"Live at Wolf Trap" (09/28/2004) Rock & Pop Doobie Brothers (The), Sanctuary (USA)The Doobie Brothers: John McFee (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, pedal steel guitar, dobro, violin); Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston (vocals, guitar); Keith Knudsen (vocals, drums); Michael Hossack (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Guy Allison (vocals, keyboards); Skylark (vocals, bass guitar); Marc Russo (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Mic Gillette (trumpet, trombone); Marvin McFadden (trumpet); M.B. Gordy (percussion). Before the Doobie Brothers took over the AM airwaves in the late 1970s and early '80s with their slick, commercial soul-pop, they were a rocking boogie band with a feel-good vibe. The primary difference between the band's two incarnations was soulster Michael Macdonald, and this Macdonald-less line-up finds the band returning to its roots for an exciting live date. Recorded in 2004, LIVE AT THE WOLF TRAP presents a surprisingly energized Doobies in their original form. Moreover, there's a battery of old school Doobies classics on hand, including "Long Train Running," "Black Water," and "Listen to the Music." The concert is also available on DVD.

"Judy Collins Live at Wolf Trap" (11/14/2000) Rock & Pop Collins, Judy, WildflowerPersonnel: Judy Collins (vocals, guitar); Russell Walden, Mark Egan, Morris Goldberg, Tony Beard, Eric Weissberg. Recorded live at The Wolf Trap Foundation For The Performing Arts, Vienna, Virginia on June 18, 2000. Includes liner notes by Judy Collins. Personnel: Judy Collins (vocals, guitar). Audio Mixer: Alan Silverman. Liner Note Authors: Robert Aubry Davis; Judy Collins. Recording information: Wolf Trap Foundation For The Performing Arts, Vienna, V (06/18/2000). Photographer: Scott Suchman. Since leaving her long-term berth at Elektra Records in the mid-'80s, Judy Collins has made a couple of more stabs at major-label affiliation, but without re-igniting the kind of commercial appeal it takes to sustain such deals. Nevertheless, she has managed to make quite a few records, many of them fitting into niche categories -- Christmas albums, children's albums, etc. Live at Wolf Trap, released on her own Wildflower label, presents her standard concert repertoire. Recorded June 18, 2000, at the venerable Virginia outdoor auditorium where she has appeared regularly for decades, the show was also videotaped for a public television special. The 61-year-old singer, still in remarkably fine voice, gives her audience the songs they came to hear, her hits and signature tunes: "Someday Soon," "Both Sides Now," "Send in the Clowns," "Amazing Grace." Also included are some other songs she's been performing since the 1960s, her own composition "My Father," "Bird on a Wire," "Who Knows Where the Time Goes." She sings several traditional songs, harking back to her earliest days as an interpretive folk singer. (An a cappella "Danny Boy" is especially impressive.) And she performs a couple of worthy recent songs from her own pen, "Mountain Girl" and "Beyond the Sky." The arrangements are familiar, and though Collins takes occasional slight liberties with the melodies, she never disturbs listeners who have the original recordings burned into their memories. It's easy to cite songs that were left out ("Suzanne," "Chelsea Morning"), and it would have been nice if Collins had talked a little more, but it would be hard to part with anything here, so maybe such complaints are just a way of wishing this was a two-disc set. "Live at Wolf Trap" (12/15/1991) Folk McCutcheon, John, Rounder SelectPersonnel: John McCutheon (vocals, guitar, banjo, hammered dulcimer, piano); Tom Chapin (vocals, guitar); Pete Kennedy (guitar, bass); Paul Reisler (guitar); Bob Read (saxophone, clarinet); Gregory Gladkov (piano). Let's face it: A lot of the children's music that comes from the United States is appallingly bad. It is annoying and highly sophomoric, not to mention condescending -- it does kids a tremendous disservice by talking down to them. John McCutcheon feels the same way, which is why the folksinger has been providing intelligent children's music. Not everything McCutcheon does is children-oriented, but here's the thing: His children-oriented work is so intelligently done that it isn't all that different from the McCutcheon albums that aren't specifically aimed at kids. Live at Wolf Trap falls into the latter category, although a lot of parents bought it anyway because of his fine reputation in the children's market. Recorded live in Vienna, VA, in 1990 and 1991, this CD paints an attractive picture of McCutcheon as both a singer/songwriter and a performer of traditional folk repertoire. Some of the songs that he performs are in the public domain, including "The Water Is Wide" and "Stole and Sold from Africa." But plenty of McCutcheon originals are also performed, and they range from the reflective "High Hearts" to the playful "Black Sea." One of the nice things about McCutcheon is his awareness of the roots of Anglo-American folk -- he realizes that the folk traditions of the U.S. have their roots in the folk traditions of the British Isles. McCutcheon has blues influences, but he also has Welsh and Celtic influences. So even though the Wisconsin native is very much a part of Anglo-American folk, he is also well aware of his European musical heritage. Live at Wolf Trap falls short of essential, but it's still an enjoyable, satisfying document of the singer/songwriter's live performances. ~ Alex Henderson
