"MTV Power Pop" (04/06/2004) Rock & Pop Karaoke, Singing Machine (Karaoke)Don't be duped by the snappy artwork and modern color scheme. Despite the MTV branding, Power Pop is actually a quickie karaoke disc populated with passable backing tracks and absolutely horrible remakes. The template is familiar: match eight cuts from a particular genre to vocal-less versions designed for singing along on the home front. The quality is also familiar -- familiarly awful. This installment features an earnest yet thin-voiced woman trying desperately to resemble everyone from Avril Lavigne ("Complicated") and Kylie Minogue ("Love at First Sight") to Yanou of DJ Sammy and "Heaven" fame. This makes it worse, as MTV Power Pop isn't even power pop as the term usually applies. Ugh. ~ Johnny Loftus

"MTV Return to Rock" (04/06/2004) Rock & Pop Karaoke, Singing Machine (Karaoke)MTV Return to Rock is another in a long line of egregiously awful karaoke CDs, branded with the MTV nameplate but manufactured by The Singing Machine. It follows the series template, offering eight crappy remakes -- in this case, of seemingly randomly generated modern rock cuts -- matched to versions with the lead vocals removed. The better to aid singing along at home, see. It's honorable to provide fans with karaoke backing tracks to their fave hits from Nickelback, blink-182, or Uncle Kracker. But to actually charge money for the remakes portion of this disc is just criminal. If you'd like recorded proof of how bad most karaoke actually sounds, then by all means check out the version of Cake's "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" included here. MTV Return to Rock is a motorcade of stupidity. ~ Johnny Loftus

"MTV Pop Favorites" (04/06/2004) R&B Karaoke, Singing Machine (Karaoke)This series from The Singing Machine and MTV just finds new ways to annoy. In this episode, Pop Favorites butchers J.Lo's "Jenny from the Block," "1000 Miles" from Vanessa Carlton, and Three Doors Down's "When I'm Gone," illustrating for anyone interested in the set's karaoke-intended backing tracks just how bad the pastime really can get. MTV Pop Favorites also tries its damnedest to destroy Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You," but in a nod to just how sinewy the Neptunes' grooves really are, its beat can't be broken by this new level of karaoke awful. ~ Johnny Loftus

"MTV Breakin' It Down [PA]" (04/06/2004) R&B Karaoke, Singing Machine (Karaoke)MTV Breakin' It Down's karaoke backing tracks are of nominally better quality than most of the titles in this unfortunate series from The Singing Machine and MTV. But as usual, the eight remakes here are quite weak in the vocal department. The song choice is also odd. Both "Fallen" and "A Woman's Worth" from Alicia Keyes? It's difficult to believe that there wasn't at least one other single of proper enough "breakin' it down" quality to be included here. ~ Johnny Loftus

"MTV Sugar N Spice [PA]" (04/06/2004) R&B Karaoke, Singing Machine (Karaoke)Though it's branded as a production of the iconic video and entertainment network, MTV Sugar N Spice is actually a generic karaoke disc. Its dual program features remakes of Top 40 fair, followed by the same songs sans vocals, to aid in the at-home singalong fun. MTV Sugar N Spice is probably serviceable in this latter capacity, as its backing tracks are what you'd hear inside any chintzy karaoke club. But it's the album's remakes that sink it. Versions of Pink's "Get the Party Started" and Michelle Branch's "Everywhere" are tepid and thin -- there's absolutely no reason why anyone should pay money for a disc that literally sounds like your drunk friends singing at the bar. Avoid this at all costs. At least in real life, your friends will buy you drinks. ~ Johnny Loftus
