The ARN Serial Adapter Module Upgrade adds a synchronous serial port to the Baystack ARN router. The ARN Serial Adapter can be placed in either of the 2 WAN adapter slots of the router. It supports V.35 RS-232 RS-449/422 balanced RS-530 and X.21. Using either internal or external clocking serial interfaces the adapter can be operated at speeds from 1200 bps to 2.048 mbps full duplex and support the use of T1 and E1 services. It can also be used to integrate remote site SNA devices such as SDLC and BSC controllers allowing them to share wan access with a site's LAN traffic. The adapter provides support of binary synchronous communications (BSC) pass-through, allows customers to converge BSC 3270 device traffic such as that of an automated Teller machine onto a high-performance multiprotocol IP backbone eliminating costly dial-up BSC links.

Each System Resource Module (SRM) provides arbitration and termination for two 256 Mbps PPX data paths. One SRM is included with each BLN and BCN. Designated the SRM-L, it also provides a 25-pin D-connector for a terminal or modem to access the Technician Interface for diagnostic and maintenance operations. The BLN and BCN also support an optional SRM for 1 Gbps total bandwidth and PPX redundancy. Designated the SRM-F, it supports the two remaining 256 Mbps PPX data paths. With both the SRM-L and SRM-F installed, each FRE and ARE can access the four PPX paths. The two SRMs provide redundancy for nonstop operation if one SRM fails. A malfunctioning SRM can be hot-swapped with a new SRM while two other data paths continue to operate at 512 Mbps aggregate. Because the two SRMs operate independently of each other, they supply complete fault resiliency.

The draft RFC Compression Control Protocol (CCP) is supported along with the Nortel Networks WAN Compression Protocol (WCP).Two compression modes are available: Continuous Packet Compression (CPC) and Packet-by-Packet Compression (PPC). CPC mode maintains a compression history to maximize throughput. PPC optimizes throughput in customer specific applications. The Hardware-based Data Compression Coprocessor net module is available in two models to support different numbers of network paths. The 32 context and 128 context models can be configured to use an 8 KB compression dictionary for each PPP circuit or Frame Relay virtual circuit up to the number of contexts provided in each model. The Hardware-based Data Compression Coprocessor net module occupies one net module position, and one net module is configured per ASN base unit to provide compression services for all WAN interfaces installed in that base unit.
