The Gene Kelly Collection (5-Disc Set Includes "Gene Kelly: Anatomy of a Dancer") [DVD]
Description:
Includes three classic Gene Kelly motion pictures: SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, and ON THE TOWN. See individual titles for detailed information.
Xanadu (Magical Edition) [DVD]
A young album-painter learns a lesson about daring to dream when he is kissed by a magical muse. Throwing caution to the wind, he partners up with a wealthy former jazz musician to start-up a roller disco nightclub, but finds that one of his dreams might be too lofty--even for the powers that be. A modern musical featuring the musical talents of Olivia Newton-John, Electric Light Orchestra, the Tubes, and Cliff Richard, with a touch of cartoon from animator Don Bluth.
Singin' in the Rain (Two Disc Special Edition) [DVD]
"Just about the best Hollywood musical of all time," wrote Pauline Kael about SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. After years of honing his skills on the vaudeville stage, hoofer Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has finally reached the top and become a swashbuckling star of the silent silver screen. Then the self-satisfied celebrity has his confidence shattered when ingenue Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) dismisses film actors as "shadows" without substance. After getting over the insult, he falls hard for her--much to the consternation of his costar, the sexy, selfish Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who wants Don all to herself. But Don has career troubles too. The wild popularity of THE JAZZ SINGER has studios scrambling to change from silent films to talkies, and Lina's shrill voice and Don's stiff acting left the preview audience roaring with laughter. There's only one way to save the movie and their careers: turn THE DUELLING CAVALIER into a musical, with Kathy secretly dubbing in Lina's lines and songs. But can they hide the truth from Lina?
Take Me Out to the Ball Game [DVD]
Singing, dancing baseball players Dennis Ryan (Frank Sinatra) and Eddie O'Brien (Gene Kelly) find their friendship tested when both fall for the new, female owner of their team (water-ballet diva Esther Williams). Meanwhile, a crooked gambler (Edward Arnold) tries to sabotage the big game by getting O'Brien fired. It all gets resolved with lots of comedy, songs, dances, and baseball action in a colorful, turn-of-the-century setting. (Miss Williams even swims a few laps in the hotel pool.) Busby Berkeley directed TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME, but left the choreography to Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, thus the dance numbers emphasize Kelly's athletic grace rather than the fluid camerawork that is Berkeley's signature. Berkeley's exuberant affection for early Americana and his unerring knack for zingy comedy are both on full display, however, and frowns are not an option. Songs include: "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," "The Hat My Father Wore on St. Patrick's Day," and "Yes, Indeedy."
Anchors Aweigh [DVD]
Gangway for Sinatra and Kelly as song and dance lead the list of activities when sailors on shore leave fall in with a fatherless boy and his beautiful aunt. Includes the irresistible dance sequence with Kelly and Jerry, the cartoon mouse. Academy Award Nominations: 5, including Best Picture, Best Actor Gene Kelly, Best Song ("I Fall in Love Too Easily"). Academy Awards: Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.
Cole Porter Collection
Composer and lyricist Cole Porter is the focus of this 5-volume collection of classic Hollywood musicals. The films, all featuring classic Porter songs, are LES GIRLS (1957), BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940 (1940), SILK STOCKINGS (1957), HIGH SOCIETY (1955), and KISS ME KATE (1953). For synopsis information, please see individual titles.
Xanadu (Magical Music Edition; Bonus Soundtrack CD) [DVD]
Summer Stock
Farm folk interact with city slickers who come to their sleepy community to rehearse a play. As a bonus, this tape contains Garland's first effort for MGM, the minimusical "Every Sunday" - directed by Felix E. Feist.
Cover Girl [DVD]
Rusty Parker (Rita Hayworth) longs to leave behind her job as a Brooklyn dancer and be a Broadway star. Things begin to look up for her when she enters a "Cover Girl" contest--she reminds the wealthy publisher of a lost love, and lands on the cover. As fate would have it, she is the granddaughter of the woman who broke the publisher's heart. Thus, Rusty begins a winning streak which sees her gathering the attentions of several wealthy men...but is it really the faithful Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly) whom she loves? This very funny Kern and Gershwin music features many lavish production numbers featuring the stunning Hayworth, great dancing by Kelly, and strong supporting roles from Phil Silvers and Eve Arden. Academy Award Nominations: 5. Academy Awards: Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.
Classic Musicals Collection
Containing five glorious musicals, this collection offers a fantastic array of titles. Among them are: THE BAND WAGON: Fading movie musical star Tony Hunter, down and out in Hollywood, decides to try his luck on the Broadway stage. Unfortunately, the simple hoofer discovers that a pretentious director has control of the project, and that instead of good humor, happy songs and a tapping chorus line, there'll be lengthy speeches, heavy drama and lots of deep soul-searching. Even worse, Tony's expected to dance with a classical ballerina! Thanks to the massive egos of everyone involved, the play, to no one's surprise, lays an egg. But now Tony takes charge, and he's out to prove the show must go on -- his way! Some of the dazzling Astaire dance numbers include "Triplets," "Girl Hunt," "Dancing in the Dark" and "That's Entertainment." BELLS ARE RINGING: Holliday's last screen appearance and perhaps her best, reprising her stage role in the Comden and Green musical. Holliday plays a switchboard operator at a Manhattan telephone answering service, Susanswerphone, who gets mixed up in her kooky clients' lives, acting as both muse and therapist, eventually falling in love with a client's voice. Early appearance by Stapleton, and a cameo by Holliday's husband, saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. The picture's many musical hits include "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over." Academy Award Nominations: Best Scoring of a Musical Picture. BRIGADOON: Romance blooms for an American who stumbles upon a magical Scottish village visible for one day every hundred years. Bagpipes and brogues abound in the Technicolor Highlands, and the Lerner and Loewe score makes this one of the most underrated of the grand 1950s musicals. EASTER PARADE: An Irving Berlin spectacular in which Astaire plays the part of a dance man whose partner abandons the act. Fortunately, his new partner turns out to be Garland. This is the only picture in which the two superstars worked together. Academy Awards: Best Scoring of a Musical Picture. FINIAN'S RAINBOW: It's hard to believe THE GODFATHER filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola was also responsible for this charming, whimsical musical. Fred Astaire stars in his last full-length musical role as Finian McLonergan. In Ireland, Finian manages to steal a pot of gold from unlucky leprechaun Og (Tommy Steele). Finian and daughter Sharon (Petula Clark) journey to Rainbow Valley in America and join the townspeople there in defending themselves against the racist Senator Billboard Rawkins (Keenan Wynn). The buried gold becomes the lucky crock that helps Og, Finian, and the townspeople fulfill their dreams.
That's Entertainment! - Pt. 2 [DVD]
Once again MGM presents numerous clips from its own archive--and from those of other studios--to create a joyful collage of the finest musical and choreographic numbers in cinema history. Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire host the selection of clips from classic MGM comedies and musicals, which features cinematic greats such as Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, the Marx Brothers, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Cyd Charisse, Debbie Reynolds, Clark Gable, and dozens of others in a nostalgic, wistful portrait of old Hollywood.
Hello, Dolly! (Widescreen Edition; Spa Cash) [DVD]
In early-20th-century Yonkers, a wealthy local merchant, Horace Vandergelder (played by Walter Matthau), hires matchmaker Dolly Levi (Barbra Streisand) to find a mate for him--but instead she decides to win him over for herself. His life is further complicated by his young niece, Ermengarde, who is determined to wed an artist Horace finds entirely unsuitable, and by his two hapless employees, who against Horace's wishes leave work to venture into New York so each can kiss a girl. Miserly, curmudgeonly, irascible Horace finds that matters have gotten completely out of his control--and the only person who seems to know exactly what is going on is the widowed Dolly Levi. The film is based on a succession of source material, beginning with the 1835 British play A DAY WELL SPENT by John Oxenford, Thornton Wilder's 1938 play THE MERCHANT OF YONKERS, and Wilder's successful 1954 adaptation of his own play, renamed THE MATCHMAKER, rewritten for Ruth Gordon and then made into a film by the same name in 1958 starring Shirley Booth. In 1964, Carol Channing starred in the story's next incarnation on Broadway: Michael Stewart's play HELLO, DOLLY! on which this film's screenplay is directly based.
On the Town [DVD]
Co-directors Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen (SINGIN' IN THE RAIN) also choreographed this musical classic following three sailors docked in New York City for 24 hours. New to town and ready to see the sights--and the girls--Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin search for adventure in the Big Apple. Wooing the ladies with their singing and dancing and being charmed in return, the trio finds various degrees of romantic success. But as all good things must come to an end, the navy men return to their ship, leaving behind them a city briefly brighter and taking with them a heartful of memories. Dancing by the marvelous and masculine Kelly and singing by heartthrob Sinatra (looking very young!) add punch and pizzazz to the musical numbers, including the famous "New York, New York" scene. ON THE TOWN was one of the first movies filmed on location in New York--a wild extravagance in those days--and the extra effort taken shows in every shot of the film.
Ziegfeld Follies
This MGM spectacular features many of the greatest stars of the theater and screen. A lavish salute to Broadway's most opulent producer.
Brigadoon
Romance blooms for an American who stumbles upon a magical Scottish village visible for one day every hundred years. Bagpipes and brogues abound in the Technicolor Highlands, and the Lerner and Loewe score makes this one of the most underrated of the grand 1950s musicals.
That's Dancing [DVD]
The above-mentioned artists host an exciting collection of dance footage taken from films from the 1930's to today. Virtually every form of dance ever captured on film is included.
The Pirate [DVD]
Cole Porter extravaganza in which Gene Kelly, a circus clown, convinces Judy Garland that he is the pirate of her dreams. Contains many first-rate song and dance routines. Academy Award Nominations: Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.
Classic Musicals Collection: Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory
Five classic musicals are collected here, including: IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER, SUMMER STOCK, THREE LITTLE WORDS, TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY, and ZIEGFELD FOLLIES. See individual titles for synopsis information.
That's Entertainment! [DVD]
A jewel box full of precious scenes from almost 100 MGM musicals.
DuBarry Was a Lady [DVD]
Two talented redheads cavort through the court of King Louis XV in one of MGM's lightest and frothiest musical concoctions. Adapted from a Cole Porter Broadway show but missing most of its best songs, it's still a treat to see Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra in powdered wigs.
It's Always Fair Weather
Three war buddies meet for a ten year reunion and find they have nothing in common. Great dancing by Kelly and Charisse, with a score by Andre Previn. Includes songs "The Binge" and "Thanks A Lot But No Thanks." Academy Award Nominations: Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.
The Young Girls of Rochefort [DVD]
A joyous musical that outdoes its Hollywood predecessors with naive romance, decadent art direction and an appearance by the legendary Gene Kelly, THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT, a follow up to Demy's previous collaboration with Catherine Deneuve and composer Michel Legrand, is entirely sung. A pair of sisters (Deneuve and her real life sister Francoise Dorleac) who teach and compose music in the French town of Rochefort seek love and success in Paris. When two young men with a travelling carnival come to town, they help the sisters put on a song and dance number that gives them instant success, while simultaneously, a love struck sailor finds his ideal woman in Deneuve. To top it off, even the mother of the two women finds a long lost love.
Classic Musicals Collection: Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory Volume 2 [DVD]
Seven classic musicals are collected here, including: THE PIRATE, ROYAL WEDDING, THE BELLE OF NEW YORK, THAT MIDNIGHT KISS, THE TOAST OF NEW ORLEANS, THAT'S DANCING, and WORDS AND MUSIC. Please see individual titles for synopsis information.
For Me and My Gal [DVD]
An unusually dramatic Busby Berkeley musical, FOR ME AND MY GAL chronicles the love and struggles of vaudeville team Harry Palmer (Gene Kelly, in his film debut) and Jo Hayden (a stunning Judy Garland) as they pursue their big dream of playing New York's prestigious Palace Theater. Just as that dream is about to finally come true, World War I breaks out and Harry is called into service. When he maims himself to avoid the draft, Jo can't forgive his cowardice, and Harry must search his soul for a way to redeem himself in the eyes of his country, and the woman who taught him to love it. The score is filled with old favorites from World War I, including "Beautiful Doll," "You Were a Tulip," "Over There," "Long, Long Trail," and "Oui, Oui, Marie," but it's Kelly and Garland's sublime rendition of the title tune that lingers. It became a best-selling record at the time, and the movie was also a major hit. With its panoramic scope of war, seduction, betrayal, and redemption, FOR ME AND MY GAL is an American musical of rare emotion and power.
An American in Paris [DVD]
One of the greatest of 1950s screen musicals is a happy collaboration between the grace and athleticism of Gene Kelly and the colorful palette of director Vincente Minnelli. An American G.I. lingers in Paris after the war to study painting and soon falls in love with Leslie Caron, an engaged demoiselle, much to the chagrin of his romance-minded benefactress. This classic musical boasts a 17-minute avant-garde ballet choreographed by Kelly to George Gershwin's unbeatable music. AN AMERICAN IN PARIS garnered eight Academy Award nominations and six wins, including Best Picture and Best Story and Screenplay. Kelly won a special Oscar for his inimitable achievements.
An American in Paris (Special Edition) [DVD]
Les Girls
An original, unconventional musical boasting some of MGM's finest talents of the time, LES GIRLS tells the tale of a performing troupe of three charming girls who discovered that their romantic adventures got in the way of their act. The dynamite combination of Barry (Gene Kelly), Angele (Taina Elg), Joy (Mitzi Gaynor), and Sybil (Kay Kendall) are the former members of Barry Nichols and Les Girls, a popular European cabaret act. Years after the group is dissolved, the now Lady Sybil Wren faces a libel suit after publishing a scandalous account of the group in her memoirs. All the former partners are called into court to give their own widely contradicting accounts of those long-ago events, whereupon the film becomes a sort of musical RASHOMON. LES GIRLS is a dazzling adaptation of Vera Caspary's novel, featuring Cole Porter's last score.
