Based on the children's fantasy by Antoine de Saint-Exupèry and embraced by the soaring music of Lerner and Loewe, the musical story of a pilot's crash in the Sahara Desert and his encounter with a strange little boy receives the glowing attention to detail, color, and charm that a film adaptation of such a beloved book deserves. As the downed pilot listens to the little boy's story of his travels to distant planets and the strange people and animals he encounters, the airman realizes that the boy's wisdom and perception are going to change how he himself sees the world. Well known for his richly voiced narration, supporting-role TV and movie appearances, and powerful leads in Broadway plays, Richard Kiley stars as the pilot whose world is overturned physically by the crash of his plane and philosophically by his encounter with the prince from another planet. The Little Prince himself (Steven Warner) made only this one feature film. And although Lerner, Loewe, and Donen all created thriving film-musical careers, THE LITTLE PRINCE and ROYAL WEDDING were the only musicals on which Lerner and Donen ever collaborated.

Acclaimed B-movie director Edgar G. Ulmer filmed this selection of memorable musical performances, loosely connected by the story of Nora, an Irish scrubwoman (Marsha Hunt) whose passion for classical music causes her to clash with her jazz-loving pianist son (William Prince). The rift caused by their musical differences is eventually healed amid the music of the hall, where Nora works. Arthur Rubinstein, Bruno Walter, and Leopold Stowkowski conduct such accomplished classical performers as vocalists Lily Pons, Ezio Pinza, and Rise Stevens; cellist Gregor Piatgorsky, and violin virtuoso Jascha Heifetz. Vaughn Monroe's orchestra and jazz trumpeter Harry James also show up, and Nora realizes maybe jazz is okay after all. This was clearly a labor of love for Ulmer, and his fluid direction captures the grandeur and excitement of the concert experience. The main story may be a bit trite, but as a document of these legendary musicians in action, this is a gem that deserves an honored spot in any classical music or film lover's collection.

PURPLE RAIN: Music star Prince stars as "The Kid" in this semi-autobiographical film, which follows the escapades of a tortured young musician trying to survive in a dysfunctional environment. He finds solace in the affections of a lovely young singer, but his first love is making his funky, unique brand of music, which he performs at an ultra-hip Minneapolis nightclub. The Kid must also contend with Morris, his nemesis both in music and romance. The popular soundtrack of this highly successful film contains many of Prince's most popular tunes, such as "Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry," and the title song. FAME: In this Alan Parker film, teenagers selected for New York City's High School for the Performing Arts push their talents to the limit to make it big in show business. This episodic tale follows savvy Coco (Irene Cara), timid Doris (Maureen Teefy), gay Montgomery (Paul McCrane), macho Raul (Barry Miller), soulful Bruno (Lee Curreri), and others as they struggle to achieve their dreams of stardom while coping with the universal teenage problems of loneliness, insecurity, and embattled, mercurial identity.
