"The Magic Touch: An Anthology" (10/22/1991) Oldies Platters (The), MercuryThe Platters: Herb Reed, Paul Robi, Zola Taylor, David Lynch, Tony Williams, Sonny Turner. All songs originally released 1955-1963. Booklet includes release information and liner notes by Harry Weinger. A double-disc, 50-track extravaganza from one of the paragons of smooth soul, The Magic Touch: An Anthology is the most complete look at the Platters, barring only Bear Family's 1994 box set Four Platters and One Lovely Dish. Between 1955 and 1962, the quintet recorded 36 entries that reached the pop charts and they're all here, led by the ones that absolutely must be on any effective Platters compilation: "Only You (And You Alone)," "The Great Pretender," "(You've Got) The Magic Touch," "My Prayer," "Twilight Time," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Harbor Lights," and "Red Sails in the Sunset." That leaves plenty of room for the type of material collectors drool over, like the previously unreleased "Hula Hop" and a rare Tony Williams solo record ("When You Return"), plus obscure Platters versions of songs made famous by others ("The Glory of Love," "Goodnight Sweetheart, It's Time to Go," "My Old Flame," even an enjoyable stab at "Sixteen Tons"). It's all delivered in the sweetest sound heard yet, with a lengthy booklet and many superb photos. It's the ultimate Platters anthology, and it's everything this important group deserves. ~ John Bush

"The Platters Meet the Drifters [Digipak]" (04/13/2007) Oldies Platters (The), St. ClairThis would be a great set if it were indeed a collection of the hits of the Platters and the Drifters in their original versions, but unfortunately everything here is a re-recording, and while songs like "Under the Boardwalk," "On Broadway," "The Great Pretender," and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" are undeniably great in any incarnation, the original singles had more presence than these remakes. ~ Steve Leggett

"Greatest Hits [Remem]" (04/04/2000) Oldies Platters (The), Remember Records (Netherlands)The Platters were the most successful vocal group of the 1950s, with a dozen gold singles and a trio of million-selling albums in their r?sum?. Blessed with lead singer Tony Williams' warm, rich tenor, and a manager, Buck Ram, who was also a skilled arranger and songwriter, the Platters toned down their R&B and gospel roots to fit pop radio, and their biggest hits ("Only You," "The Great Pretender") have become acknowledged classics. Their cover of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," originally recorded by Paul Whiteman in 1933, has become the definitive version of this beautiful song. All of these tracks are here in their original versions, making this a nice single-disc introduction to this important group. ~ Steve Leggett

"All-Time Greatest Hits" (04/13/2004) Oldies Platters (The), MercuryProducers: Buck Ram, Luther Dixon. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Recorded between 1956 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Fred Bronson. While this single-disc distillation of the Platters' biggest hits is superb, it's almost identical to Rhino's 1998 comp Enchanted: The Best of the Platters, except that the Rhino disc actually has everything here plus three additional tracks. None of those three extra songs are among the group's more familiar numbers, though, so in all honesty All-Time Greatest Hits will be just as sufficient for most fans. It has all 15 of their first Top Forty hits, an astonishing run that went from 1955's "Only You (And You Alone)" through 1960's "Harbor Lights," and adds the more modern soul-pop successes they landed in 1966 and 1967 with "With This Ring" and "I Love You 1000 Times." It's some of the finest, and certainly the most successful, pop-doo wop crossover music ever made, though Mercury's two-CD, 50-track The Magic Touch: An Anthology is the preferred compilation for more serious enthusiasts. ~ Richie Unterberger

"The Complete King Recordings" (03/14/2006) Oldies Platters (The), Collectables RecordsLiner Note Author: Victor Pearlin. This collection contains most (but not all, in spite of the title) of the tracks a nascent version of the Platters did for King Records in the early to mid-'50s. To clear up some potential confusion, King was a subsidiary of Cincinnati's Federal Records, and these sides have also been released as The Complete Federal Recordings, but it's all the same material. The Platters at this point were not the ultrapolished group that would later record songs like "The Great Pretender" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" for Mercury Records, and those kinds of orchestrated (and radio-ready) arrangements are nowhere to be seen here. Truthfully, the King (or Federal, if you'd rather) sides are really more like demos, with extremely sparse backing tracks, and while the Platters display a certain level of group dynamic and charm, they're just not ready for prime time at this point, making these recordings of historical more than musical interest. The group's first big hit, "Only You," came out on Mercury Records in 1955, and three earlier versions of the song are here, none of which rises above demo quality. One take, the so-called "whistling version," features Herb Reed whistling away behind an unsteady and tentative vocal by lead singer Tony Williams, and the result is simply awful, unless the idea was to undertake a complete deconstruction of the song, which is unlikely. This disc will have some appeal to collectors and historians of the Platters, but casual listeners should definitely stick with the later Mercury recordings. ~ Steve Leggett

"Sound & Sensation" (06/22/1999) Oldies Platters (The), Madacy DistributionThis is part of Madacy's Sound Sensation series. Originally from Los Angeles, the Platters personified class. Zola Taylor gave the group a different look and probably inspired the makeup of the Miracles, Ruby & the Romantics, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and others. The Platters always dressed elegantly, with the guys in tuxedos or formal-looking attire and Taylor in long formal dinner dresses and gowns, looking like a queen stepping and hitting notes with the guys. That said, this brief compilation misses the mark; there are only ten songs, and a mere one "With This Ring" from the '60s Sonny Turner-led Platters. The other nine are the career-building hits carved with Tony Williams, including "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "My Prayer," "Only You," and "The Great Pretender." Even appetizer lovers will be dissatisfied with this skimpy set, especially when more comprehensive compilations are available. ~ Andrew Hamilton

"The Very Best of the Platters [Collectables]" (03/14/2006) Oldies Platters (The), Collectables RecordsAdapter: Ferdinand Schubert. The Very Best of the Platters from Collectables duplicates the same title and sequence as the Polygram Special Markets release from 1997, collecting ten tracks from the group's 1950s stay at Mercury Records. Although there are some wonderful cuts here, including "My Prayer," "It's Raining Outside," and the elegant "Twilight Time," this brief compilation is probably more defined by what it doesn't include, like "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Great Pretender," or "Only You," all of which were among the Platters' biggest hits. As a quick, cursory sampler of the group, The Very Best of the Platters works fine, but any but the most casual listener will want a broader look at this important group. ~ Steve Leggett The Very Best includes an even ten of the Platters' best-loved hits, like "Magic Touch (You've Got)," "You're Making a Mistake," "Twilight Time," "My Serenade" and "The Mystery of You." ~ Keith Farley The Very Best of the Platters from Collectables duplicates the same title and sequence as the Polygram Special Markets release from 1997, collecting ten tracks from the group's 1950s stay at Mercury Records. "20th Century Masters - The Christmas Collection" (09/21/2004) Oldies Platters (The), MercuryFormerly available as A CHRISTMAS ALBUM. This holiday collection, which clocks in at just less than 30 minutes in length, was originally released in this same sequence in 1963 as Christmas With the Platters, and has been reissued several times since in slightly different configurations and under varying titles. If you bear in mind that the Platters only did one Christmas session, then it probably doesn't matter which of these you pick up, although the sound on this 2004 edition is superb. The upbeat numbers fare best, with an energized version of "Jingle Bells Jingle," an organ-led "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town," and a spunky rendition of "Jingle Bell Rock" being the obvious highlights. The group's manager, Buck Ram (who also produced the original album), has a couple of his own songs included here, "Come Home for Christmas" and "Christmas Time," and both are competent but hardly memorable compositions. The arrangements on the album are interesting and frequently inventive, and the Platters, as always, sing wonderfully. One wishes, though, that it was just a little bit longer. ~ Steve Leggett

"Christmas with the Platters [St. Clair]" (04/13/2007) Oldies Platters (The), St. ClairOld-school doo wop and R&B enthusiasts should note this baker's dozen of seasonal offerings from the incipient incarnation of the Platters. The quintet serves up distinct and soulful interpretations of well-known selections, such as the buoyant opening "Jingle Bell Jingle" and a heartfelt stirring rendition of "White Christmas," boasting a signature Buck Ram string arrangement. More in the spirit of the genre is the appropriately ebullient "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." The yuletide novelty "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" is likewise a standout, featuring a lighthearted lead from Zola Taylor. Standing in contrast is the affectively sublime "Silent Night," which is one of the effort's finest moments, as well as "Auld Lang Syne" and a heartfelt "I'll Be Home for Christmas." Ram's combination of intimate orchestration and warm inviting vocals has never sounded better. His influence similarly stretches into a pair of original compositions. "Christmas Time" is a waltz ballad that feels right at home in the Platters' canon beside the likes of "Twilight Time" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." Ram's "Come Home for Christmas" is languid and laid-back, with a smoky debonair lead from tenor Tony Williams. Of the uptempo numbers, "Jingle Bell Rock" captures the essence and innocence of the era. [In 2004, Christmas With the Platters was reissued as 20th Century Masters - The Christmas Collection, sporting a budget price tag to boot.] ~ Lindsay Planer
