Cisco Systems offers a family of Fast Ethernet (FE) port adapters optimized for the specific requirements of campus and enterprise backbones, data centers, and Token Ring Inter-Switch Link (ISL) network topologies. The Cisco FE port-adapter options provide either one or two ports of 100BaseTX (copper) or 100BaseFX (fiber) Fast Ethernet ports per adapter. Each port can be configured for half- and full-duplex operation. Cisco Fast Ethernet port adapters may be used in an open port-adapter slot on Cisco 7200 Series Routers or in an open bay within Cisco second- and fourth-generation Versatile Interface Processors (VIP2 and VIP4) on Cisco 7500 Routers. Portability between these systems simplifies ordering and minimizes overall support and sparing costs. The PA-2FE-FX port adapter support either 10- or 100-Mbps configurations with auto-negotiation. This enables auto-selection of the appropriate network speed and duplex mode.

The Cisco 3600 platform offers a wide variety of serial connectivity modules to accommodate the range of application needs in customer networks. The serial network module family for the Cisco 3600 series assures customers that they can choose a serial connectivity solution that fits their requirements. Available as network modules or WAN interface cards, serial connectivity options offer several port densities, synchronous and asynchronous alternatives, and integrated channel service unit/data service unit (CSU/DSU). As modular components, they are easily and inexpensively field upgradable as customer requirements change. This single-port serial WIC-1T provides low-density, high -speed remote or branch office connectivity without sacrificing an entire network module slot. Compatible with a Cisco 1600, the WAN interface card is configured within a mixed-media network module (NM-1E2W, NM-2E2W, NM-1E1R2W) in the Cisco 3600. The WAN interface card enables true multifunction configurations within a single Cisco 3600 chassis.

The WS-G5487, 1000BaseZX operates on ordinary single mode fiber optic link spans of up to 70 km in length. Link spans of up to 100 km are possible using premium single mode fiber or dispersion shifted single mode fiber (premium single mode fiber has a lower attenuation per unit length than ordinary single mode fiber; dispersion shifted single mode fiber has both lower attenuation per unit length, and less dispersion). The WS-G5487 must be coupled to single mode fiber optic cable, which is the type of cable typically used in long haul telecommunications applications. The WS-G5487 will not operate correctly when coupled to multi-mode fiber, and it is not intended to be used in application environments (e.g. building backbones, horizontal cabling) where multi-mode fiber is frequently used. The WS-G5487 is intended to be used as a Physical Medium Dependent (PMD) component for Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, as found on various switch and router products. It will operate at a signaling rate of 1250 MBaud, transmitting and receiving 8B/10B-encoded data. When shorter distances of single mode fiber are used, it may be necessary to insert an in-line optical attenuator in the link, to avoid overloading the receiver. A 10 dB in-line optical attenuator should be inserted between the fiber optic cable plant and the receiving port on the WS-G5487 GBIC at each end of the link whenever the fiber optic cable span is less than 25 km. A 5 dB in-line optical attenuator should be inserted between the fiber optic cable plant and the receiving port on the WS-G5487 GBIC at each end of the link whenever the fiber optic cable span is equal to or greater than 25 km, and less than 50 km.

The PA-8T-V.35 provides up to eight synchronous serial interfaces for the chassis. The PA-8T-V.35 network interfaces provide a direct connection between the high-speed bus in the router and external networks. Each PA-8T-V.35 interface provides full-duplex (FDX) operation at T1 (1.544 Mbps) and E1 (2.048 Mbps) speeds. The V.35 interface is most commonly used in the United States and throughout Europe. All eight PA-8T-V.35 interfaces connect to external networks through a single port that has a 200-pin, D-shell receptacle. You must use a V.35 compact serial cable to connect PA-8T-V.35 interfaces to an external data service unit (DSU) or channel service unit (CSU). The compact serial cable attached to the single receptacle determines the mode (DCE or DTE) for all eight interfaces.

The eight-port and 16-port Gigabit Ethernet modules in the Catalyst 6000 Family supports GigaBit Interface Converter (GBIC) modular technology to ensure customers have the maximum flexibility in configuring physical network interfaces in their Gigabit Ethernet network1. GBICs enable the customer to intermix any combination of 802.3z-compliant 1000BaseX interfaces on a port-by-port basis. GBICs are hot swappable and provide easy selection or change of interfaces. Cisco is offering a 1000BaseLX/LH interface that is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3z 1000BaseLX standard, but has the ability to go up to 10 km over single mode fiber, 5 km further than garden-variety 1000BaseLX interfaces. The 1000BaseZX standard has the ability to transmit traffic up to 100 Km over dispersion shifted fiber.
