"Smoke on the Water & Other Hits" (04/03/2001) Rock & Pop Deep Purple, Flashback RecordsDeep Purple has been the subject of many greatest-hits compilations. This ten-track budget set from Warner's Flashback label includes the original full-length versions of the band's biggest hits, like "Smoke on the Water" and "Woman from Tokyo," while also shining a light on early to mid-'70s metal gems "Burn," "Fireball," and "Highway Star." The selection is decent, but some fans may question the inclusion of "Never Before" and "Stormbringer" over "Strange Kind of Woman" and "Speed King." For a more thorough trip through Deep Purple's catalog, pick up The Very Best of Deep Purple on Rhino. ~ Al Campbell

"The New What Next" (10/01/2004) Rock & Pop Hot Water Music, Epitaph Records (USA)Hot Water Music: Jason Black, Chuck Ragan, Chris Wollard. Audio Mixer: Brian McTernan. Recording information: Salad Days. Photographer: Chrissy Piper. Melodic neo-punk outfit Hot Water Music delivers another tightly constructed album of hard-hitting fare with THE NEW WHAT NEXT. Like 2002's CAUTION, THE NEW WHAT NEXT packs a massive sonic wallop, abetted by a crisp, high-sheen production that lets the group's surging power chords, ringing guitar leads, and jackhammer rhythms come through loud and clear. While the muscle and aggression of Hot Water Music's approach gives a clear nod to classic punk, the band is never shambolic or flip; their lock-sealed chemistry betrays years of practice and meticulous construction. The band also incorporates elements of punk-pop (a la the Descendents and Green Day), indie rock (see the moody, appeggiated verses of "This Early Grave"), and nu-metal (in their anthemic choruses and epic, stadium-tailored sound). Whether pummeling listeners with blistering, pulse-accelerating rockers ("Giver"), or buoying them along on chugging, mid-tempo numbers ("Bottomless Seas"), Hot Water Music never falters in intensity. Fortunately, the band's penchant for sing-along hooks (the plaintive melody of "All Heads Down," for example), and for instrumental interplay (the bass-and-guitar push-pull on "Ink and Lead") counterpoints the thrash to keep the high-energy, high-impact dynamic of THE NEW WHAT NEXT interesting.

Audio Remasterer: Tony Cousins. Audio Remixer: Ken Scott. Liner Note Authors: Gus Dudgeon; John Tobler. Recording information: Trident Studio, London, England (02/27/1971-08/14/1971). Director: Robert Kirby. Editor: Gus Skinas. Illustrator: David Larkham. Photographers: Bob Gruen; David Larkham. Unknown Contributor Roles: Steve Brown; Bernie Taupin. Arranger: Paul Buckmaster. MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER produced only a couple of minor hits, which may have something to do with the fact that its best songs are all five or six minutes long. But they're among the strongest songs in the entire Elton John catalog--especially the lovely opening track, "Tiny Dancer," which builds from a light, delicately melodic verse to a sweeping, dramatic chorus. Another highlight is the inscrutably biographic "Levon," whose title character was born "on a Christmas day when the New York Times said God is dead." John's luxurious piano melodies, Bernie Taupin's poetic lyrics, and Paul Buckmaster's lush string arrangements all stretch out on MADMAN, giving the record a grandiose, sweeping feel when it is not riding dark, surging currents, as on the memorably edgy title track. There is a painstaking, interior quality here that goes missing from John's early pop-song oriented albums and from the later excesses of GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. For this reason, MADMAN ON THE WATER is a crucial, unique addition to the John catalogue.

"To Record Only Water for Ten Days" (02/13/2001) Rock & Pop Frusciante, John, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)John Frusciante is the guitarist from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Solo performer: John Frusciante (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, programming). Audio Mixer: Jimmy Boyle. With the opening kick of a simple but loud drum machine beat and multiple full-throttle guitar wails over the top, it quickly becomes apparent that John Frusciante has also given a swift kick to his heroin addiction. Hard drugs left the Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitarist derailed, deranged, and near death before an L.A. Weekly reporter detailed his frail state in a chilling story, moving some friends to help Frusciante check into a rehab center. He got off drugs and rejoined the Peppers in time to help Californication become a critical and popular success in 1999. In his time off from the band, however, Frusciante released two solo records, which he later admitted were made for drug money. Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt and Smile From the Streets You Hold displayed an intriguingly dark departure from the Peppers' polished funky punk. The scratchy and naked lo-fi ramblings reveled in the art of voyeuristic discomfort. And while some of the results displayed intense, edge-teetering freakouts, ragged beauty, or bleak intelligence -- celebrating the idea that the process and development of a song can sometimes be just as engaging as the "finished" product -- others simply unraveled into crumbs of little or no value. To Record Only Water for Ten Days, however, is made up of 15 "legitimate" songs. The whole is still quite simple -- stellar guitar work, impressive vocal range, drum machine, and minimal effects -- but it's a much healthier and "together" sound. Still a departure from the Peppers, To Record has an overall almost goth-like singer/songwriter vibe, at times colliding into rock catharsis. But Frusciante hasn't forgotten his shaky past, utilizing similarly abstract and slightly disturbed lyricism: "Where you go doesn't matter/Cuz there will come a time/When time goes out the window/And you'll learn to drive out of focus/I'm you and if anything unfolds/It's supposed to." Although most fans will no doubt be relieved that Frusciante has pieced his life back together, appreciators of the "falling apart" aspect of his past work might be disappointed by To Record's more accessible, less collapsible sturdiness. Even the look of the record is excessively clean, with a simple two-color design and all-caps block letters. ~ Melissa Giannini

"Hell and High Water" (09/30/2003) Rock & Pop Throttlerod, Smallstone RecordingsThrottlerod: Matt Whitehead (vocals, guitar); Bo Leslie (guitar); Chris Sundstrom (bass, background vocals); Kevin White (drums). Recorded at New Alliance Studios, Boston, Massachusetts. Personnel: Matt Whitehead (vocals, guitar); Chris Sundstrom (vocals); Bobbie Leslie, Andrew Schneider (guitar); Kevin White, Carl Plaster (drums). Audio Mixer: Andrew Schneider. Recording information: New Alliance Studios, Boston, MA. Photographer: Ashly Hutchens. It would be easy to lump Virginia by way of South Carolina transplants Throttlerod with the likes of southern stoned rockers Alabama Thunder Pussy or enigmatic groove masters Clutch. But with their second album, 2003's Hell and High Water, the band strikes upon a notably individualistic chord, honing their crunchy hard rock into a taught, unified wall-of-Les Paul. Let's just say that if guitar tone were everything, these boys would be headed for the Hall of Fame right now, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. More realistically, the fact is that with all the stoner rock nodding-off going on these days, Throttlerod's focused assault and admirable songwriting economy are clearly their greatest weapons. Sure enough, full-throttle album highlights such as "Suckerpunch," "In the Flood," and the especially memorable "Tomorrow and a Loaded Gun" are discharged like round after round from a two-barrel, allowing little room for taking cover in-between. Initially, the songs' shared high energy makes for an apparent sameness, but this quickly gives way to numerous distinctive moments, including the exceedingly groovy "No Damn Fool" and the soft/hard dynamics of "Whistlin' Dixie." When it's all said and done, the excessive jamming of 11-minute closer "Honest Joe" and the forgettable acoustic balladry of "Been Wrong" constitutes the only true lapses in concentration during this surprisingly cohesive set. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

"American Water" (10/20/1998) Rock & Pop Silver Jews, Drag CitySilver Jews: Stephen Malkmus, D.C. Berman, Tim Barnes, Michael Fellows, Chris Stroffolino. Recorded at The Rare Book Room, Brooklyn, New York. Personnel: Stephen Malkmus (guitar, background vocals). Recording information: Rare Book Room, Brooklyn, NY. Unknown Contributor Roles: David Berman; Chris Stroffolino; Mike Fellows; Stephen Malkmus; Tim Barnes . At their best, David Berman's songs have always provided a personal narrative framed by distinctly American pathos, indie-rock's equivalent of early Band folktales. AMERICAN WATER, the third full-length by Berman's Silver Jews, maintains that same songwriting focus, but it clearly betters 1996's NATURAL BRIDGE by bringing back what had previously been the Jews' secret weapon: Stephen Malkmus' guitar. SM's playing has always straddled the line between noise-invested atonality and candy-colored melodicism, invoking experimental freedoms and classic tunesmanship in singularly melancholy lines, dualities that fit Berman's songs to a T. On loosely written but deceptively wise profiles of Americana, the lyricist's images and the guitarist's notes intertwine to create something greater than the sum of its parts. It is a rural, rootsy sound full of punk's urban knowledge, but with far more credence paid toward a writer's turn of phrase and a sonic painter's improvisations than to any kind of folkie traditionalism. AMERICAN WATER plays as one generation's view of American society, jotted down in one's diary at a truckstop and at a tenement apartment.

Unknown Contributor Roles: Laura Rivers; Sister Rosa Lee Young; Sister Mary Wright; Annie Wilkes; Maggie Russell; Andrew Palmer. This four-disc set, drawn from the musical examples to Bernice Johnson Reagon's outstanding National Public Radio series on African-American gospel music, deals respectively with the concert tradition in spiritual singing, the 19th-century roots of African-American congregational singing, the pioneering composers, and community gospel. As ballet music lacks a dimension without the dance, the CDs lack a dimension without the powerful mind tying the whole thing together. And to have included some of the non-African-American roots Professor Reagon illustrated in the programs would also have made this more than just another fine gospel set. But "just another fine gospel set" is pretty fine in its own right. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music
