Often thought of as the quintessential poet of New England, Robert Frost is one of the most widely read American poets of the 20th century. But in spite of his ties to New England, he was born in San Francisco; he published his first book of poetry in England rather than the United States; he matured as a poet during his years abroad; and upon his return to America, he sometimes taught at the University of Michigan and spent many of his winters in Florida. This reference book provides hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries on Frost's poems and illuminates the complexities of his life and writings. Entries are written by expert contributors and conclude with brief citations of additional sources of information. The volume includes a chronology and closes with a bibliography of major studies.

When the first edition of this study was begun, Robert Frost was still with us, enjoying the final years of his immense and deserved popularity. His living presence offered the scholar of 1962 a precious sense of connection with the modern movement in American poetry which extended back to its earliest beginnings in 1912-13. That continuity has been broken almost totally today. The literary moment recedes further into history, with Archibald MacLeish now perhaps our sole surviving link with the early days. By the time the first edition was in print, Robert Frost had died, but the anticipated wave of material in print concerning him and his work had not yet gathered its full strength. During the years since Frost's death, much has been printed that has made a revision of this work not only desirable but mandatory.
