"OM Mani Padme Hum" (02/24/2004) New Age Siebert, Buedi, Real Music RecordsOne of the most potent mantras, Om Mani Padme Hum contains the entire wisdom of the Buddhist teachings in a single phrase. It is essentially a reminder to oneself that compassion and "benevolent emptiness" can cut through the illusions that create suffering. Here, multi-instrumentalist Buedi Siebert offers four musical interpretations of the mantra, as well as eight other peaceful, meditation-enhancing instrumentals. Some of the tracks feature Siebert's flute--bird-like, searching--and others focus on the chanting. The stunning "Lotus Call Part 1 (Vajra Guru Mantra)" needs little else but its basso profundo throat-singing and minimal musical backing. It's been said that just listening to chants can have the same mind-soothing benefits as actively chanting. Whether listeners choose to participate or just bask in the sound, OM MANI PADME HUM is a great place to start to connect with power of mantra.

"OM Yoga Mix" (03/18/2003) New Age Various Artists, Dharma MoonThis is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Cyndi Lee. With the help of the record label Dharma Moon, Cyndi Lee (founder of the Om Yoga Center in New York) is the yoga mastermind behind this ideal workout compilation. Lee has a preference for driving beats and the world-fusion flavors of her husband, David Nichtern, along with other artists such as Michael Hewett, Drala, and Steve Gorn. Tested by Lee's yoga students, these selections, overall, have a buoyant tone that merges Eastern elements with the rhythms of Western rock. Nichtern's "In Praise Of" incorporates strumming acoustic and electric guitar, organ, Indian vocals and tabla that playfully mingle and meander. Meanwhile, Drala's "Moment to Moment," featuring Gorn's hypnotic bansuri flute, kicks it up a few notches in pace. Also featured in this program is Cyndi Lee herself, reciting the "Dedication of Merit Chant." The result is an energy--and contentment--boosting program.

"Ultimate OM" (07/10/2007) New Age Goldman, Jonathan, Spirit MusicPersonnel includes: Jonathan Goldman, Alec Sims (vocals). Recorded at Spirit Studio, Boulder, Colorado. Includes liner notes by Jonathan Goldman. Personnel: Jonathan Goldman (unknown instrument). Additional personnel: Andi Hilgret (unknown instrument). Jonathan Goldman, a sound healing pioneer and chant master, has created a startlingly simple yet powerful piece of music with THE ULTIMATE OM. The album consists of one hour-long track featuring over 100 voices all chanting "Om," an ancient sound that is believed to be the source of all creation. Goldman created his CD using live voices and studio overdubs, incorporating healing acoustics and overtone vocals that Goldman pioneered during his years of psycho-acoustic study. THE ULTIMATE OM features deep resonating voices and harmonizing drone sounds that induce a calm, trance-like state. This is intended to get the body in harmony with itself and, over time, with the vibrations of the universe. This seemingly esoteric theory gains credence after reading the informative and fascinating liner notes, written by Goldman especially for this recording. In the notes, Goldman explains that the entire universe is in a state of vibration. When a person is in "sound mind and body," he is actually in harmony within himself and the universe. As the director of the Sound Healing Association, a non-profit group dedicated to education and awareness of sound and music healing, Goldman teaches and lectures all over the world. THE ULTIMATE OM is recommended for meditation, calming stress, and centering the mind and body.

"OM-the Sound of Hinduism" (12/15/2004) New Age Watts, Alan, Collectors' Choice MusicPersonnel: Alan Watts (vocals); Vincent Delgado (various instruments). Alan Watts was known best as a lecturer and radio narrator who tried to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western thought. This classic Watts album captures his infectious excitement and his non-nonsense style. Watts discusses the nature of Hinduism in this interesting mix of narration, tampura (an Indian stringed instrument), and tabla (drums). On the first track, with the tampura's hypnotic drone as an acoustic accompaniment, Watts discusses the true nature of identity and asks the listener to break down a life of illusion, to stop hiding and define his or her true identity. On the second track, apparently geared for meditation and introspection, three notes on the tampura are played repeatedly, like the constant in-and-out flow of breath. Finally, on the third track, Watts returns to read from Hindu scriptures, ancient texts that are remarkably instructive and comforting about the interconnectedness of the universe.
