"Papillon [Oreade]" (07/12/2005) New Age Kamal, Oreade MusicPersonnel: Kamal (bass guitar); Stephen Berry (guitar, 12-string guitar); Stephan Berry (12-string guitar); Cleis Pierce, Cleis Pierce (violin); Tony Buchanan (saxophone). Papillon -- Kamal's 11th release since 1989's Silhouette -- won a Dolphin Australia Award in 1997 for best ambient-new age music; it was the first for this prolific musician. Kamal is a multi-instrumentalist who uses his calming compositions to showcase his skills on udu, djembe, guitars, bass, and keyboards. The lush arrangements also feature a few guest artists, including Cleis Pierce, who adds a soaring violin to the title track. Each song highlights a different instrument playing the main melody, backed by warm synthesizers and guitars. The music itself is relaxing and contemplative, but Kamal keeps your attention focused by adding a strong backbone of percussion on all the tracks. ~ Susan Cruickshank

"Blue Dawn" (01/06/2004) New Age Kamal, Oreade MusicPersonnel: Kamal (guitar, keyboards, fretless bass, percussion). Photographer: Jutta Smeaton. Arrangers: Martin Oberschelp; Kamal. For this late 1980s recording, Australian composer Kamal incorporates not only his trademark array of keyboards, but also a cornucopia of guitar and percussion effects. Also, on certain tracks, listeners will notice the use of animal sounds such as crickets and fluttering birds. This is used primarily on "All the Cuckoos Dancing in the Mango Trees." This dreamy composition overflows with cascading keyboards and pastoral nature effects. This piece is also marked by a soft drum backbeat and keyboard simulated double bass. Other compositions such as "The Wind and the Sea" and "Monsoon Over Babaluma" are entrancing works that feature, not surprisingly, water and wind effects. The latter begins with thunder, rain, and distant keyboard rumbles. A bleak offering, this piece evokes the harshness of a storm. Yet, it ultimately illuminates the splendor of nature (even when nature is at its most turbulent). Indeed, BLUE DAWN is a meditation on the earth itself. This album brings to life the magnificence of this planet and encourages listeners to reconnect with their terrestrial roots.

"Shamanic Healing" (04/02/2002) New Age Kamal, New Earth RecordsPersonnel includes: Kamal (vocals, keyboards, percussion, chimes); Ghata (vocals); Om Hellenkamp (nay); Dr. Didge Dolphin (didgeridoo). On Kamal's best-selling album, earthy chants and synthesizer drones cavort with flutes that mimic exotic birdsong. Tribal percussion moves things along without disrupting the soothing quality of the sound. This aborigine-inspired trance music is an enlivening backdrop for conscious movement, meditation, relaxation, or the healing arts.

"Mistral [2004]" (01/06/2004) New Age Kamal, Oreade MusicPersonnel: Praful Schr?der (vocals, flute, soprano saxophone); M. "Kamal" Engels (acoustic guitar, keyboards, fretless bass, percussion, drum programming); Ariel Kalma (recorder, soprano saxophone). Arranger: M. "Kamal" Engels. MISTRAL sees Australian composer, Kamal, expanding upon his previous work. However, his keyboard-heavy approach has now been augmented by the use of acoustic instruments including soprano saxophone, flute, recorder, and other non-electric instruments. Without a doubt, these acoustic instruments add charm and poignancy to Kamal's music. For example, songs such as "Pastures of Plenty" benefit from Praful Schroder's smooth-toned saxophone musings. Schroder even manages to throw in a few blues licks on this tune. However, MISTRAL is still quite serene and pastoral. Plus, Kamal employs a variety of keyboard effects throughout. "Within A Rainbowed Sea" demonstrates Kamal's ability to create warm and fuzzy sounds with cold, synthetic instruments. For instance, the keyboard flute heard on this tune stands up well alongside Praful's real flute. In fact, it creates an interesting musical juxtaposition. The last track, "Ocean End" is nearly five minutes of pure ocean waves. This is a fitting conclusion to an album that ultimately seeks to bring peace and stillness to its listener.

"Silhouette" (01/06/2004) New Age Kamal, Oreade MusicSILHOUETTE is the debut album from German-born, Australia-based composer Kamal. Known for his colorful use of keyboards and electronic drums, these songs can be enjoyed as background music or simply as a backdrop for meditation. Like many other selections, "Shakuhaji Tales" is very atmospheric and ethereal. On this piece, long, vaporous chords dot the landscape, while other keyboard effects mimic the sound of water dripping. "Sundance" is much more upbeat and carefree. It features a keyboard flute, a funky rock beat, and assorted keyboard sounds which sparkle in the upper registers. For example, tiny bell chimes shimmer in between undulating flute phrases. In general, this song seems to hop in step like an indigenous Sundance itself. The last song "Goodnight" is more solemn. Again, a synthesized flute is used as the lead instrument and it is accompanied by washy keyboard strings. Despite the inorganic setting, this composition verges on neo-classical. One would guess that Kamal's training at the Robert Schumann Conservatory had a direct influence upon this piece.
