"Oh Aaron: Live in Concert [Video/DVD]" (03/26/2002) Oldies Carter, Aaron, Jive Records (USA)Contains an untitled hidden track which occurs after "Cowgirl (Lil' Mama)." Personnel includes: Aaron Carter, Nick Carter, No Secrets (vocals); Brian Kierfulf (guitar, programming); Josh Schwartz, Paul Gendler, Michael Thompson (guitar); Mike Rose, Nick Foster (keyboards, programming); Tony T, Andy Goldmark, Marc Nelson (background vocals). Producers include: Brian Kierulf, Josh Schwartz, Scorpio, Rose & Foster, Andy Goldmark. Engineers include: Brian Kierulf, Josh Schwartz, Bill Malina. Even if adolescent pop star Aaron Carter is destined to become the Jimmy Osmond of the 21st Century, he's determined to go out fighting. Following up the huge success of its predecessor, OH AARON follows a similar formula, employing elements of R&B, hip-hop and pure pop production. Though the title song concerns Carter's difficulty in scoring a boatload of tickets to a Backstreet Boys concert for his friends, the young pop idol largely eschews the romantic ballad style of said teenpoppers--that may come after he gets a bit more puberty under his belt. Instead, this is largely a party album, powered by funky synth bass, drum loops, and sock-it-to-'em hooks. On "Not Too Young, Not Too Old," Carter sings about playing both sides of the age game to his advantage. "Stride" finds Aaron rapping over the chorus of Matthew Wilder's '80s hit "Break My Stride." Though he engages in an amiable rap style for most of the album, Carter does manage to croon one sentimental ballad, "I'm All About You," which will surely have his predominantly female following weeping into their junior high yearbooks.

"Anthology" (03/30/1999) Oldies Orbison, Roy, White StarTHE ANTHOLOGY features footage of Roy Orbison performing during different periods of his career which spanned four decades as well as interviews with Barry Gibb, Robert Plant, Bono, Dwight Yokum and k.d. lang. A rather oddball but nonetheless wonderful compilation of some, but nowhere near all, of Roy Orbison's best work. THE ANTHOLOGY is one of the better sounding and best executed of the many Orbison anthologies available. Opening with his lovely posthumous hit "You Got It," THE ANTHOLOGY takes a non-chronological tour through Orbison's career with stops at almost all of his biggest hits, from the rockabilly "Ooby Dooby," to the bolero "Running Scared," to the swaggering "Oh Pretty Woman." A handful of lesser-known but equally worthy tracks gives this more depth than some anthologies out there, and the remastered sound is uniformly excellent. THE ANTHOLOGY is as good as '60s pop gets.

"Panic in the Streets" (10/06/1998) Oldies Widespread Panic, Volcano 3PANIC IN THE STREETS includes a bonus CD which contains a live concert from The Georgia Theatre. Widespread Panic: John Bell, Michael Houser, Todd Nance, Domingo Ortiz, Dave Schools, T. Lavitz, Samantha Woods. Panic in the Streets was an official live album by Widespread Panic documenting the launch concert for Light Fuse, Get Away. Held in Athens, GA, in 1998, it shows the band at the first real peak of its live improvisational powers. Panic in the Streets concentrates on the band's increasingly precise songcraft as a way into improvisation. John Bell was really coming into his own as a frontman here, and the complete exploration of harmonic and rhythmic structures in the heart of the rockist "Tall Boy," Vic Chesnutt's greasy funk ditty "Aunt Avis," and the dynamically diverse "Pilgrim" makes one wonder why anyone ever got excited about the Grateful Dead -- and no, that's not hyperbole. ~ Thom Jurek

"Who's Next [Video]" (11/07/2000) Oldies Who (The), Rhino Records (USA)This video is part of the Classic Albums documentary series, zeroing in on the making and realization of the Who's 1971 recording Who's Next. It does the usual thorough and enjoyable job that one expects from the producers of this series, employing interviews, about a quarter-century after the release of the record, with many of the principals. Those include all of the members of the Who from that time, except the late Keith Moon; producer Glyn Johns; and co-manager Chris Stamp. The confusing genesis of the project as the concept album Lifehouse is worked through, as well of explanations of how and why the concept was abandoned (mostly because no one could understand what Pete Townshend was getting at), with many of the songs salvaged for a straightforward hard rock album. The vintage performance clips of the Who during some of the album's material are a bit disappointing, though. Many of these are taken from a show done about six years after the album was made, and there are surely better ones available (and ones that show Moon in better shape in particular). ~ Richie Unterberger
