"Buddha Lounge, Vol. 2" (08/07/2007) New Age Various Artists, Sequoia RecordsThis second volume of Buddha Lounge delivers another round of mildly intoxicating new age grooves, continuously mixed for maximum chill. But while there are some standout moments, the album is hampered by an overriding blandness. Almost exclusively instrumental, most of the 13 tracks sound basically the same, despite being from different Sequoia Records artists. Despite its reliance on Jan Hammer-style synthesizer beds, Ginko Garden does spice "Blossoms from India" with touches of tabla and traditional instrumentation, and Jaya Lakshmi's "Sundara," with its upbeat fusion of Latin and Indian styles, suggests the accessible worldbeat pop of Shakira. New age veterans, brothers, and founders of the Sequoia label, Steve & David Gordon contribute two pieces to Buddha Lounge, Vol. 2; neither is particularly noteworthy, offering familiar takes on the new age groove formula. Better is "Balance Dance," an individual Steve Gordon piece that features acoustic percussion, didgeridoo, and a spacy flute loop. It's like Euro-house during a power outage. But too much of Buddha Lounge, Vol. 2 is too creatively watered down for dance, yet too much of a worldbeat cocktail for the relaxation/meditation crowd. ~ Johnny Loftus This second volume of Buddha Lounge delivers another round of mildly intoxicating new age grooves, continuously mixed for maximum chill. "Medicine Buddha" (n/a) New Age Goldman, Jonathan, Spirit MusicThe Tibetan Buddhist meditative technique called Medicine Buddha practice invokes healing through visualization and mantra. The two long tracks on Jonathan Goldman's MEDICINE BUDDHA serve as powerful aids to this ancient method of physical and spiritual healing. The first selection, "Medicine Buddha Suite," layers chant, deep overtone singing and singing bowls. After about 10 minutes of this very grounding chorale, a danceable middle section emerges, offering a novel melding of Tibetan chant with Native American percussion and flute, before going back to the relatively sedate sound of the beginning. The second selection, "Heart of Wisdom Sutra" pairs a classic Buddhist mantra with celestial vocal harmonies. Throughout the 60-plus minutes of music on this album, Goldman both honors the traditional sounds of Tibetan chant and follows his muse to unexpected places. The result is a deeply felt and embracing soundtrack for meditation, ritual, or movement.

"Buddha Garden" (03/02/2004) New Age Parijat, New Earth RecordsPersonnel includes: Parijat (guitar, keyboards, percussion). Composer: Parijat. Authors: Osho; Parijat. German-born guitarist Parijat creates music that moves the heart and is in itself blissfully, intentionally repetitive, creating a sense of stillness. BUDDHA GARDEN's quiet themes center around a gently finger-picked nylon-string guitar with waves of synthesizer chords creating a mellifluous drone in the background. The canon-like structure of the songs echoes nature's cycles. This is used to great effect in "Returning Home," a sweetly melancholic piece that suggests the repetition of personal history and the eternal return to peace through spiritual redemption. "Subundallah," expresses some melodic, minor-key tension and raga-like intensity, using Indian percussion and a guitar played in a staccato, sitar-like manner. The album is book-ended by two versions of "Transience," a tranquil piece with a memorable repeating melody line. Its first instance is sparse and haunting, while "Transience II" is a lot more lush and insistent, suggesting that while our life stories are indeed both transient and cyclical, they gain in beauty on the retelling.

"Hotel Tara: The Intimate Side of Buddha-Lounge" (02/01/2005) New Age Various Artists, Sequoia RecordsPersonnel: Jaya Lakshmi (vocals). Audio Mixer: Steve Gordon. Liner Note Author: Steve Gordon. Illustrator: Zack Darling. David and Steve Gordon, the go-to compilers and DJs for the Sequoia label, are back with another thoroughly enjoyable and thematically questionable compilation of chillout groove music for the post-new age. Call it "mystical world groove" or "sensuous nu-global" music, but really, what it is is a three-way cross between worldbeat, ambient, and new age music. It avoids the new age label in part by being genuinely concerned with groove and in part by downplaying the facile, faux mysticism by which the most shameless of the new agers tried to spin simplistic straw into spiritual gold. But at the same time, those who appreciate the practical aspects of new age music (namely, the way it facilitates relaxation, meditation, and/or seduction) will find plenty to love in these Sequoia collections as well. Funky as they can get -- and they do get pretty funky at times -- they're never anything less than pleasant and gentle. Hotel Tara doesn't have anything to do with hotels, but it does feature a very cool surf-derived bassline on Ginkgo Garden's "Woodland Ride," a fun mix of faux Gregorian chant and found-sound space-mission dialogue on Joe Weineck's "Apollo 13," and the downright weird (but unimpeachably funky) "Radio Shamanistan" by Opera to Relax. Skip over the Gordon brothers' own "Enter the Sacred, Pt. 2" (note to the Gordons: using nature sounds to evoke the sacred is a cheap and tired gimmick), but linger a little over Jaya Lakshmi's gorgeous "Govinda Hari." Very nice overall. ~ Rick Anderson

"Maitreya: The Future Buddha" (07/26/2005) New Age Parsons, David (Sitar), Celestial HarmoniesLiner Note Author: David Parsons . Photographer: Kay Parsons. To paraphrase Linda Kohanov, all David Parsons CDs are highly recommended. Maitreya: The Future Buddha is no exception. It is pure spiritual music. Parsons has traveled the world in his continuing quest to broaden his knowledge of religious and spiritual tenets. In the liner notes, he states that he keeps coming back to Tibetan Buddhism. He -- jokingly -- refers to it as "Reader's Digest Hinduism." By that he means that he sees the teachings of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha and a Hindu prince, as cutting straight to the core of the tenets and beliefs. He composed these pieces to reflect those thoughts and feelings. He has the innate ability to translate those feelings and emotions to his music and, ultimately, to the listener. These seven compositions do that effectively and efficiently. The voluminous atmospheres surround listeners with love and serenity. A low and persistent drone carries the ebb and flow as the soundscape rolls along. Parsons is an elite performer and e-musician. He is in a league with Steve Roach, Robert Rich, and Constance Demby. ~ Jim Brenholts
