Cusco, under the watchful direction of Michael Holm, has once again managed to adopt traditional world music melodies and instrumentation into a Western Eurojazz sound with Apurimac II. Taking the music of the Andes, with its strong rhythms and ethereal flute sound, Holm has added the music of modern technology. The result is a near full orchestra of wonderful music with new depth and complexity without betraying its native roots, where Holm had found his inspiration. ~ MusD

"Apurimac" (1988) New Age Cusco, Virgin Records (USA)Personnel: Billy Lang (guitar); Michael Holm, Kristian Schultze (keyboards); Gunther Gebauer (bass); Tod Canedy (drums). Most listeners will wonder how a group of technically proficient Germans can create authentic South American music. On Apurimac, Cusco provides two possible answers (pick one): "Terribly" or "They can't." This is vapid superficial tripe. It has no merit. ~ Jim Brenholts Cusco's first US release is the band's celebration of the Amazon River, with plenty of Peruvian rhythms and panpipe sounds to set the mood. Their subsequent albums are variations on this theme. ~ Linda Kohanov

"2002" (06/02/1997) New Age Cusco, Virgin Records (USA)Cusco: Johan Daansen (guitar); Guiseppe Solera (flute, pan flute); Martin Spanner (oboe, English horn); K. Schultze (keyboards); The Munich Natural Sounds Ensemble (acoustic bass, wood). Recorded at D.I. Studio and Trixi Studio, Germany. Digitally remastered by Joseph Steiner, III (Quad Tech Studios, Los Angeles, California) and William Aura (Auravision, Ojai, California). Like the songs on its predecessor, 2000, these environmentally minded tunes were written for a series of German TV specials about the world's vanishing wilderness. However, don't expect mournful dirges--Cusco's exuberant world fusion pulses with life. Keyboard duo Mike Holm and Kristian Schulze enrich their usual blend of synth sounds with woodwinds and strings (courtesy of the Munich Natural Sounds Ensemble) and sweet pan flutes, resulting in an epic sound suitable for film. While 2000 featured songs inspired by various parts of the globe, 2002 focuses on the aboriginal experience, with compelling tracks like "Australia," "Didjeridoo," and "Ancient People."

"Cusco 2000" (06/02/1997) New Age Cusco, Higher OctaveCusco: Johan Daansen (guitar); Guiseppe Solera (flute, pan flute); Martin Spanner (oboe, English horn); Kristian Schultze (keyboards); Michael Holm. Additional personnel: Munich Natural Sounds Ensemble (strings, brass). Engineers: Frank Von Dem Bottlenberg, Roland Kusche. 2000 features music that accompanied a wildlife television series called "Sielmann 2000." Expanding their usual Native South American framework, German keyboard duo Cusco presents 10 songs celebrating Africa, Canada, and the wild creatures of the land and air. Composed for a series of early-1990s German TV specials about the global devastation of wildlife, these passionate songs take their rightful place alongside the engaging film scores of Tangerine Dream and Vangelis. The urgent "North Easter" is particularly compelling.

"The Best of Cusco" (02/18/1997) New Age Cusco, Virgin Records (USA)Cusco includes: Michael Holm, Kristian Schultze. Digitally remastered by William Aura. Despite their Amazonian name, Cusco is in fact the partnership of two Germans, composer Kristian Schultze and Michael Holm, who plays synthesizer. The two have put together numerous albums, regularly combining electronics and synth pan-flute with various elements of Western pop and classical music. They draw upon the indigenous musical traditions of the Amazon rain forest, including those of the Inca, Aztec, and Mayan civilizations. Their songs, including "Flying Condor" and the urgent "North Easter," often celebrate those cultures while simultaneously mourning an unforeseen catastrophe: the steady destruction of the natural environment by modern forces.
