allen, Peter Sellers, Ursula Andress, William Holden, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jacqueline Bisset, Deborah Kerr, and many more. (Apparently, Sellers and Welles despised each other, and Sellers would frequently not show up for his scenes.) Amid the wackiness, there are genuine moments of hilarity, making the film a surreal romp through Bond lore and the more eccentric aspects of 1960s pop culture.

Breathless - Full Screen

Godard's first feature has been widely hailed as one of the most influential motion pictures ever made. On the run after killing a cop, a small-time crook (Belmondo) hides out in Paris with an American girl (Seberg). After she betrays him, he chooses to face his fate with an absurd stoicism modelled on his hero, Humphrey Bogart. BREATHLESS is the arguable cornerstone of the French New Wave, exhibiting the trademark documentary shooting style, natural sound design, and thematic interest in the detritus of American popular culture. (Rereleased theatrically in April, 2000.)
