Le Best of Cirque du Soleil by Cirque Du Soleil (CD - 09/21/2004)
Description:
"Le Best of Cirque du Soleil" (09/21/2004) New Age Cirque Du Soleil, Cirque Du Soleil MusiqueThe Cirque Du Soleil acrobat troupe has used interesting musical soundtracks since their inception in the early 1980's. Now a multifaceted company, the various Cirque Du Soleil ensembles have released several albums documenting their music. On this 20th Anniversary Edition, listeners will be treated to compositions from many of their shows, including selections from SALTIMBANCO, ALEGRIA and others. Not surprisingly, "Egypte" from MYSTERE features the jingles of Egyptian tambourines, and Islamic scales from Northeast Africa. The only thing missing is the belly dancer. The Indonesian-flavored "Gamelan" from the show O vividly depicts Java and Bali. "Vocea" from VAREKAI is more of a Western pop tune, though it is not sung in English. Pulsating percussion and robust strings dominate this mix. Since LE BEST offers a smattering of music from around the world, this collection will give listeners an opportunity to hear the kind of musical diversity encouraged by the Cirque Du Soleil founders. Indeed, this compilation is as unique and multicultural as the performers and show designers themselves.

Varekai (Sdtk) by Cirque Du Soleil (CD - 01/07/2003)
"Varekai (Sdtk)" (01/07/2003) New Age Cirque Du Soleil, RCA Victor Records (USA)Cirque du Soleil's 2002 stage production, VAREKAI ("Wherever" in Bohemian patois) is the story of a fallen angel who wanders the underworld with a series of strange guides. His salvation comes in part from realizing the oneness of all humanity. Fittingly, the album of the same name (this is not the exact score of the show) is a maelstrom of exotic electronica containing a multiversity of ethnic flavors. African djembe sidles up to Gypsy violin, French musette-style accordions sigh over Indonesian shakers, and the languages of the world are sung, chanted, and whispered to thrilling effect. "Funambul" ("tightrope walker" in French) makes haunting use of a variety of vocal tricks: goose-bump-inducing chorale singing, a lovely mezzo-soprano solo, a reoccurring spoken-word part, and mysterious child-like whispers. Other ethnic fusion highlights include the techno-Qawwali "Oscillum," and "Emballa," a highly infectious faux-Afro-Brazilian number. Inspired by gypsies and nomads, VAREKAI celebrates the wandering spirit in all of us.

Featuring a large choir and a full symphony orchestra, KA builds on the troupe's usual dramatic, world music-flavored pop to create a soundtrack worthy of the grand spectacle the company presents for this martial-arts themed show.

O [8/16]
"O" (09/06/2005) New Age Cirque Du Soleil, Cirque Du Soleil MusiqueCirque Du Soleil: Julie McInnes (vocals, acoustic guitar, tiple, cello); Toumany Kouyate (vocals, kora); Roxanne Potvin (vocals, flute, percussion); Elise Guay (vocals, bagpipe, shawm, recorder, crumhorn); Lei Qiang (erhu); Jean-Francois Cote (accordion, keyboards, programming, sampler); Stephanie Gariepy (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, keyboards); Vovo (percussion, sound effects). The Cirque du Soleil franchise has produced many fine soundtracks. Among them is O, a show with water as its leitmotif. A play on the French word for water ("eau"), O reflects the always clever and artful minds of this contemporary dance/circus troupe. O opens with "Jeux d'Eau," a classically influenced adagio movement that features a contemplative cello melody and refined piano chords. From here, the soundtrack picks up steam with "Mer Noire," a piece that begins with a small vocal choir, then quickly transforms into an exhilarating overture replete with pounding drum rhythms and edge-of-your-seat string acrobatics. In the spirit of past Cirque du Soleil shows, O also borrows from various ethnic styles. Predictably, "Africa" blends various genres from the continent together with a vocal from an African native. Similarly, "Gamelan" invokes the sophisticated melodicism and modal underpinnings of Indonesian music while "Terre Aride" celebrates the exotic flavors of the Middle East. Overall, this is electrifying music; each composition bursts with color and variety.
