Stephen King by Tony Magistrale (Hardcover - Twayne Pub)
The popular success of Stephen King's novels is, of course, a fact beyond dispute. Perhaps because of his popularity, however, he has been denigrated or ignored by most literary critics and scholars. A previous volume in Twayne's United States Authors Series, Joseph Reino's Stephen King: The First Decade, Carrie to Pet Sematary (1988) redressed the balance for King's works published between 1974 and 1983. In the present work, Tony Magistrale takes a critical look at the novels and non-fiction of King's second decade, devoting extended analyses to King's critical study of the horror genre, Danse Macabre, and to the novels published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Magistrale shows that King cannot be confined to the reductive categories of genre fiction. Rather, the master of the macabre has drawn on many literary traditions from both high culture and low culture in the composition of his novels. Moreover, Magistrale makes a convincing case that King's art has a depth and subtlety rarely found either among "serious" or "popular" writers, and that his work is characterized by an astute knowledge of fundamental American myths and archetypes. Especially notable features of this book include the extensive interview with Stephen King that makes up the bulk of the first chapter, and the author's insightful and well-informed analysis of the "gothic inheritance". Stephen King: The Second Decade is an important revaluation of a fascinating writer, and will appeal to students and scholars of American literature and popular culture.

This is the first critical work on King to examine his most recent novels, Dolores Claiborne, Insomnia, and Rose Madder, and to analyze the many threads of his fiction in a way that is accessible to young adults and general readers. It is designed to help the reader understand the carefully organized narrative structure of his novels, the relation of his fiction to the horror and science fiction genres and to each other, character development, and stylistic and thematic concerns that recur and evolve throughout his work. Following a biographical chapter that links his life to the development of his fiction, Russell offers an overview chapter on all his novels. Individual chapters examine nine representative novels: in addition to the three mentioned above, Russell examines 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, The Stand, The Dark Half, The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands, and Needful Things. More Things Than Are Dreamt of by James Ursini (Paperback - Limelight Editions)
For centuries, perhaps from the beginning of time, people young and old have been drawn to the genre of supernatural horror, first on the printed page and then on the screen. From fairy tales to Freddy Krueger, the appeal of the genre rests on the all too human search for something above nature, something unknown and unnameable. This search has produced works as memorable as they are terrifying, and we feel their power once again in More Things Than Are Dreamt Of. The sweep of the book encompasses almost two centuries as it reconsiders in detail such classics of literature as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, tales of Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Henry James' The Turn of the Screw and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, right up to such contemporary novels of horror as Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby, William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist and Stephen King's The Dead Zone. But what sets this book apart is that the authors go on to study the most significant feature films derived from these and many other works of fiction, from the silent era until today. Theme, plot, characters and place, the primary elements of the novels and stories, are considered first as originally conceived and then again as they achieve a new and often different life on the screen. Explaining the why and the how of these acts of transformation is the great accomplishment of More Things Than Are Dreamt Of, a book that enhances our understanding of both literature and film. And of course all the while it helps us to experience again those agreeable shudders and chills that come from beyond our dreams.

Writing Horror and the Body by Linda Badley (Hardcover - Greenwood Pub Group)
In this sequel to Film, Horror, and the Body Fantastic, Badley examines horror fiction as a fantastic genre in which images of the body and the self are articulated and modified. Badley places horror fiction in its cultural context, drawing important connections to theories of gender and sexuality. As our culture places increasing importance on body image, horror fiction has provided a language for imagining the self in new ways--often as ungendered, transformed, or re-generated. Focusing on the works of Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Anne Rice, Badley approaches horror as a discourse that articulates the anxieties of our culture.
