"On Earth as It Is in Hell" (04/20/2004) Rock & Pop Martyr AD, Victory Records (USA)Martyr A.D.: Drewhart, JJ Thrash, Sheer Tara, Chazmo, Karl. Unusually for a semi-major label like Victory, Martyr AD's second full-length release is completely straightforward Scandinavian-style death metal with few hardcore, emo, or pop influences. The Minnesota-based quintet, born out of the ashes of the late, lamented Disembodied with new singer Andy Hart screaming his best death-rattle bellow over Joel Johnson and Charlie Johnson's lockstep unison guitar riffs, deliver 12 concise, pummelingly hard tracks in just over 30 minutes, balancing the longer and more traditional songs with brief, even noisier interludes like the two-part "The Last Words of Any Meaning," which keeps the album from dragging the way that so many similar records do. The particular highlight is the corrosive speedcore blast "American Hollow," on which drummer Karl Hensel's double-bass pedal sounds like it was hooked up to a motor running at about 2000 rpm. A strong improvement over Martyr AD's debut, On Earth as It Is In Hell is about as good as American death metal gets. ~ Stewart Mason

"Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child" (08/13/2002) Heavy Metal Norma Jean (Rock), Solid StateNorma Jean: Joshua Scogin (vocals); Scottie Henry, Christopher Day (guitar); Joshua Doolittle (bass); Daniel Davison (drums). Additional personnel: Aaron Johnathan Weiss (vocals, piano, tambourine). Recorded at Zing Studio, Westfield, Massuchusetts between April 15 and May 5 2002. Personnel: Christopher Day (guitar). Recording information: Zing Studio, Westfield, MA. Photographer: David Stuart. Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child is the first outing since Luti-Kriss adopted the new name Norma Jean, due to constant confusion from certain venues who believed the band was the hip-hop MC Ludacris. While the band's old material showed great promise, few could have expected such a ferocious follow-up, as this is an album that can be described simply as audio chaos. Norma Jean follows no rhyme or reason, and bludgeons the listener with repeated blasts of macabre hardcore/metal that are as confusing as they are cataclysmic. While few bands could pull off placing a 15-plus-minute track in the center of an album, Norma Jean dares to be different, and manages to place "Pretty Soon, I Don't Know What, but Something Is Going to Happen" effectively without killing the album's momentum. The only real problem that arises on Bless the Martyr is that in all the commotion, Norma Jean tends to get lost amidst the carnage, involuntarily dragging songs on with no end in sight. Regardless of those mishaps, Norma Jean has patched together an intimidating album of gargantuan proportions. Killswitch Engage's Adam Dutkiewicz once again has gone above and beyond with his incredible production capabilities, somehow capturing all the mayhem these five men churn out without ever allowing the songs to appear muddy or noisy. It is a shame that shortly before the album's release half of the band abandoned ship, leaving the group's future in the hands of fate. ~ Jason D. Taylor

"Soul of the Martyr" (01/01/2006) Heavy Metal Benumb, Relapse Records (USA)Personnel: K Rob (guitar); John Gotelli (drums). Recording information: Fiesta Grande (01/1997-12/1997); House of Faith (01/1997-12/1997). Soul of the Martyr gets by largely on anger and adrenaline alone -- Benumb doesn't have anything new to say, but their songs are translated with such intensity and malice that it doesn't really matter. The CD contains a whopping 19 bonus tracks taken from hard-to-find singles, EPs and live recordings. ~ Jason Ankeny

"The Martyr Mantras" (07/23/1996) R&B Boy George, Virgin Records (USA)Personnel includes: Boy George (vocals); Jagdeep Singh (tabla, background vocals); Simeon Lister (saxophone); Jon Quarmby, Richard Cottle (keyboards); Colin Elliot (percussion). Personnel: Boy George (vocals); Derek Green, Radha, Beverly Skeetes, Helen Terry, Stefan Frank, Juliet Roberts, London Community Gospel Choir (vocals); Jonathan Quarmby, Richard Cottle (keyboards); Colin Elliot (percussion). Audio Mixers: Moss; Angela Dust; Mark Brydon; John Themis. Audio Remixers: Bruce Forest; Paul Wright ; Mark Brydon; Pascal Gabriel; Paul Oakenfold ; Paul Wright III; Simon Rogers. Illustrator: Tony Cooper. The Martyr Mantras is a collection of dance singles, presented in various remixes, that feature Boy George, along with several other vocalists, though the real star is the groove. This is deep house music, which is to say that the beat moves in a fast shuffle, surrounded by a prominent bass pulse. Now and then, George emerges from the tracks, notably on the near-ballad "I Specialize in Love," and on those occasions his usual virtues as a singer -- an aching, vulnerable tenor voice with a good rhythmic sense and clear articulation -- come to the fore. The oddest track is "Bow Down Mister," a celebration of Hinduism complete with chants of "Hare Krishna" and an ululating Indian singer. Elsewhere, the music is largely anonymous, if danceable. [In the U.K., The Martyr Mantras was credited to the group Jesus Loves You.] ~ William Ruhlmann
