"Rock Hits of the 80's [Sony Special Products 2000]" (2000) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Another grab-bag compilation from Sony's budget-line Sony Special Products subsidiary, Rock Hits of the 80's comes in ugly packaging and the disc itself has a short running time, but it does feature a dozen big singles. Almost all of the tracks -- Living Colour's "Cult of Personality," Warrant's "Down Boys," and Alice Cooper's "Poison" are exceptions -- come from the earlier half of the decade, and there's a definite emphasis on heaviness. No Richard Marx here, folks. (That said, there are Hooters.) These songs can be had on better sets, but the disc could be worth it for those who are on a tight budget and must have a few of the songs. ~ Andy Kellman

"80s Monster Rock, Vol. 5" (07/18/2000) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Platinum Disc Corp. The fifth volume of Platinum Disc's 80s Monster Rock series includes Loverboy's "Lovin' Every Minute of It," Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight/Be My Baby," the Romantics' "Talking in Your Sleep," Men at Work's "Who Can It Be Now?," and Matthew Wilder's "Break My Stride." This volume isn't quite as macho in tone when compared to its counterparts, so it might be considered one of the least monstrous editions of the series. It's yet another perfectly average collection, and it doesn't score any points for being skimpy -- there are only ten songs in all. Consumers are advised again to favor any number of various-artist titles that provide more bang for the buck. ~ Andy Kellman

"80s Monster Rock, Vol. 4" (07/18/2000) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Platinum Disc Corp. The fourth volume of Platinum Disc's 80s Monster Rock series includes Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone," Alice Cooper's "Poison," Europe's "The Final Countdown," Quiet Riot's "Cum On Feel the Noize," and Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." The average person probably doesn't consider Don Johnson's "Heartbeat" or the Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way" to be considerably monstrous, but those songs are here as well. It's a another perfectly average collection, and it doesn't score any points for being skimpy -- there are only ten songs in all. "The Greatest Hits of the '80s, Vol. 12" (07/18/2000) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Platinum Disc Corp. Each volume in the Platinum Disc label's extensive Greatest Hits of the '80s series features ten chart-toppers that span the decade, with a heavy emphasis on songs that continue to be played regularly on adult contemporary radio stations. The selections are a bit too broad and the amount of material on each disc falls toward the skimpy side, so none of the discs is all that remarkable. The 12th volume of the series includes Scandal's "Love's Got a Line on You," Cock Robin's "When Your Heart Is Weak," Blue ?yster Cult's "Burnin' for You," Henry Lee Summer's "I Wish I Had a Girl," and the Producers' "What She Does to Me." ~ Andy Kellman

"Totally Awesome 80's: 1980-1982" (10/02/2001) Rock & Pop Various Artists, EMI Music DistributionAmericans who find themselves unfamiliar with many of the tunes on this collection of '80s pop hits should realize that the disc is UK-derived, so these songs WERE hits somewhere. Alongside such US staples as Kim Carnes's "Bette Davis Eyes" and the J. Geils Band's "Centerfold," TOTALLY AWESOME 80's affords the casual US listener the opportunity to get friendly with the early-'80s British "new romantic" scene, as represented by the synth-tinged, Bowie-influenced dance-rock of Duran Duran ("Planet Earth"), Classix Nouveaux ("Is it a Dream"), and the late, lamented Spandau Ballet ("Chant No. 1"). Along the way, we're also treated to the mod-soul sound of pre-"Eileen" Dexy's Midnight Runners and a surprisingly effective cover of Tom Rush's ballad "No Regrets" by Ultravox frontman Midge Ure. The early '80s; how sweet they were.

"Biggest Hits of the 80's" (04/16/2002) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Sony Music Distribution (USA)With a title like Biggest Hits of the 80's, you might figure Sony Special Products release from 2003 might be a pretty classic compilation. It isn't. At only ten tracks it is bound to leave a lot to be desired anyway but the selections don't live up to the lofty title. Sure, most of the songs are bona fide smashes like Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing," Philip Bailey's "Easy Lover" and Kenny Loggins' "Footloose" but some like Luther Vandross' "Stop to Love," Loverboy's "This Could Be the Night" weren't that big. They had bigger hits that could have been chosen for the disc. This error in selection and the brevity of the disc make it a less than essential and not very interesting purchase. ~ Tim Sendra

"Hits From the 80's [Digipak]" (07/19/2005) Rock & Pop Countdown Singers, Madacy DistributionThe best part of the three-CD Hits From the 80's happens during the first song on the second disc. The Countdown Singers cover "Flashdance...What a Feeling" almost perfectly, with only one minor problem. When the song reaches its emotional highpoint, the anonymous singer simply can not handle it, and her voice wavers hilariously while the song desperately tries to keep together. It is moments like these that can make the Countdown Singers one of the most endearing (if painful) session groups in music. The 30 versions of '80s songs are below the standard for the Countdown Singers; their efforts on other cover albums are far more impressive. For whatever reason, they cannot get the vocals right on any of the songs here. Although some people really do not care who sings as long as it sounds like the original, most listeners would probably have a hard time swallowing the awful Cindy Lauper impersonation found within. For what it is worth, the Countdown Singers can at least re-create the background music almost note perfect, but maybe they should avoid material from this time period if it ends up sounding like this. Those who usually count on these Madacy budget albums will probably be disappointed this time around, as these songs are lifeless and hard to listen to. But to fans of unintentionally bad music, this may be of interest. There are some karaoke-quality covers here that are quite fun to pick apart. ~ Bradley Torreano

"#1 Hits of the 80's [Madacy]" (09/30/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Madacy DistributionMadacy's #1 Hits of the 80's collects three discs' worth of that decade's hits reworked by the Countdown Singers. These re-recorded versions range from the passable ("Glory of Love," "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," "Eye of the Tiger") to the dreadful ("Let's Dance," "Jump," "Private Eyes"), but the bottom line is that anyone who wants to hear the original hits represented on this set should look elsewhere. ~ Heather Phares

"Another Lost Decade: The '80s Second British Invasion" (08/30/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Time/Life MusicAs far as '80s collections go, Another Lost Decade: The '80s Second British Invasion is pretty interesting. It gathers 14 songs from some of the biggest names on the U.K. scene; only instead of going for the obvious track in most cases they selected a secondary hit. For example instead of picking Duran Duran's "Rio" the producers choose "The Reflex," and instead of the Human League's "Don't You Want Me," they use "Fascination." This strategy works on two levels, by giving the casual fan the recognizable names they desire but also giving someone who is tired of the same old hits something different. Not too different of course, all the acts here are mainstream and non-threatening, but enough to lift Another Lost Decade above the level of mediocrity most overviews of this nature achieve. ~ Tim Sendra

"Biggest Country Duets of the 80's" (01/13/1998) Oldies Various Artists, Universal Special ProductsUnknown Contributor Roles: Conway Twitty; Ed Bruce; Glen Campbell; John Anderson; Loretta Lynn; The Oak Ridge Boys; Steve Wariner; Tanya Tucker; Barbara Mandrell; Vince Gill; Waylon Jennings; Willie Nelson; Lee Greenwood. Biggest Country Duets of the '80s is a budget-priced collection featuring ten country-pop hits from the '80s, all released on MCA Records. There's no rhyme or reason to the collection -- it features everything from Ed Bruce & Willie Nelson's "The Last Cowboy Song" and Boxcar Willie & Willie Nelson's "Boxcar's My Home" to John Anderson & Waylon Jennings' "Somewhere Between Ragged & Right," Conway Twitty & Vince Gill's "Saturday Night Special" and Barbara Mandrell & the Oak Ridge Boys' "When You Get to the Heart." Nevertheless, it's a fun collection that is worth its price for casual fans who just want hits and don't really care about context. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
