Hollywood, CA; Modular Music, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; The Coloring Book, Brentwood, TN; The Gas Station, Vancouver, Canada; Vanderock Studio, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Photographer: David Rose. One part George Winston, one part J. Crew model, Jim Brickman purveys easy-listening piano ballads with tender themes and upbeat lyrics. On this 2002 release the "love songs" of the title are not solely romantic in nature--they could easily be addressed to a child or even to God. And the "lullabies" are not just for children, but for adults in need of a soothing respite from the world. With the help of guest vocalist Amy Sky (and musical inspiration from J. S. Bach), lines from I Corinthians:13 become the graceful "Love Never Fails." The traditional children's song "I See the Moon" gets a sweet, lush treatment and a rare vocal turn from Brickman himself. Vocal group All-4-One gives its all on "Beautiful (As You)," a silky ballad that shares a hook with "The Greatest Love of All." The instrumentals--with titles like "Night Prayer," "Dreamland," and "Safe and Sound"--are all mid-tempo hymns of safety and comfort. While Brickman stands firmly in the pop music realm, his music inspires the same sense of wellbeing as many of the most acclaimed new age recordings.

"Spirit of Love: Devotional Chanting & Spiritual Love Songs" (09/21/2004) New Age Maya & Sage, Spirit Singer ProductionsPersonnel: Sage (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, celtic harp, Native American flute, harmonica, didjeridu, keyboards, drums, bongos, djembe, dumbek, rainsticks, bells, chimes); Maya (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, harmonium, keyboards, bells); Silvia Nakkach (vocals); Gary Regina (pennywhistle, soprano recorder, tenor recorder, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, C-melody saxophone); Rob Carpenter (trumpet); Geoffrey Gordon (harmonium, shaker, tabla); Solange Knowles (shaker). Audio Mixer: Sage. Recording information: Bear Creek Recording, Bonny Doon, CA; Spirit Singer Recording, Santa Cruz, CA. Photographer: Paul Schraub. Arranger: Maya. If the average new age fan were to encounter the debut album by Maya & Sage in a record store, the cover, Barry Stevens' painting, "Mandala 'Radiance'," which shows a man and a woman in traditional Indian style, likely would suggest to that potential buyer that the album Spirit of Love, subtitled Devotional Chanting & Spiritual Love Songs, was an album of contemplative music with a becalmed, ethereal tone. It is not. While Maya Knowles and her harmonizing husband Sage Knowles do sing repetitive phrases in Sanskrit at several points on the disc, notably the tracks "Jai Sita Ram" and "Lakshmi Ma," Spirit of Love is not really an album to meditate to. It's more an album to dance to, especially for fans of late-'60s pop music. With Maya's reedy voice and catchy tunes matched to Sage's folk-rock arrangements, the songs and performances recall several one-hit-wonder duos of the 1968-1969 period, Friend & Lover ("Reach Out of the Darkness"), Esther & Abi Ofarim ("Cinderella Rockefella"), and even Zager & Evans ("In the Year 2525"), who were both men. If these references are a little too obscure, imagine the Mamas & the Papas or Spanky & Our Gang singing in Sanskrit; there's some of that sunshine pop flavor here. Spirit of Love is likely to get its spiritual fans bopping around the ashram instead of sitting in the lotus position with their eyes closed; just don't buy it if you're looking to go into a trance that doesn't involve dancing. ~ William Rulhmann

"Love Songs" (04/13/1999) New Age Yanni, Private MusicIncludes a free Yanni calender. Personnel: Yanni (keyboards); Charlie Bisharat (violin); Charlie Adams (drums, percussion). Recorded between 1987 and 1993. Personnel: Charlie Bisharat (violin); Charlie Adams (drums, electronic drums, percussion). Composer/keyboardist Yanni is such a prolific artist that it behooves Private Music to bring together some of his finest moments for a compilation. He's such an unabashedly romantic artist that it seems only natural for such a compilation to be called LOVE SONGS, and to contain delicately constructed, lovingly performed pieces that convey a world of emotion without a single word being sung. Drawn from various Yanni albums from the late '80s to the mid '90s, LOVE SONGS unsurprisingly centers around the simple, melodic piano work of the Greek pop star, and the lush, emotive arrangements by which his melodies are surrounded. The mood is uniformly soft and dreamy, and will appeal to fans of contemporary instrumental pop along the lines of John Tesh and Jim Brickman.

"Love Songs & Lullabies [Japan Bonus Tracks]" (06/09/2003) New Age Brickman, Jim, BMG (distributor)Personnel includes: Jim Brickman (vocals, piano); Amy Sky, All-4-One, Jane Krakowski (vocals); Anthony Anderson, Dane Deviller (guitar); Tracy Silverman (violin, viola, keyboards); Thea Suits (flute). Producers: Jim Brickman, Anthony Vanderburgh, Tracy Silverman, Brian D. Stewart, Dane Deviller, Sean Hosein. Japanese version features five bonus tracks. S. The instrumentals--with titles like "Night Prayer," "Dreamland," and "Safe and Sound"--are all mid-tempo hymns of safety and comfort. While Brickman stands firmly in the pop music realm, his music inspires the same sense of wellbeing as many of the most acclaimed new age recordings. Although the enormously popular Brickman has long been known as a romantic piano sensation, a close study of his beautiful recordings has shown him to be a true fan of children's lullabies as well as pretty instrumental and vocal love songs. This time, he's unabashed about the role his piano may play in lulling children to beddy-bye. Most of the titles have a nocturnal theme and center around a slow, gentle tempo. "Little Stars" is a playful improvisation on "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," in fact. The one thing Brickman's fans have come to expect is consistency, and once again he delivers a handful of sweet, to-the-point melodies, mostly with solo piano. A few tracks feature Tracy Silverman, who plays violin on "Above the Clouds" and viola on "Night Prayer," and Brickman uses an orchestra for the first time on the gorgeous, lush "Course of Love" from TV's Guiding Light. Brickman has worked with a steady stream of top singers since the success of "Valentine," his hit with Martina McBride. This collection's offerings include tracks with the vocal group All-4-One, Amy Sky (a musical interpretation of 1 Corinthians 13), and actress Jane Krakowski. For variety and added intimacy, Brickman himself sings his adaptation of the whimsical kiddie tune "I See the Moon." Another extreme crowd-pleaser from one of contemporary music's most likable composers and performers. [A Japanese version included bonus tracks.] ~ Jonathan Widran
