"Jesus Christ Superstar [Remaster]" (09/24/1996) Pop Vocal Original Soundtrack, MCA Records (USA)Music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics by Tim Rice. Principal cast: Murray Head (Judas Iscariot); Ian Gillan (Jesus Christ); Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene); Paul Raven (Priest); Mike D'Abo (King Herod). Personnel includes: Ian Gillian, Murray Head. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Principle cast: Steve Balsamo (Jesus Christ), Zubin Varla (Judas Iscariot), Joanna Ampil (Mary Magdalene), David Burt (Pontius Pilate), Alice Cooper (King Herod), Jonathan Hart (Peter), Glen Carter (Simon Zealotes), Peter Gallagher (Caiaphas, High Priest), Martin Callaghan (Annas). Producers: Andrew Lloyd Webber, Nigel Wright, Tim Rice. Conceived by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice while the British duo were still in their early 20s, the rock opera JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR was released in 1970 as a studio album before its many subsequent stage productions. Featuring Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan as Jesus and Murray Head as Judas, this recording presents the initial versions of these well-known Broadway tunes, including the funky, frenetic "What's the Buzz?/Strange Thing Mystifying" and "The Temple," a hauntingly chaotic number. Although other productions of the musical are highly regarded, this original version is arguably the best.

"Jesus Christ Superstar [25th Anniversary Reissue]" (03/24/1998) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, MCA Records (USA)Cast includes: Ted Neely (Jesus Christ); Carl Anderson (Judas Iscariot); Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene); Joshua Mostel (King Herod). Originally conceived as a double-album project by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber back in the days of vinyl albums, the original version was a huge success, leading to stage shows and eventually this, the original motion picture soundtrack version of Webber's original score. The score is conducted here by Andr? Previn with cast vocal support by Ted Neeley, Yvonne Elliman, and Carl Anderson. Fans of Webber's over-the-top glitz will not be disappointed in this version, as the soundtrack was the perfect opportunity to milk the score for all it was visually and musically worth. ~ Cub Koda

"Jesus Christ Superstar [Decca 2003 Reissue]" (06/28/2005) Soundtracks Original Cast, Decca BroadwayMusic composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics written by Tim Rice. Principal Cast: Ben Vereen (Judas Iscariot); Jeff Fenholt (Jesus Christ); Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdelene); Bob Bingham (Caiaphas, High Priest); Phil Jethro (Annas); Barry Dennen (Pointus Pilate); Paul Ainsley (King Herold); Alan Braunstein (Priest #1); Michael Meadows (Priest #2); Steven Bell (Priest #3); Michael Jason (Peter); Samuel Wright (Simon Zealotes). Recorded in New York, New York on October 20, 1971. Originally released on Decca (DL7-1503). Includes liner notes by Peter Filichia. Audio Remixer: Elvin Campbell. Liner Note Author: Peter Filichia. Recording information: New York, NY (10/20/1971). Photographer: Jay Thompson. Writers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice set several precedents with this album. First, it is a pre-stage studio version, and it topped the US charts upon release. Second, it is the first show to successfully put rock music in a theatrical context (Hair is really a pop/show-music pastiche, not rock). Third, it is a "sung-through" musical without spoken dialog, technically an operetta. Fourth, though musicals had turned more serious at this point, writing a show about Jesus Christ from the point of view of Judas was about as daring as you could get. It succeeds in all ways. In addition to the title song (a #14 hit sung by Murray Head), it includes "I Don't Know How to Love Him" by Yvonne Elliman. ~ William Ruhlmann

Director Gale Edwards's film is an updated stage version of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's acclaimed masterpiece. Experience the last seven days in the earthly life of Jesus through the magic and wonder of a catchy and inspirational score. From his triumphant entry into Jerusalem and the enmity that this naturally arouses to his trial by the sympathetic but ultimately partisan Pontius Pilate, follow Christ as he assumes the role he was born to play. Notably, in a career change that some British comedy fans may find a bit odd, Rik Mayall (known to fans of THE YOUNG ONES as left-wing New Waver Rick) stars.

"Jesus Christ Superstar [London Revival Cast]" (03/27/2001) Soundtracks Original Cast, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics written by Tim Rice. Principal cast: Glenn Carter (Jesus); Jerome Pradon (Judas); Renee Castle (mary); Fred Johanson (Pilate); Rik Mayall (Herod); Frederick B. Owens (Caiaphas); Michael Shaeffer (Annas); Tony Vincent (Simon); Cavin Cornwall (Peter). Producers: Andrew Lloyd Webber, Nigel Wright. Recorded at Whitfield Street Studios, London, England. No, it's not the original cast with Ian Gillian, but this London revival cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's and Tim Rice's musical Jesus Christ Superstar is still quite effective and sometimes brilliant. There are good arguments to be made for Glenn Carter's masterful and very modern performance as Christ, and Jerome Pradon's Judas Iscariot. This is less of a rock & roll performance to be sure, and far more theatrical along the lines of today's musicals, but that said, these performances are as emotional as they are showy. Say what you will about Webber and his later works and how stirring they are, but never was the music he composed any more emotional and deeply moving as it is here. Whether it's in the performance of "Gethsemane," or of Renee Castle's reading of "I Don't Know How to Love Him," (a song so closely associated with Yvonne Elliman it would almost seem sacrilegious to cover it outside a musical, though many did in the '70s), they come off as honest and convincing. ~ Thom Jurek

An innovative example of modern techniques in moviemaking, this famous rock opera depicts the last week of Christ's life. Norman Jewison (MOONSTRUCK; IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT) directed this thrilling adaptation of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, starring Ted Neeley as Jesus and Carl Anderson as Judas Iscariot. Among the classic songs in the film are "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Hosanna," and "King Herod's Song (Try It and See)." The song score was nominated for an Academy Award.

"The Beatles Album/Jesus Christ Superstar" (03/14/2006) Easy Listening Faith, Percy, Collectables Records2 LPs On 1 CD: THE BEATLES ALBUM (1970)/JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR (1971). Originally released on Columbia. Liner Note Author: Al Fichera. Recording information: 05/12/1970-08/27/1971. Originally released on Columbia, these two Percy Faith albums zero in on easy listening versions of songs by the Beatles and from Jesus Christ Superstar. The rather formulaic treatments work best on the compositions of Lennon and McCartney, especially "The Fool on the Hill" and "Yesterday." The 12 highlights from the original score of Jesus Christ Superstar include lackluster versions of "Superstar," "Everything's Alright," and "I Don't Know How to Love Him." Not an essential purchase by a long shot, but this disc will provide kitschy moments for your next cocktail party. In 2002, Collectables began reissuing Faith's Columbia titles as two-fers with original cover art and song sequences. ~ Al Campbell
