Recorded live at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece on September 24th, 1993. Includes backstage footage and interviews with Yanni. Personnel: Yanni (vocals, guitar); Karen Briggs , Shardad Rohani (violin); Julie Homi, Bradley Joseph (keyboards); Ric Fierabracci (bass guitar); Charlie Adam (drums); Michael Bruno (percussion). Yanni has enjoyed sensational success over the past several years with his lush, densely layered, new age orchestrations. But the Greek keyboardist/composer's overtly romantic musings achieve a bold new dimension when augmented by a full symphony orchestra, and some of the more rhythmic elements in his music, previously masked under a wall of synthesizers, come to the fore--and the resulting music is much closer to progressive rock (and his own native roots) than new age. Thus we have distinctly Greek rhythmic cycles (in seven) keying the variations on the opening "Santorini" and "Keys To The Imagination," richly colored by percussion fanfares and instrumental breaks--demonstrating that the breadth of Yanni's music and his interest in popular forms is greater than many of his diehard fans have grown to expect. And on an arrangement like "The Rain Must Fall," Yanni frames his boleroesque piano shadings against a mysterious backbeat and fretless bass, which soon develops into--of all things--an R&B-styled slap bass groove. But those fans drawn to the purely lyric side of Yanni's art won't be disappointed by the composer's programming on YANNI LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS. Such keyboard-inflected fantasias as "Reflections Of Passion," "One Man's Dream" and "Until The Last Moment" illustrate Yanni's sentimental yearnings, while the Oriental flourishes of "Swept Away" demonstrate why he's achieved such an immense following among adult contemporary listeners.

"Nightbird" (01/15/2002) New Age Yanni, BMG Special ProductsPersonnel includes: Yanni. Personnel: Yanni (piano, keyboards). This collection of rare and never before released recordings by Yanni sparkles with imagination and flair and is sure to put a pulse in the bloodstream of even the casual listener. Being a skeptic, one will find a soothing yet orchestral wonder within the framework of each of Yanni's recordings. Ranging from a variety of instruments, the pianist/composer extraordinaire continues to bring charm and romance to life in his art. Presented here on Nightbird are seven dramatic and scintillating recordings, good for morning rise, airplane trips, car travel, and dreamy night escapades. "Nightbird" radiates with scorching guitars and bouncy conga percussion. Throughout the record is Yanni's assertive direction and piano lines. "Chasing Shadows" is a murky, haunting number dealing with the lives of those too quick on their feet, not giving themselves enough time to slow down, enjoy life and catch up with their shadow, and enjoying one's true sense of self. "Dance with a Stranger" leaves the listener to ponder about chance encounters and failed romances, or should-have-beens, to the excitement and anticipation of a new love interest. The plethora of instruments and sounds used in this record is mind-boggling, and it's fun for the listener just to sit back, kick up their feet, and dream through all the different impressions and colors of sound and timbre. "In My Time" (04/06/1993) New Age Yanni, Private MusicIN MY TIME is also available in the box set YANNI: THE PRIVATE YEARS with the CDs REFLECTIONS OF PASSION, IN CELEBRATION OF LIFE, DARE TO DREAM and CD and DVD versions of LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS. Personnel: Yanni (keyboards); Charlie Bisharat, Karen Briggs, Endre Granat (violin); Sachi McHenry (cello); Julie Homi, Bradley Joseph (keyboards); Osama Afifi (bass); Michael Bruno (percussion). Composer: Yanni. Personnel: Endre Granat (violin). Recording information: Yanni's Private Studios. Photographer: Lynn Goldsmith. After his wildly successful DARE TO DREAM album, the iconic New Age performer Yanni decided to rein in the dense, propulsive, synthesizer-heavy element of his music, opting for a more intimate, piano-led sound on 1993's IN MY TIME. The stylistic change certainly didn't hurt the Greek superstar's popularity; if anything, it increased his already-high profile, leading to the multi-platinum concert performance LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS. IN MY TIME opens with the spare, delicate "In the Morning Light," establishing a beautifully hushed tone, with gentle piano lines gliding over light, subtle keyboard backing. "The End of August" takes on a fittingly warm, late-summer mood that's enhanced by the emotive violin playing of Endre Granat, while "Only a Memory" uses sensitive piano/keyboard interplay to conjure up nostalgia for bygone eras. Yanni's most thoughtful and stately album, IN MY TIME is perfect for listeners seeking the quiet side of this adult-contemporary hero.

"Ultimate Yanni" (01/21/2003) New Age Yanni, Windham Hill/BMG HeritageProducers include: Yanni, Leonard Hill, Malcolm McLaren, Peter Baumann, Jerry Steckling. Compilation producer: Rob Santos. Includes liner notes by Simon Czukay. Photographer: Lynn Goldsmith. There's no denying that Yanni is a global phenomenon virtually unmatched in the annals of popular music. In addition to selling gazillions of albums and single-handedly bringing new age music to a mass audience, his flair for showmanship led him to become the first Western musician to play concerts at both the Taj Mahal and China's Forbidden City. Yanni's taste for the grandiose is reflected in his music as well, which mixes the most dramatic and sweeping elements of progressive rock, world music, neo-classical, and experimental electronic music into a easily palatable stew that can be by turns soothing or awe-inspiring. THE ULTIMATE YANNI is pretty much what the title implies--the definitive collection of recordings from Yanni's "classic" 1986-1994 Private Music era. The two-disc set covers all the keyboardist/media icon's best-known pieces, from the ubiquitous romantic piano ballad "One Man's Dream" (from 1993's IN MY TIME) to the thundering orchestral onslaught that is "Santorini" (from the multi-platinum LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS). THE ULTIMATE YANNI is the best way to experience the full range of Yanni's capabilities without buying each of his individual albums.

"Ethnicity" (02/11/2003) New Age Yanni, Virgin Records (USA)Personnel: Yanni (arranger, piano, keyobards); Alfreda Gerald, Michelle Amato (vocals); Karen Briggs (violin); Pedro Eustache (flute, duduk, argul, Uillean pipes, saxophone); Noelani Brock, Regina Acuna-Williams, Peter Lehman, Randy Nichols, Suzy Park, Kurt Von Schmittou (background vocals). Personnel: Michelle Amato, Randy Nichols, Kurt VonSchmittou, Alfreda Gerald (vocals); Pedro Eustache (chant, flute, duduk, Uilleann pipe, reeds, saxophone); Karen Briggs (violin). Audio Mixer: Yanni. Recording information: Yanni's Private Studios (2002). Arranger: Yanni. Though Yanni is widely known as one of the most popular purveyors of New Age music, there's actually quite a bit going on here. In addition to the Greek keyboard whiz's usual arching, romantic melodies there are a host of other musical elements present. ETHNICITY is an eclectic mix of the operatic (check out Michelle Amato's pipes on "For All Seasons" and "Almost a Whisper"), the electronic (the pulsing, almost Moroder-esque sequencers on "Play Time" and "Written on the Wind"), and the ancient (the chanting on "Tribal Dream," the timeless-sounding flute work that permeates the album). Keying in on the album's title, the closing tune "Jivaeri" is a traditional Greek ballad that touches on Yanni's personal roots while still remaining very much of a piece with the rest of this sonically diverse offering.

"In Celebration of Life" (11/12/1991) New Age Yanni, Private MusicIN CELEBRATION OF LIFE is also available as part of the boxed set YANNI: THE PRIVATE YEARS with the CDs IN MY TIME, REFLECTIONS OF PASSION, DARE TO DREAM, and CD and DVD versions of LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS. Photographers: Lynn Goldsmith; Kevin Mazur. In Celebration of Life draws from four early Yanni albums -- Keys to Imagination, Out of Silence, Chameleon Days, and Niki Nana -- and also includes the new "Song for Antarctica," recorded for the Polar Shift benefit album. The collection is a solid overview of the new age composer's initial work, displaying all of the tenets that have made his music so popular over the years. Opener "Santorini" features a powerful, sweeping melody, while "Marching Season" is driven by the relationship between an urgent piano line and a surging, synthesized string section. "Keys to Imagination" begins in a contemplative mood, but by song's end features the galloping keyboards and crashing percussion typical of Yanni's work. Fans will have most, if not all of the material here, but newcomers might enjoy In Celebration of Life as an overview of Yanni's early work. Fans may also want to search out the Polar Shift compilation, which features "Song for Antartica," as well as music from heavyweights like Kitaro, Vangelis, and Enya. ~ Johnny Loftus

"The String Quartet Tribute to Yanni" (01/15/2002) New Age Various Artists, Vitamin Records (USA)Tributee: Yanni. Personnel: Dynell Weber, Pam Jacobson (violin); Tom Tally (viola); Steve Velez (cello). Arranger: Jim McMillen. It may be hard to believe, but The String Quartet Tribute to Yanni is not a bad album -- not by any means. In fact, this may be preferable to most of his recorded output to a lot of listeners. Where keyboards and rock instruments mixed with an orchestra may give this music the dramatic flourishes that make it seem so grand, with a quartet it becomes obvious that a simple group of four can make the same sort of noise. Of course, this would take the mystique out of Yanni's television specials, but this music is perfectly fine without the lasers and pageantry. Fans of Yanni will probably enjoy this, and even non-fans may want to give this a chance. ~ Bradley Torreano

"Devotion: The Best of Yanni" (08/26/1997) New Age Yanni, Private MusicPhotographer: Lynn Goldsmith. The leading icon of New Age music, Yanni became a full-blown pop-culture phenomenon in the early 1990s. With his flowing hair and dashing good looks providing the perfect image for his bold, keyboard-driven compositions, the Greek performer won the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. His popularity reached its peak in 1994 with the multi-platinum LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS album and video. DEVOTION: THE BEST OF YANNI draws from the artist's mid-'80s-to-mid-'90s period, focusing on 1992's DARE TO DREAM, with six tracks from that album. Songs here include the chiming "Once Upon a Time," the sweeping "Song for Antarctica," and the soaringly operatic "Aria." The collection also features two tracks from the aforementioned live recording--"The End of August," a spare number that showcases Yanni's delicate piano playing, and "Marching Season," a jaunty, Mannheim Steamroller-like tune. For an ideal Yanni primer, look no further than DEVOTION.

"The Very Best of Yanni" (10/10/2000) New Age Yanni, Windham Hill RecordsPersonnel includes: Yanni (piano, keyboards); Mona Lisa (vocals); Charlie Adams (drums, percussion). Producers: Yanni, Peter Bauman. Compilation producer: Paul Williams. Includes liner notes by Michael Hill. Digitally remastered by Bill Lacey (Digital Sound & Picture, New York, New York). Personnel: Yanni (piano, keyboards); Buzz Ravineau (sequencer). Liner Note Author: Michael Hill. Photographer: Lynn Goldsmith. A handful of his millions of fans worldwide are bound to not have every big Yanni hit in their collection, and so this collection -- perhaps the final Private Music greatest-hits collection, because there have been various others -- certainly serves a functional purpose. Because of the seemingly simple compositional nature of his tunes and his intense showmanship, the Greek-born keyboardist has inspired his share of detractors, too. But these songs, from the classically inspired "Aria" (first heard on a series of British Airways commercials) to the exotic, Middle Eastern-flavored "Looking Glass" and lush, percussive "Swept Away" proves that if he's not the world's greatest technician, he can definitely write a strong melody. And that's what pop music is all about, so lighten up. The solo piano number "One Man's Dream" is now a precious new age classic, as is "In the Mirror." These tracks make the most emotional impact, even though most of the songs here that made him most popular are a bit more of the synth-created variety. If you are a big Yanni fan, check the track listing; chances are, you have all these songs somewhere else. Still, The Very Best of Yanni is a good primer on the man and his music. ~ Jonathan Widran

"Love Songs" (04/13/1999) New Age Yanni, Private MusicIncludes a free Yanni calender. Personnel: Yanni (keyboards); Charlie Bisharat (violin); Charlie Adams (drums, percussion). Recorded between 1987 and 1993. Personnel: Charlie Bisharat (violin); Charlie Adams (drums, electronic drums, percussion). Composer/keyboardist Yanni is such a prolific artist that it behooves Private Music to bring together some of his finest moments for a compilation. He's such an unabashedly romantic artist that it seems only natural for such a compilation to be called LOVE SONGS, and to contain delicately constructed, lovingly performed pieces that convey a world of emotion without a single word being sung. Drawn from various Yanni albums from the late '80s to the mid '90s, LOVE SONGS unsurprisingly centers around the simple, melodic piano work of the Greek pop star, and the lush, emotive arrangements by which his melodies are surrounded. The mood is uniformly soft and dreamy, and will appeal to fans of contemporary instrumental pop along the lines of John Tesh and Jim Brickman.
