"Tequila: The Very Best of the Champs [Collectables]" (03/14/2006) Oldies Champs (The), Collectables RecordsLiner Note Author: Mark Marymont. When it comes down to it, all of the Champs' compilations are essentially interchangeable -- a few tracks may differ, but all of the big songs (namely, "Tequila" and a handful of its spin-offs) are on each disc. And they're almost always called The Best of the Champs: Tequila, Tequila: The Very Best of the Champs, Let's Have Some Tequila!, Tequila: The Champs Greatest Hits, Who's Up for Tequila?, Rockin' Tequila, Tequila Hits, Gimme That Tequila or some other clever variation on "tequila" and "hits." So, it's virtually impossible to know which collection is which, but it doesn't really matter since they all deliver the same songs (more or less) in relatively similar audio. Music Club's Tequila: The Very Best of the Champs may be the best choice, since it's concise -- the Champs had one great single, but most of their other recordings were a little run-of-the-mill -- but Collectables' Tequila: The Very Best of the Champs is just as good, and for dedicated rock & roll fans, it may even be a little better, since it contains a generous 24 tracks. It may be too much for the average fan who just wants a good, clean copy of "Tequila," but for those who want to dig deeper, it's not a bad choice, even if the packaging and resmastering leave something to desire. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Tequila" (10/13/1992) Oldies Champs (The), Ace Records (UK)Contains 22 tracks including 6 bonus tracks. The Ace label's Tequila compilation features most of the tracks that appear on the million other Champs collections available, and anybody just looking for a copy of the song "Tequila" will get more than they bargained for. That said, there are more economical overviews like the ten-track Tequila: The Champs Greatest Hits, but this ranks up there with Varese's 25 All-Time Greatest Recordings and Ace's Early Singles as far as quantity goes. ~ James Christopher Monger

"The Tequila Man" (07/28/1998) Oldies Rio, Chuck, AceContains 30 songs, including 6 previously unreleased tracks. Liner Note Author: Rob Finnis. Thirty-track assortment of sides in which Rio played a part between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s. It's a hodgepodge of a few Champs cuts (including "Tequila"), the entire Surfer's Nightmare recording by the Persuaders, issued and unissued material credited to Chuck Rio, issued and unissued cuts credited to Danny Flores, and even one ascribed to "Danny Boy." Rio was a fine saxophone player, and deserves some credit for helping spread Latin influences into rock. However, he didn't come up with the kind of material that can sustain interest over the course of a lengthy compilation such as this. Aside from "Tequila," the better tracks are "Margarita" and the Champs' "Midnighter" and "El Rancho Rock," but even these are obviously derived from the "Tequila" approach. He takes vocal on a few songs, which are likewise standard gritty '50s rock & roll, with the exception of the odd 1956 hillbilly country outing "Worried, Restless and Sad." ~ Richie Unterberger

"Tequila: The Very Best of the Champs [Music Club]" (03/18/1997) Oldies Champs (The), Music Club RecordsIncludes liner notes by Cub Koda. Liner Note Author: Cub Koda. A budget-priced but bountiful -- 18 tracks -- collection of the group's best. All of their chart hits are aboard ("El Rancho Rock," "Chariot Rock," "Tequila Twist," "Midnighter," "Too Much Tequila," "Limbo Rock," and an especially crisp transfer of the title track), a fact all the more amazing since the group is generally misrepresented as a one-hit wonder. The Champs may have only worked a small, select piece of rock instrumental turf, but it remains theirs to this day. This single-disc compilation is a one-stop buy, containing just about everything you'll need on this seminal rock & roll combo. ~ All Music Guide
