"Johnny Cash Collection [Madacy Bonus DVD] [Digipak]" (07/19/2005) Oldies Cash, Johnny, Madacy DistributionAll tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology. Even before his passing in 2003, there was already an enormous amount of Johnny Cash compilations in circulation, and the amount of new releases only intensified afterward. Case in point, the 2005 double-disc set Johnny Cash Collection. The 25-track audio portion is quite a dandy, as quite a few early Cash classics are represented, including "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues," "Big River," "Hey Porter," and "Get Rhythm." It is this early era of Cash's recording career that many longtime fans point to as his finest, as "the Man in Black" played a major part in popularizing rockabilly -- a style that managed to combine both country and rock & roll. But this certainly isn't a career-encompassing collection, especially when such renowned tracks as "Ring of Fire" and "Boy Named Sue" aren't included. With a wide variety of better-assembled Cash collections already out there, Johnny Cash Collection isn't the best, but certainly not the worst, either. [Madacy's DVD is not a musical one but, surprisingly, an obscure made-for-TV movie that Cash starred in from 1981, The Pride of Jesse Hallam, which sees Cash playing the lead role of a miner who is an illiterate single father raising two children. With a wide variety of better-assembled Cash collections already out there, Johnny Cash Collection isn't the best, but certainly not the worst, either.] ~ Greg Prato

"Inspiration" (04/06/2004) Oldies Hung, William (American Idol), Koch Records (USA)Includes a limited edition bonus DVD. Personnel includes: William Hung (vocals); Joshua Gilfand (guitar); Oba Frank Lords, Saul Alvarez (percussion, background vocals); Pepe, Mauro DeSantis, Christopher Young (programming); The Gonnabees, Jesika Pate, N'Gai (background vocals). Recorded at The Facility III, New Jersey; Fantasy Studios, California; and Ashe Music Studios, Florida. When California college student William Hung appeared on the AMERICAN IDOL reality show in January 2004, nobody could have predicted that he would be the first breakout star of the season. Although Hung was quickly and brutally eliminated by the judges, his awkward yet uninhibited rendition of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" endeared him to the show's audience, prompting a sudden fan following and even a record deal. The resulting album is INSPIRATION, 15 tracks of unabashedly tone-deaf cover tunes and Hung's own personal thoughts. After thanking his fans for purchasing the album, Hung launches into his signature tune, "She Bangs," supported by slick keyboard backing. Here, as on all of the tracks, his enthusiastic amateurishness proves surprisingly enjoyable. Soon it becomes apparent that the worst performances equal the best songs. By this standard, his versions of Enrique Iglesias's "Bailamos," R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly," and the Eagles' "Hotel California" are absolutely remarkable. Hung also takes on a trio of Elton John songs that includes "Rocket Man," which, for some, may conjure up fond memories of Biz Markie's "Just a Friend." Even if it proves to be the cap on Hung's 15 minutes of fame, INSPIRATION is a fun pop album that's delivered with more passion than many chart-topping celebrities could ever muster.

"Elvis by the Presleys" (05/03/2005) Oldies Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); Kathy Westmoreland, The Blossoms, The Imperials Quartet, The Jordanaires, The Sweet Inspirations (vocals, background vocals); J.D. Sumner, The Stamps, Ben Speer, Gordon Stoker, Millie Kirkham, Brock Speer (vocals); J.D. Sumner & the Stamps (background vocals). Audio Remixer: JXL. Liner Note Authors: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen; Michael Hill. Recording information: American Studios, Memphis, TN (01/??/1954-03/26/1977); Honolulu International Center, Honolulu, HI (01/??/1954-03/26/1977); Norman, OK (01/??/1954-03/26/1977); Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA (01/??/1954-03/26/1977); RCA Studios, Nashville, TN (01/??/1954-03/26/1977); Stax Studios, Memphis, TN (01/??/1954-03/26/1977); Sun STudios, Memphis, TN (01/??/1954-03/26/1977); The Hilton, Las Vegas, NV (01/??/1954-03/26/1977); The International Hotel, Las Vegas, NV (01/??/1954-03/26/1977); Western Recorders, Burbank, CA (01/??/1954-03/26/1977). Photographer: Henry Leutwyler. Arranger: Bergen White. ELVIS BY THE PRESLEYS is a two-disc audio companion to the 2005 television documentary of the same name. Selected by Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley, the songs here underscoring thoughts about Elvis from his family's perspective. The accompanying booklet, full of home photographs and liner notes, explains the selection of songs, so that "Heartbreak Hotel" can be heard anew as a testament to Elvis meeting Priscilla, and "Hawaiian Wedding Song" as an allegory of their nuptials. The liner notes also suggest that certain songs point to aspects of the King's personality, such as his spiritual, "seeking" nature ("Peace in the Valley"). Disc Two features five previously unreleased recordings, including alternate takes of "Jailhouse Rock," "You'll Be Gone" (a song distinguished by a rare Elvis songwriting credit), and "Anything That's Part of You" (with vocal accompaniment by the Jordanaires). On the two private home recordings, however--takes on Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me To Do" and Hank Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"--the listener truly has the sense of eavesdropping on the King behind closed doors. This lovingly assembled package is ideal for casual fans and completists alike.

"Blow by Blow/Wired/There and Back [Box] [Box]" (10/17/1995) Oldies Beck, Jeff, Epic (USA)Originally released as three separate albums, BLOW BY BLOW (1975), WIRED (1980) and THERE AND BACK (1976). Personnel: Jeff Beck (guitar); Narada Michael Walden (piano, drums); Max Middleton (clavinet, Fender Rhodes); Tony Hymas (keyboards); Jan Hammer (synthesizer, drums); Wilbur Bascomb, Phil Chenn, Mo Foster (bass); Ed Green, Richard Bailey, Simon Phillips (drums). Producers include: Jeff Beck, Ken Scott; George Martin, Jan Hammer. Engineers include: Pete Henderson, Dennis McKey, Jan Hammer. Personnel: Jeff Beck (guitar); Max Middleton (Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, keyboards); Jan Hammer (keyboards, synthesizer, drums); Tony Hymas (keyboards); Ed Greene, Narada Michael Walden, Simon Phillips (drums). Photographer: Lock Huey. Unknown Contributor Role: Ken Scott. Arranger: George Martin. Sony repackaged and re-released the three studio albums Jeff Beck recorded in the late '70s -- the fusion albums Blow by Blow and Wired, plus There and Back -- as a slip-cased box set. It's not a bad way to acquire the albums if you don't already own them, but there are no bonus tracks or new packaging or remastering, which means it's of marginal interest to hardcore collectors. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Thirty Years of Maximum R&B [Box]" (07/05/1994) Oldies Who (The), MCA Records (USA)The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar); Roger Daltrey (vocals); John Entwistle (bass); Keith Moon, Kenney Jones (drums). Recorded between 1964 & 1991. Includes 64-page booklet. THE GIFT SET includes the 30 YEARS OF MAXIMUM R&B box set, the 30 YEARS OF MAXIMUM R&B LIVE video, and a tee-shirt. The compilers of MAXIMUM R&B deserve credit for squeezing the collected works of the Who onto these four CDs. The Who's transition from singles band to something more ambitious is well chronicled on disc one. It contains early singles like "Zoot Suit" and "I'm the Face," classics like "My Generation" and "I Can't Explain," near-classics like "I'm a Boy" and early rarities like their take on the Stones' "The Last Time." The second disc charts the band's transition toward conceptual rock and opera, beginning with a selection from THE WHO SELL OUT and moving into their seminal rock opera "TOMMY." The band is also captured at their blistering best in cuts from legendary LIVE AT LEEDS. Disc three covers the early '70s, when the band was at a creative peak, turning out state-of-the-art rock with QUADROPHENIA and WHO'S NEXT. Songs like "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" still explode like Thor's hammer. The final disc has a little of everything, rare live versions, radio-only oddities, and the best of their late-'70s and early-'80s output. The later works demonstrate that the Who continued make great music even in the twilight of their career. "Try for the Sun: The Journey of Donovan [Box] [Limited]" (09/13/2005) Oldies Donovan, Legacy RecordingsIncludes bonus DVD. Personnel: Donovan (vocals, guitar). Epic/Legacy's 2005 box set TRY FOR THE SUN: THE JOURNEY OF DONOVAN is the most lovingly assembled and comprehensive survey of the artist's work to date. A four-disc package (including a DVD of a previously unreleased documentary), TRY FOR THE SUN charts the entire career of the Scottish troubadour, from his rootsy, folky beginnings to his wide-eyed psychedelic period and his various experiments with island rhythms, blues, and Renaissance-style minstrel songs. The set's 60 tracks encompass not only Donovan's essential recordings, but a number of rare and previously unreleased tracks as well. Taken together, the set gives a complete picture of this quintessential '60s figure, and the lavish packaging (the set comes in a purple velvet case), lengthy booklet, and pristinely remastered sound are icing on the cake. Casual listeners may want to go with one of the more manageable collections, but for the hardcore Donovan fan there is no worthier purchase.

"The Gorge" (06/29/2004) Oldies Matthews, Dave, RCA Records (USA)Dave Matthews Band: Dave Matthews (vocals, guitar); Boyd Tinsley (vocals, violin); LeRoi Moore (vocals, horns); Carter Beauford (vocals, drums); Stefan Lessard (bass guitar). Additional personnel: Butch Taylor (keyboards). Though the Dave Matthews Band has released several live albums, THE GORGE stands out from the pack due to its unique recording environment. The outdoor venue in question is carved out of the basalt cliffs adjacent to Oregon's Columbia River Gorge, a canyon in the Cascade mountain range. The space is renowned both for its scenic splendor and natural acoustic properties. As such, the sound quality here is warmer and clearer than a typical concert recording, and the ensemble seems inspired to deliver a top-notch performance. As on the group's other live outings, several tracks here are much longer than their studio counterparts. Particular beneficiaries of this treatment include the baritone sax-driven rocker "Two Step" and the funky world-beat exploration "Lie in Our Graves." In addition to the two audio discs, the set also includes a DVD that presents live footage, videos, and a documentary.

"Greatest Hits [Limited]" (11/08/2005) Oldies Kravitz, Lenny, Virgin Records (USA)Personnel includes: Lenny Kravitz (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, sitar, bass, drums); Abraham Appleman, Elena Barere, Barry Finclair, Regis Iandiorio, Jean Ingraham, Paul Peabody, Joel Pitchon, Richard Sortomme, Dale Stuckenbruck (violin); Lamar Alsop, Julien Barber, Susan Pray (viola); Richard Locker, Eugene Moye, Mark Shuman, Fred Zlotkin (cello); Richard Sarpola (bass). Engineers include: Henry Hirsch, Kevin Halpin. "Again" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance and was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. For the five albums prior to the release of GREATEST HITS, Kravitz doggedly mined the influence of late-1960s/early-'70s icons Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Sly Stone, and Curtis Mayfield, churning out groovy, guitar-heavy music that updated those classic sounds without necessarily reinventing them. But all of this, ironically, is to his credit, because it is the overwhelming familiarity of Kravitz's sound that holds such powerful appeal. GREATEST HITS collects Kravitz's best-known singles under one cover, from the blazing Hendrix-inspired opener "Are You Gonna Go My Way" to the Philly Soul ballad "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" (complete with backing strings) to his stadium-tailored cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman." The set reaches back to Kravitz's 1989 debut, LET LOVE RULE, and up to 2000's previously unreleased single "Again," showcasing, all the while, the performer's knack for pleasure-triggering songcraft, singing, and production. Though some critics may thumb their noses at Kravitz's blatantly retro music, his tunes are undeniably raucous, catchy, and fun.
