Montana: A Love Story by George Winston (CD - 10/12/2004)
Description:
"Montana: A Love Story" (10/12/2004) New Age Winston, George, RCA Victor Records (USA)Personnel: George Winston (piano). Recording information: 2004. George Winston has traveled far and wide since his early days working with mentor John Fahey. MONTANA: A LOVE STORY is part portraiture and part exploration into the sonic possibilities of the piano. This biographical sketch takes the listener through various signposts of Winston's past. "High Plains Lullaby" is a delicate pastoral rumination, while "The Mountain Winds Call Your Name" features imaginative flourishes that create images of the plains and open country. In addition to Winston's own compositions, the record also includes interpretations of traditional songs and the works of Sam Cooke, Leadbelly, and (oddly enough) Frank Zappa. George Winston's familiar sound is apparent throughout MONTANA: A LOVE STORY, making long-time admirers feel right at home. In equal measure, Winston summons expressive asides and forays into dissonance that are challenging, but always riveting, as the repertoire of this self-described "rural folk pianist" expands.
The Lover: The Love Poetry of Carl Sandburg by Michael Hoppe (CD - 01/23/2001)
"The Lover: The Love Poetry of Carl Sandburg" (01/23/2001) New Age Hoppe, Michael, Spring Hill MusicPersonnel includes: Heidi Fielding (vocals); Tim Wheater (spoken vocals); Kenton Youngstrom (guitar); Eugene Fodor, James Sitterly (violin); Martin Tillman (cello); Michael Hoppe (keyboards). Includes liner notes by Penelope Niven. Includes 28 page booklet. Tim Wheater, known primarily as a flautist and composer, uses his mellifluous speaking voice to read the love poetry of Carl Sandburg, backed by Michael Hoppe's dreamy piano and synth playing. The complexity of emotion in both the poetry and in Hoppe's compositions carries the collaboration. "The Unforgetting Heart" (which originally appeared, in a different arrangement, on Hoppe's album of the same name) spotlights some outstanding classical guitar work from Kenton Youngstrom, and three musical interludes showcase Heidi Fielding's unearthly soprano.

Love Is Space by Deva Premal (CD - 02/15/2000)
"Love Is Space" (02/15/2000) New Age Premal, Deva, White Swan RecordsPersonnel: Deva Premal (vocals, tanpura); Miten (vocals, acoustic guitar); Ella Zarum (vocals); Jai Uttal (wooden flute, harmonium, dotar); Kit Walker (piano, keyboards, programming); Marquinho Brasil (percussion). Producers: Kit Walker, Miten, Deva Premal. Recorded at Freehouse Studios, Fairfax, California. Often called the ?Chanteuse of Chant? by her fans, Deva Premal is a ubiquitous presence in yoga studios and spiritual centers across the globe. LOVE IS SPACE, the second release from Premal and her life-partner Miten, is a luscious treat of soothing vocals, surprising rhythms, and superb production. The couple met at an ashram in India so it is no surprise that all the tracks on LOVE IS SPACE are traditional mantras and Hindu chants. What makes Premal stand out among the growing field of chant music is her unique voice and Miten?s studio expertise. ?Om Shree Sache ? is a mantra usually chanted in a monotone with little thought to performance. Premal and Miten chose to record it like a great vocalist might, with breathy phrasing and unusual stresses swirling in atmosphere and the sound of a subtle rain stick. These liberties are exactly what make Premal so popular?and shocking. Traditionalists may find Premal?s adaptations scandalous, but most are won over by final result: reverent, beautiful music that holds true to the intent of the mantras. This music is excellent for yoga, meditation, and healing work in addition to listening for pleasure.

Love Songs & Lullabies by Jim Brickman (CD - 08/06/2002)
"Love Songs & Lullabies" (08/06/2002) New Age Brickman, Jim, Windham Hill RecordsPersonnel includes: Jim Brickman (vocals, piano); Amy Sky, All-4-One, Jane Krakowski (vocals); Anthony Anderson, Dane Deviller (guitar); Tracy Silverman (violin, viola, keyboards); Thea Suits (flute). Producers: Jim Brickman, Anthony Vanderburgh, Tracy Silverman, Brian D. Stewart, Dane Deviller, Sean Hosein. One part George Winston, one part J. Crew model, Jim Brickman purveys easy-listening piano ballads with tender themes and upbeat lyrics. On this 2002 release the "love songs" of the title are not solely romantic in nature--they could easily be addressed to a child or even to God. And the "lullabies" are not just for children, but for adults in need of a soothing respite from the world. With the help of guest vocalist Amy Sky (and musical inspiration from J. S. Bach), lines from I Corinthians:13 become the graceful "Love Never Fails." The traditional children's song "I See the Moon" gets a sweet, lush treatment and a rare vocal turn from Brickman himself. Vocal group All-4-One gives its all on "Beautiful (As You)," a silky ballad that shares a hook with "The Greatest Love of All." The instrumentals--with titles like "Night Prayer," "Dreamland," and "Safe and Sound"--are all mid-tempo hymns of safety and comfort. While Brickman stands firmly in the pop music realm, his music inspires the same sense of wellbeing as many of the most acclaimed new age recordings.
The Power of Love by John Tesh (CD - 06/04/2002)
"The Power of Love" (06/04/2002) New Age Tesh, John, Word EntertainmentRecorded at Martinsound Studios, Alhambra, California. THE POWER OF LOVE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Album. This two-CD set of easy-listening love songs features Tesh on piano, backed by a 60-piece orchestra. The romantic ballads come from both the New Age realm (Enya's "Watermark," Yanni's "After the Sunrise") and the pop music world (Richard Marx's "This I Promise You", Shania Twain's "From This Moment On"), with two tuneful originals thrown in for variety. The approach works best when the arrangement transmutes the original; it's fun to hear George Winston's sparse piano ballad "Longing/Love" get the full orchestral treatment, or to hear a Kitaro song, composed for synthesizer, rendered with real violins, cellos, and dramatic symphonic percussion. Tesh has built a career on fusing old-fashioned pop sensibilities with the New Age sound. This collection will please fans of both camps.

Ascend to Love by Ray (New Age) (CD - 05/07/2002)
"Ascend to Love" (05/07/2002) New Age Leonard, Ray, Ray Leonard RecordsProducers: Ray Leonard, Suzanne Doucet. Recorded at Lone Oak Studio, Stevenson Ranch, California. Includes liner notes by Randall Davis. Opening with the delightful chatter of a happy child, ASCEND TO LOVE sweeps you along immediately in its upward climb. A celestial drone, simple keyboard tones, bass lines you can swim in, and major-key chord changes create a mood of hope and healing. Ray (A.K.A. Ray Leonard) plays all the synthesizers on the album and creates his own beautiful, sheltering universe of sound. Things turn slightly darker with "Twilight Vista," a somber, Bach-like piece for organ, and the slinky "Passage" aims not so much for the heart but for the hips. These two songs add some welcome variety, but for the most part Ray sticks to pure tones that tunnel right through to the core of being, evoking stillness and utter calm.

Planet Love [Digipak] by Sudha (CD - 06/15/2004)
"Planet Love [Digipak]" (06/15/2004) New Age Sudha, Malimba RecordsPersonnel include: Sudha (various instruments); Maneesh De Moor (keyboards, percussion, programming); Mark Peters (bass instrument). Recording information: MDM Sound, Amsterdam, Holland (2004). Soothing and low-key, like environment-enriching background music, this recording is also musically intriguing. Sudha's PLANET LOVE combines the lush atmospheres of synthesizer-generated ambient music with gentle rhythms and vocal melodies that draw on traditional music from around the globe. The influence of Indian scales and motifs, Native American chants, and Celtic folk songs can be heard throughout, which each element blended smoothly into a readily accessible sound. There are no lyrics to distract from the atmospheric textures. The melodies are largely wordless vocalizing, creating a gauzy thread that extends across a web of percussion, programming, and various exotic instruments. PLANET LOVE is a winning combination of the global fusion, electronica, and new age genres.
