"Autumn" (08/21/2001) New Age Winston, George, Windham Hill RecordsSolo performer: George Winston (piano). Recorded on June 19-20, 1980. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Solo performer: George Winston (piano). Producers: William Ackerman, George Winston, Howard Johnston, Cathy Econom. Engineers: Hans Soper, Russell Bond, Howard Johnston. Principally recorded on June 19-20, 1980. Includes liner notes by George Winston. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. AUTUMN was superstar new age pianist George Winston's first album to sell more than 1,000,000 copies. Listening to these spare, emotionally rich pieces, it's easy to understand why. But it's also clear what sets Winston apart from the hordes of other new age piano soloists: an insistent--occasionally even jarring--gothic sensibility that informs his music. Like many of his albums, AUTUMN found its inspiration in the seasonal changes wrought upon the Montana landscape that Winston calls home. Though it might be easy to pigeonhole a composition like "Woods" as easy listening, a more careful examination reveals a darker--daresay even sinister--underside, one more informed by Birnam Wood than by Hundred Acre Wood. "Stars" may bring forth images of cloud-free starlit skies, but its stirring emotionalism yearns for something more, making it difficult for a listener not to contemplate the infinitesimally small stature of human existence within an infinitely vast universe. "Live at the Acropolis" (10/11/2005) New Age Yanni, Legacy RecordingsLIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS is available in CD and DVD versions in the boxed set YANNI: THE PRIVATE YEARS, which also includes the CDs IN MY TIME, REFLECTIONS OF PASSION, IN CELEBRATION OF LIFE and DARE TO DREAM. Personnel includes: Yanni (piano, keyboards); Shardad Rohani (conductor, violin); Karen Briggs (violin); Julie Homi, Bradley Joseph (keyboards); Ric Fierabracci (bass); Charlie Adams (drums); Michael "Kalani" Bruno (percussion). Recorded live at the Herod Atticus Theatre, Athens, Greece on September 25, 1993. Personnel includes: Yanni, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Recorded live at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece on September 24th, 1993. Includes backstage footage and interviews with Yanni. Personnel: Yanni (vocals, guitar); Karen Briggs , Shardad Rohani (violin); Julie Homi, Bradley Joseph (keyboards); Ric Fierabracci (bass guitar); Charlie Adam (drums); Michael Bruno (percussion). Yanni has enjoyed sensational success over the past several years with his lush, densely layered, new age orchestrations. But the Greek keyboardist/composer's overtly romantic musings achieve a bold new dimension when augmented by a full symphony orchestra, and some of the more rhythmic elements in his music, previously masked under a wall of synthesizers, come to the fore--and the resulting music is much closer to progressive rock (and his own native roots) than new age. Thus we have distinctly Greek rhythmic cycles (in seven) keying the variations on the opening "Santorini" and "Keys To The Imagination," richly colored by percussion fanfares and instrumental breaks--demonstrating that the breadth of Yanni's music and his interest in popular forms is greater than many of his diehard fans have grown to expect. And on an arrangement like "The Rain Must Fall," Yanni frames his boleroesque piano shadings against a mysterious backbeat and fretless bass, which soon develops into--of all things--an R&B-styled slap bass groove. But those fans drawn to the purely lyric side of Yanni's art won't be disappointed by the composer's programming on YANNI LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS. Such keyboard-inflected fantasias as "Reflections Of Passion," "One Man's Dream" and "Until The Last Moment" illustrate Yanni's sentimental yearnings, while the Oriental flourishes of "Swept Away" demonstrate why he's achieved such an immense following among adult contemporary listeners.

"The Ultimate Jesse Cook" (10/25/2005) International Cook, Jesse, NaradaUltimate Jesse Cook doesn't give fans any bonus material, not even the DVD content so popular with mid-2000s retrospectives. But, while it skimps on the extras, the two-disc, 26-song set is a perfect abstract of the guitarist's work for Narada. The 2004 live recording, Montr?al, only gets one track ("Closer to Madness"), but Cook's five studio albums are all represented well. The set isn't chronological, but by mixing the songs up, Ultimate Jesse Cook heightens the crossroads quality of Cook's music. In one moment he's a flamenco master, the next a new age interpreter, and he explores Arabic sounds with just as much ease, and while Cook isn't afraid to streamline his influences for the sake of pop accessibility, he's respectful of them, too. For instance, the new age side of his sound never overtakes his curiosity and virtuosity as a guitarist and bandleader. Sometimes breezy synthesizers, and occasionally a percussion instrument, feel "painted in" for effect rather than meaning, but that's rare, and as he's proven over the years with Narada, Jesse Cook offers fusion, subtlety, and most of all evocative playing. Collection highlights include Tempest's title track, "Early on Tuesday" (featuring Sammy Llanas from BoDeans), Freefall's propulsive "Switchback," the organic/digital play of "Byzantium Underground," and the memorable Cajun touches in "That's Right." ~ Johnny Loftus

"Winter into Spring" (04/09/2002) New Age Winston, George, Windham Hill RecordsProducers: George Winston, William Ackerman. Recorded at Different Fur Recording, San Francisco, California in March 1982. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Producers: George Winston, William Ackerman. Recorded in March 1982. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. In a sense, this second seasonal album follows an opposite direction from Autumn, its hard, isolated notes and stop-and-start style gradually giving way from the stasis of winter to the growth and movement of spring. It's a good album for beginning your day. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Summer: Special Edition [Digipak] [Remaster]" (08/30/2005) New Age Winston, George, Windham Hill RecordsSolo performer: George Winston. Producers: Howard Johnston, Cathy Econom, George Winston. Includes a bonus track. Enhancements include printable/viewable sheet music. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: George Winston (piano). George Winston has long been celebrated for his major contributions to New Age music. A highly creative pianist, Winston showcases both his compositional acumen and keyboard skill on this 1991 concept album. SUMMER opens with the whimsical "Living in the Country," a joyous paean to rural life. On this selection, Winston mixes an Aaron Copland-influenced melody with gently sloping arpeggios. Winston again employs a simple folk melody on "Early Morning Range," but unlike the former, this tune bends in the direction of modern pop. The upbeat western "Goodbye Montana Pt. 1" contrasts with "Goodbye Montana Pt. 2." Unlike its counterpart, the second movement is slow and dreamy. Yet, both retain that thousand-mile stare across the plains at high noon. This album might be a tribute to summer, but it equally honors the great expanses of the American West. The last composition, "Where Are You Now" is the finest example of Winston's more dramatic side. Strongly imagistic, SUMMER takes the listener on a distinctly American journey of joyous wanderings and contemplative ballads.

"Fresh Aire 7 [Remaster]" (08/29/2005) New Age Mannheim Steamroller, American Gramaphone RecordsMannheim Steamroller: Chip Davis (conductor, upright bass); Bobby Jenkins (oboe, English horn); Jackson Berkey (harpsichord). Additional personnel: Caroline Ashton (vocals); Arnold Roth, Fox Fehling, Adrisn Gola, Joseph Golan, Lawrence Golan, Marlou Johnston, Peter Labella, Samuel Magad, Laura Miller, Blair Milton, Everett Mirsky, Gail Salvatori (violin); Martin Abrams, Catherine Brubaker, Li-Kuo Chang, Roger Moulton, Daniel Strba, Robert Swan (viola); Leonard Chausow, Victoria Mayne, Walter Preucil, Kim Scholes, John Sharp, Gary Stucka (cello); Stephen Hartman (harp); Bobby Jenkins (oboe, English horn); Dale Clevenger, Alice Render-Clevenger, Mary Gingrich, James Smelser (French horn); Donna Deam, Karen Kerslake, Simone Mace, Jo Maggs, Jocelyn Miles, Rachel Platt, Alison Smart, Penny Stow, Clare Wallace, Nicola Barber, Peter Gritton, Phyllida Hancock, Mary Hitch, Frances Jellard, Susanna Spicer, Mark Le Brocq, Harvey Brough, Andrew Gant, Paul Gordon, Angus Smith, Jeremy Taylor, Mike Chambers, Charles Gibbs, Don Greig, Andrew Hammond, Patrick Lee-Browne, James Ottaway, Charles Pott (background vocals). Engineers include: John Boyd, Bill Bradley, Campbell Hughs. Principally recorded at Sound Recorders, Omaha, Nebraska and Universal Studios, Chicago, Illinois. Includes liner notes by Chip Davis. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The FRESH AIRE series is divided into two parts. The first four albums are explorations of the seasons of the year, while albums five through eight examine human curiosities and obsessions, whether it be the quest for the moon (FRESH AIRE 5) or the concept of infinity (FRESH AIRE 8). As conceived and composed by Mannheim's Chip Davis, FRESH AIRE 7 may be the most mathematically involved album in the series, examining in full algorithmic detail the power of the number seven. Rainbows, astrology, alchemy, and spiritual power--all are based heavily on the power of seven, and all receive full consideration here. Tracks 6 through 12 are meditations upon each of the seven chakras, or energy centers of the body, which deal with various needs, functions, and desires, such as sex, love, and survival. Track seven, dealing with the Svadhisthana chakra, or the center of sexual functions, is tense, suggesting pursuit, while track nine's soothing keyboards suggest the unconditional love arising from the fourth chakra.

"Greatest Hits" (05/04/2004) New Age Brickman, Jim, Windham Hill RecordsPersonnel: Jim Brickman (piano); Jim Brickman (vocals); Bruce Watson (guitar); Ludvig Girdland (violin); David Grow (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Dorian Crozier, Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Cliff Bemis (background vocals); Mark Schultz , Roch Voisine (vocals); Collin Raye, Dave Koz, Jordan Hill, Laura Creamer, Martina McBride, Michael W. Smith, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Susan Ashton, Billy Porter. Audio Mixer: Curt Schneider. Photographer: Kevin Merrill. At the 10-year mark of his career, easy-listening instrumentalist Jim Brickman released GREATEST HITS, a collection that fittingly encompasses the various high points from his career thus far. A gifted pianist with a sprightly touch, he has garnered numerous awards since scoring with his first soaring instrumental hit, "Angel Eyes." Along the way, Brickman engaged in the collaborative process whenever he could, despite primarily being a solo performer. Never one to limit himself, the Ohio native often transcended genre in looking for potential collaborators and, as a result, he's worked with some very recognizable names in light jazz, contemporary country, and Christian music. Among his most notable musical guests are country singer Martina McBride (the sweet "Valentine"), Christian pop icon Michael W. Smith (a testimonial "Love of My Life"), and saxophonist Dave Koz (the Kenny G-flavored "Partners in Crime"). There's also the Dove Award-winning "The Gift" (featuring Collin Raye and Susan Ashton), the Olympic theme "Hero's Dream," and a pair of new songs--the yearning "'Til I See You Again" (with Mark Schultz) and the inspirational "My Love Is Here" (featuring Roch Voisine).

"Montana: A Love Story" (10/12/2004) New Age Winston, George, RCA Victor Records (USA)Personnel: George Winston (piano). Recording information: Sheridan Opera House, Telluride, CO. George Winston has traveled far and wide since his early days working with mentor John Fahey. MONTANA: A LOVE STORY is part portraiture and part exploration into the sonic possibilities of the piano. This biographical sketch takes the listener through various signposts of Winston's past. "High Plains Lullaby" is a delicate pastoral rumination, while "The Mountain Winds Call Your Name" features imaginative flourishes that create images of the plains and open country. In addition to Winston's own compositions, the record also includes interpretations of traditional songs and the works of Sam Cooke, Leadbelly, and (oddly enough) Frank Zappa. George Winston's familiar sound is apparent throughout MONTANA: A LOVE STORY, making long-time admirers feel right at home. In equal measure, Winston summons expressive asides and forays into dissonance that are challenging, but always riveting, as the repertoire of this self-described "rural folk pianist" expands.

"Pure Jim Brickman" (05/23/2006) Rock & Pop Brickman, Jim, Windham Hill Jazz (USA)Personnel: Jim Brickman (piano); Thea Suits-Silverman (flute); David Benoit (piano). Much like his contemporary George Winston, Jim Brickman has released a series of quiet, contemplative solo piano albums on the new-age label Windham Hill. Brickman's light, lyrical touch and lovely melodic compositions have earned him a dedicated following, and this well-selected Windham Hill sampler proves why. PURE JIM BRICKMAN collects 16 of the pianist/composer's most soothing tracks, focusing on the creation of gentle, mood-enhancing atmospheres. Solo instrumental pieces alternate with soft jazz excursions and the occasional duet (on "Glory," for example, where Brickman is joined by David Benoit, and "Amazing Grace," which features vocalist Ginny Owens). The set acts as a strong introduction to Brickman's aesthetic, and should also satisfy anyone seeking pleasant, relaxing music.

Director: Sandy DelRio. Photographer: Sandra Johnson. Unknown Contributor Role: Nashville String Machine. Arrangers: Dan Shea; Michael Epstein; Michael Epstein; Ronn Huff. Jim Brickman's accomplished composing and piano playing paint a musical picture that remains in some way a constantly blank canvas, always open to the listener's interpretations. The songs on PICTURE THIS, his third album, have the simple, memorable melodies and easy catchiness of pop music, but also a potent sense of emotion and intimacy. Country singer Martina McBride joins Brickman on "Valentine," which features the utterly unpretentious and unapologetically romantic lyrics, "Even if the sun refused to shine/Even if romance ran out of rhyme/You would still have my heart until the end of time." Overall, PICTURE THIS is a move toward a renewed optimism and openness for Brickman, who in the past has delved into a sense of deep melancholy to create his touching compositions. There is still a hint of this moodiness here, particularly on "Edgewater," which haunts the listener with its note of bittersweet nostalgia and its delicate oboe harmony.

"Pianoscapes: The Deluxe Edition" (06/18/2002) New Age Jones, Michael (New Age), NaradaMichael Jones plays piano without accompaniment. Recorded at Manta Sound, Toronto, Canada in April 1985. This deluxe edition of PIANOSCAPES features the original version recorded in Michael Jones' home studio plus 3 previously unreleased recordings. Personnel: Michael Jones (piano); David Darling (cello); David Lanz. Includes liner notes by Michael Jones. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Liner Note Author: Michael Jones . Pianoscapes was technically the first album on Narada, one of the top new age contemporary instrumental labels in the U.S., of Jones's solo piano improvisations. Jones's playing has a carefree quality grounded in classical impressionistic form and technique. His pieces breathe and pulse as if they were a part of you, pause for introspection (the somber passage of "Daybreak"), then resolve with glistening clarity. The overall tone is gentle, tender at times, but without being surface or trite. The music is very easy to let go into the background, yet it will pull you to notice soul-stirring passes of exquisite beauty and introspection. ~ Carol Wright Pianoscapes: The Deluxe Edition reissues Michael Jones' 1985 work in a lavish double-disc set, gathering the original 87-minute set with some previously unreleased versions of compositions that ended up on the following album, Sunscapes. The flowing, immediate nature of pieces like "Tapestries," "Dancing Waters," and the title track makes sense, considering that Jones recorded the entire work in in one take at his home studio; even more impressive is the album's gentle warmth when compared to the often chilly, saccharine feel of many solo piano new age works released more than 15 years after Pianoscapes. Fortunately, the deluxe edition's remastering sacrifices none of the album's intimacy. While earlier versions of the Sunscapes material -- "Echoes," "On the Road," and "Night Wind" -- aren't strikingly different than the finished pieces, they're a more than welcome addition, bringing this collection to nearly two hours' worth of relaxing yet complex piano instrumentals. As both the first Narada release and one of the definitive and most successful solo piano albums, Pianoscapes: The Deluxe Edition gives Michael Jones' groundbreaking work the treatment it deserves. ~ Heather Phares

"Nightbird" (01/15/2002) New Age Yanni, BMG Special ProductsPersonnel includes: Yanni. Personnel: Yanni (piano, keyboards). This collection of rare and never before released recordings by Yanni sparkles with imagination and flair and is sure to put a pulse in the bloodstream of even the casual listener. Being a skeptic, one will find a soothing yet orchestral wonder within the framework of each of Yanni's recordings. Ranging from a variety of instruments, the pianist/composer extraordinaire continues to bring charm and romance to life in his art. Presented here on Nightbird are seven dramatic and scintillating recordings, good for morning rise, airplane trips, car travel, and dreamy night escapades. "Nightbird" radiates with scorching guitars and bouncy conga percussion. Throughout the record is Yanni's assertive direction and piano lines. "Chasing Shadows" is a murky, haunting number dealing with the lives of those too quick on their feet, not giving themselves enough time to slow down, enjoy life and catch up with their shadow, and enjoying one's true sense of self. "Dance with a Stranger" leaves the listener to ponder about chance encounters and failed romances, or should-have-beens, to the excitement and anticipation of a new love interest. The plethora of instruments and sounds used in this record is mind-boggling, and it's fun for the listener just to sit back, kick up their feet, and dream through all the different impressions and colors of sound and timbre. Yanni does it again successfully, with gripping yet soothing, reflective music for the underpaid, overworked person at the end of the day. ~ Shawn M. Haney
