"Pure Jim Brickman" (05/23/2006) Rock & Pop Brickman, Jim, Windham Hill Jazz (USA)Personnel: Jim Brickman (piano); Thea Suits-Silverman (flute); David Benoit (piano). Much like his contemporary George Winston, Jim Brickman has released a series of quiet, contemplative solo piano albums on the new-age label Windham Hill. Brickman's light, lyrical touch and lovely melodic compositions have earned him a dedicated following, and this well-selected Windham Hill sampler proves why. PURE JIM BRICKMAN collects 16 of the pianist/composer's most soothing tracks, focusing on the creation of gentle, mood-enhancing atmospheres. Solo instrumental pieces alternate with soft jazz excursions and the occasional duet (on "Glory," for example, where Brickman is joined by David Benoit, and "Amazing Grace," which features vocalist Ginny Owens). The set acts as a strong introduction to Brickman's aesthetic, and should also satisfy anyone seeking pleasant, relaxing music.

"Windham Hill Chill, Vol. 2" (12/16/2003) New Age Various Artists, Windham Hill RecordsThis is part of "Windham Hill Chill" series. Photographer: Nancy Simmerman. WINDHAM HILL CHILL 2 is a beautifully packaged, two-disc set that collects music from Windham Hill artists into a DJ-sequenced, continuous mix. While the first disc is entitled Ambient and the second is entitled Acoustic, each exemplifies its respective genre through the musical kaleidoscope of Windham Hill artists. Often called "the original ambient label," Windham Hill favors strong performances and mature songwriting over scratchy beats and drumloops. Case in point, the Ambient disc features such artists as Tangerine Dream, who contribute the classic "Twin Soul Tribe," and Yanni, whose "In the Mirror" adds a soulful piano interlude to the mix. In contrast, Lili Haydn's "The Longing" is a slinky synth-heavy track that adds a cutting edge to the collection. Disc two, Acoustic, features heavyweights like Michael Hedges, George Winston, and Leo Kottke. Unexpected gems are provided by the Irish group Nightnoise, who offer a bit of Celtic atmosphere with their pastoral "Windell," and harpist Lisa Lynne who performs the delicate and charming "Welcome."

"A Windham Hill Christmas: The Night Before Christmas" (10/25/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Legacy RecordingsThe collection The Night Before Christmas is exactly what one would expect from Windham Hill: mellow, new age instrumental versions of familiar Christmas songs. Artists include Jim Brickman, Alex de Grassi, Liz Story, George Winston, and a number of others. Songs include the familiar -- "Silent Night," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," and "Cherry Tree Carol" -- and the less familiar -- "Walking in the Air" and "The Green Trees of Winter." One piece that stands out in this album's context is "Morning Has Broken." What makes this inclusion fun and unusual is that while it certainly fits in with the seasonal theme, one is probably more used to hearing it on oldies stations than Christmas albums. Everything on the album fits uniformly together. Even a piece like "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," usually a brisk and upbeat number, is as peaceful as "Silent Night" in the hands of Steve Erquiaga. This collection will undoubtedly find its way to numerous gift stores, where it will play in the background as listeners shop, but it should also prove just right for a quiet evening after the hectic rush of holiday shopping. For fans of the series (which includes half a dozen entries), The Night Before Christmas will be a welcome addition. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

"Autumn" (08/21/2001) New Age Winston, George, Windham Hill RecordsSolo performer: George Winston (piano). Recorded on June 19-20, 1980. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Solo performer: George Winston (piano). Producers: William Ackerman, George Winston, Howard Johnston, Cathy Econom. Engineers: Hans Soper, Russell Bond, Howard Johnston. Principally recorded on June 19-20, 1980. Includes liner notes by George Winston. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. AUTUMN was superstar new age pianist George Winston's first album to sell more than 1,000,000 copies. Listening to these spare, emotionally rich pieces, it's easy to understand why. But it's also clear what sets Winston apart from the hordes of other new age piano soloists: an insistent--occasionally even jarring--gothic sensibility that informs his music. Like many of his albums, AUTUMN found its inspiration in the seasonal changes wrought upon the Montana landscape that Winston calls home. Though it might be easy to pigeonhole a composition like "Woods" as easy listening, a more careful examination reveals a darker--daresay even sinister--underside, one more informed by Birnam Wood than by Hundred Acre Wood. "Stars" may bring forth images of cloud-free starlit skies, but its stirring emotionalism yearns for something more, making it difficult for a listener not to contemplate the infinitesimally small stature of human existence within an infinitely vast universe. "Winter into Spring" (04/09/2002) New Age Winston, George, Windham Hill RecordsProducers: George Winston, William Ackerman. Recorded at Different Fur Recording, San Francisco, California in March 1982. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Producers: George Winston, William Ackerman. Recorded in March 1982. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. In a sense, this second seasonal album follows an opposite direction from Autumn, its hard, isolated notes and stop-and-start style gradually giving way from the stasis of winter to the growth and movement of spring. It's a good album for beginning your day. ~ William Ruhlmann

"December" (09/01/2003) New Age Winston, George, Windham Hill RecordsSolo performer: George Winston (piano). Recorded in September & October 1982. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Solo performer: George Winston (piano). Producers: William Ackerman, George Winston, Howard Johnston, Cathy Econom. Engineers: Stephen Miller, Karen Kirsch, Howard Johnston. Recorded in September & October 1982. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The mother of all solo instrumental albums, and with good reason. Mixing traditional carols with Pachelbel's Canon and a few originals, Winston produces a solo piano album of unparalleled -- and undeniable -- beauty. How can music be simultaneously stirring and soothing, relaxed yet exalted? Millions have found the answer here, and an industry has spent more than a decade trying to duplicate it. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Pure Will Ackerman" (05/23/2006) New Age Will Ackerman, Windham Hill Jazz (USA)Personnel: Michael Hedges (guitar); William Ackerman (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); George Winston, Ira Stein (piano); Michael Manring (bass guitar). Renowned as both the founder of Windham Hill Records and one of that label's finest artists, guitarist Will Ackerman is well represented on this 16-track mostly instrumental collection. Drawing primarily on his 1980s material, PURE also features several compositions from other stages of Ackerman's career, including "The Impending Death of the Virgin Spirit," a delicate piece from '77, and a beautiful 2004 recording of "Murray's Song." While many of the tracks feature Ackerman solo, he is accompanied by top-notch musicians on a handful of tunes, most notably a gorgeously spare live performance of "Hawk Circle" from '83 with fellow six-string luminary Michael Hedges and pianist George Winston. As an introduction to Ackerman's gentle, relaxing sound, this compilation is ideal.

"Cinema: A Windham Hill Collection" (03/22/2005) Soundtracks Various Artists, Windham Hill RecordsLiner Note Author: Dawn Atkinson. On CINEMA: A WINDHAM HILL COLLECTION, producer Dawn Atkinson brings together musicians from the Windham Hill label to play selections from popular films. There is a range of classics both older (Jim Brickman's piano treatment of "Over the Rainbow" from THE WIZARD OF OZ) and newer (Tracy Silverman's multi-tracked violin rendition of "Hedwig's Theme" from the first HARRY POTTER movie), in addition to themes from BAGHDAD CAF? (a chamber-style duet between oboist Paul McCandless and cellist Joan Jeanrenaud) and THE BLACK STALLION (played by George Winston on piano). As Windham Hill aficionados might expect, the mood here is soothing, with each instrumentalist bringing a sense of space and balance to his or her treatment of the music. Alex de Grassi's "Theme from Princess Bride," for example, is plucked delicately on solo guitar with a light instrumental wash fleshing out the texture behind it. The beautiful "Summer Knows" (from SUMMER OF '42) is transformed into a breezy, rhythmic sway by Philippe Saisse. Overall, the pieces are well selected, the arrangements and performances are fresh and considered, and the music is subtle and relaxing.

"Windham Hill Essential Series" (07/15/1997) New Age Thomas, Pat (Drums/Producer), Windham Hill RecordsThis is part of Windham Hill Records' Essential Windham Hill series. Drawing largely from Patrick O'Hearn's early solo work (particularly ANCIENT DREAMS and BETWEEN TWO WORLDS), this collection presents many of the finest compositions by the New Age/ambient multi-instrumentalist, whose resume features stints as a bassist with Frank Zappa and Missing Persons. Highlights of this atmospheric compilation include the exotic "Life Along the River Vaal" and the serene "First Light," which show the influence of both world music and '80s New Wave.
