The Cisco platforms offer a wide variety of serial connectivity modules to accommodate the range of application needs in customer networks. The serial network module family for the Cisco 3600 series assures customers that they can choose a serial connectivity solution that fits their requirements. Available as network modules or WAN interface cards, serial connectivity options offer several port densities, synchronous and asynchronous alternatives, and integrated channel service unit/data service unit (CSU/DSU). As modular components, they are easily and inexpensively field upgradeable as customer requirements change. The Cisco Systems' T1 data service unit/channel service unit (DSU/CSU) WAN interface card is an integrated, fully managed DSU/CSU for T1 or fractional T1 service. Supported on the Cisco 1600, 1720, 2600, and 3600 series routers, it provides a cost-effective router-DSU/CSU combination.

While the pace of change in network technology continues to increase, global deregulation of telecommunications has allowed more service providers to compete for data, voice, and video network services. Only companies who have designed their network infrastructures with these factors in mind will be able to benefit from the lower prices caused by increased competition and protect themselves from "technology lockout" in the future. The many LAN connectivity modules for the Cisco 3600 platform are designed to accommodate a range of application needs in customer networks. The LAN network module family assures customers that they can choose a LAN connectivity solution that fits their requirements. Available as network modules, LAN connectivity options offer several port densities, media options, and speeds. This single-port serial WIC-1T provides low-density, high -speed remote or branch office connectivity without sacrificing an entire network module slot. Compatible with a Cisco 1600, the WAN interface card is configured within a mixed-media network module (NM-1E2W, NM-2E2W, NM-1E1R2W) in the Cisco 3600. The WAN interface card enables true multifunction configurations within a single Cisco 3600 chassis.

The WS-G5487, 1000BaseZX operates on ordinary single mode fiber optic link spans of up to 70 km in length. Link spans of up to 100 km are possible using premium single mode fiber or dispersion shifted single mode fiber (premium single mode fiber has a lower attenuation per unit length than ordinary single mode fiber; dispersion shifted single mode fiber has both lower attenuation per unit length, and less dispersion). The WS-G5487 must be coupled to single mode fiber optic cable, which is the type of cable typically used in long haul telecommunications applications. The WS-G5487 will not operate correctly when coupled to multi-mode fiber, and it is not intended to be used in application environments (e.g. building backbones, horizontal cabling) where multi-mode fiber is frequently used. The WS-G5487 is intended to be used as a Physical Medium Dependent (PMD) component for Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, as found on various switch and router products. It will operate at a signaling rate of 1250 MBaud, transmitting and receiving 8B/10B-encoded data. When shorter distances of single mode fiber are used, it may be necessary to insert an in-line optical attenuator in the link, to avoid overloading the receiver. A 10 dB in-line optical attenuator should be inserted between the fiber optic cable plant and the receiving port on the WS-G5487 GBIC at each end of the link whenever the fiber optic cable span is less than 25 km. A 5 dB in-line optical attenuator should be inserted between the fiber optic cable plant and the receiving port on the WS-G5487 GBIC at each end of the link whenever the fiber optic cable span is equal to or greater than 25 km, and less than 50 km.

The channelized T1/ ISDN PRI modules are available with and without a built-in CSU and with one or two ports. The channelized T1/ISDN PRI modules connect to an external CSU. The channelized T1/ISDN PRI CSU modules connect directly to the network. Each of the T1 modules provides up to 24 virtual channels per T1 port. The channelized E1/ISDN PRI modules are available with one or two E1 ports with balanced or unbalanced interfaces and are compatible with the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) G.703/G.704 specifications. The channelized E1/ISDN PRI modules receive and transmit data bidirectionally at the E1 rate of 2.048 Mbps and provide up to 30 virtual channels per E1 port.

The PA-8T-V.35 provides up to eight synchronous serial interfaces for the chassis. The PA-8T-V.35 network interfaces provide a direct connection between the high-speed bus in the router and external networks. Each PA-8T-V.35 interface provides full-duplex (FDX) operation at T1 (1.544 Mbps) and E1 (2.048 Mbps) speeds. The V.35 interface is most commonly used in the United States and throughout Europe. All eight PA-8T-V.35 interfaces connect to external networks through a single port that has a 200-pin, D-shell receptacle. You must use a V.35 compact serial cable to connect PA-8T-V.35 interfaces to an external data service unit (DSU) or channel service unit (CSU). The compact serial cable attached to the single receptacle determines the mode (DCE or DTE) for all eight interfaces.
