"Le Best of Cirque du Soleil" (09/21/2004) New Age Cirque Du Soleil, Cirque Du Soleil MusiqueThe Cirque Du Soleil acrobat troupe has used interesting musical soundtracks since their inception in the early 1980's. Now a multifaceted company, the various Cirque Du Soleil ensembles have released several albums documenting their music. On this 20th Anniversary Edition, listeners will be treated to compositions from many of their shows, including selections from SALTIMBANCO, ALEGRIA and others. Not surprisingly, "Egypte" from MYSTERE features the jingles of Egyptian tambourines, and Islamic scales from Northeast Africa. The only thing missing is the belly dancer. The Indonesian-flavored "Gamelan" from the show O vividly depicts Java and Bali. "Vocea" from VAREKAI is more of a Western pop tune, though it is not sung in English. Pulsating percussion and robust strings dominate this mix. Since LE BEST offers a smattering of music from around the world, this collection will give listeners an opportunity to hear the kind of musical diversity encouraged by the Cirque Du Soleil founders. Indeed, this compilation is as unique and multicultural as the performers and show designers themselves.

"Varekai (Sdtk)" (01/07/2003) New Age Cirque Du Soleil, RCA Victor Records (USA)Cirque du Soleil's 2002 stage production, VAREKAI ("Wherever" in Bohemian patois) is the story of a fallen angel who wanders the underworld with a series of strange guides. His salvation comes in part from realizing the oneness of all humanity. Fittingly, the album of the same name (this is not the exact score of the show) is a maelstrom of exotic electronica containing a multiversity of ethnic flavors. African djembe sidles up to Gypsy violin, French musette-style accordions sigh over Indonesian shakers, and the languages of the world are sung, chanted, and whispered to thrilling effect. "Funambul" ("tightrope walker" in French) makes haunting use of a variety of vocal tricks: goose-bump-inducing chorale singing, a lovely mezzo-soprano solo, a reoccurring spoken-word part, and mysterious child-like whispers. Other ethnic fusion highlights include the techno-Qawwali "Oscillum," and "Emballa," a highly infectious faux-Afro-Brazilian number. Inspired by gypsies and nomads, VAREKAI celebrates the wandering spirit in all of us.
