"Disciples of the 36 Chambers: Chapter 1 [PA]" (09/28/2004) R&B Wu-Tang Clan, Sanctuary (USA)Wu-Tang Clan: GZA, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, RZA, Raekwon, U-God. Liner Note Author: Jon Caramanica. Wu-Tang Clan live shows have always been the stuff of legend--unfortunately, often for the wrong reasons. By 2004, an air of silence gathered over the Shaolin soldiers from Staten Island, as members clashed over record deals, and solo albums often lacked the trademark Wu-Tang guest appearances. Every denial of a break-up lent more credence to the worrisome notion that rap's premier extended family was parting ways. However, on July 17, 2004, Wu-Tang dispelled those rumors by coming together for a concert in San Bernadino, California, a performance captured on DISCIPLES OF THE 36 CHAMBERS: CHAPTER 1. They had been a long time apart, but when all nine original members of Wu-Tang Clan took the stage on that July day, they slipped right back into the group vibe. The atmosphere here is kinetic, as lyrics leap from one member to the next, and the charismatic crew flows with the greatest of ease from crowd pleasers "C.R.E.A.M.," "Method Man," and "Gravel Pit" to more obscure numbers, such as GZA's "Ghost Deini." The energy of a rap concert has been one of the most elusive spirits to capture on disc, but Wu-Tang's power pours out from this historic reunion.

"Legend of the Wu-Tang Clan: Wu-Tang Clan's Greatest Hits [PA]" (10/26/2004) R&B Wu-Tang Clan, BMG HeritageWu-Tang Clan: GZA, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, RZA, Raekwon, U-God, Cappadonna. Liner Note Author: Margeaux Watson. A best-of nice reminder of the excitement and genius that has made the Wu so enduring. Wu-Tang Clan records have always reflected the kaleidoscopic nature of the group itself, which consists of nine members, each with at least three identities of their own. It's no surprise, then, that Wu-Tang albums vibrate with the energy of a raucous crowd, as unpredictable rhymes gust back and forth. The collective of NYC-area rappers banded together as a unit to most effectively launch solo records, with 1993's ENTER THE WU-TANG (36 CHAMBERS) acting as the springboard. While many classic albums have emerged from the pact (including Method Man's TICAL and Ghostface Killah's SUPREME CLIENTELE), when the group comes together, something wonderfully chaotic ensues. Fittingly, Wu-Tang Clan's first hits record, LEGEND OF THE WU-TANG, has a wandering nature, with remixes thrown in haphazardly, adding to the anything-can-happen feel always surrounding the outfit. The album opens with the three tracks that began its reign, "C.R.E.A.M.," "Method Man," and "Protect Ya Neck," the latter two intriguingly reworked. Elsewhere, two of the unit's finest mid-career singles--"Triumph" and "Gravel Pit"--are placed back-to-back. As a whole, the collection is a reminder of the excitement and genius that has made the group so enduring.

"Wu-Tang Meets Indie Culture [PA]" (10/18/2005) R&B Think Differently, Babygrande RecordsThink Differently: GZA, Masta Killa, RZA, U-God. Personnel: Aesop Rock, MF Doom. Audio Mixer: Jose "Choco" Reynoso. Recording information: 36 Chambers Studio, New York, NY. It's taken a while for the Wu-Tang Clan to re-build the steam they had in the early 1990s, but this intriguing project, which pairs members of the Clan with underground hip-hop luminaries such as Aesop Rock, MF Doom, Sean P., Del tha Funky Homosapien, and others, should help the cause. Conceived by Wu cohort Dreddy Kruger, and with production from the RZA and new Wu producer Bronze Nazareth, among others, this is partially a family affair, and the classic Wu feel is all over these tracks--complete with spare yet high-minded beats and eerie loops. But it's the rotating roster of MCs that really makes this disc, with surprising pairings like Aesop Rock and Del tha Funky Homosapien on "Preservation," and the GZA and Rass Kass on "Versus" (one of the album's highlights). "Biochemical Equation" boasts a killer beat from the RZA, who also takes the mic to trade rhymes with MF Doom. A tribute to deceased Wu-Tang member Old Dirty Bastard evokes the ghost of the original Clan, but the overall flavor here is contemporary and fresh, with undercurrents of the classic sound that brought the original ruckus so many years ago.

"Enter The Wu Tang" (04/25/1994) R&B Wu-Tang Clan, RCA Records (USA)Wu-Tang Clan: Prince Rakeem "The RZA" (rap vocals, programming); The Method Man, U-God, Rebel Ins, Shallah Raekwon, Ghost Face Killer, Ol' Dirty Bastard, The Genius "The GZA," Masta Killa (rap vocals). Additional personnel: The 4th Disciple (scratches). Recorded at Firehouse Studio, New York. German issue features a bonus remix of "Method Man." The Wu-Tang Clan seemed to come out of nowhere when they released their first independent single, "Protect Ya Neck." To the industry's surprise, it sold over 10,000 copies and enabled this conceptually innovative crew to land a deal with RCA. ENTER THE WU-TANG (36 CHAMBERS) is the first effort to "take you on" the full "lyrical high" of the Wu-Tang--eight "killer bees" who stem from that forgotten borough of New York City, Staten Island. Prince Rakeem "The RZA" may dominate the loosely-based group's production chamber, but the success of the Wu-Tang should be credited to all. "Clan In Da Front" gives The Genius (aka "The GZA") the opportunity to prove to critics of his former solo career that he's far from played out. To the liking of many hardcore ruffnecks, "Shame On A Nigga" unites the Clan's most distinctive vocalists, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Method Man and Raekwon The Chef; and fellow members Inspector Deck, Ghost Face Killer and U-God join forces on the album's highlight, "Da Mystery Of Chessboxin'." Both cuts prove the Wu-Tang to be the most lyrically diverse rap group on the streets today. The Clan's alliances in the hip-hop community have already brought about crazy recognition to their brother-artists (The Gravediggaz, Shyheim aka The Rugged Child, Method Man's solo work), showing that the Wu-Tang's influence can be found in both the studio and the market-place. So, while they may have been dissed in previous incarnations, the Wu-Tang Clan understand that power comes from unity and that their's is far-reaching; or as they put it, "we form like Voltron."
